The growing memorial behind me is proof of that. Many here in southwest virginia were tuned in for what was supposed to be a live feel good story. It turned into anything but. A memorial of flowers and balloons grew overnight outside wdbj tv in roanoke, virginia. The station still cant believe two beloved colleagues are gone. All day the community has provided an outpouring just of support for us. Reporter reporter Alison Parker and photographer adam ward were ambushed and killed live on the air wednesday morning. [ sound of gunfire ] by a disgruntled former employee of their station. Im going to have reporter that employee was a fellow journalist. Vester flanagan. He went by the name Bryce Williams while reporting for the station. The 41yearold was let go two years ago and andy parker says his daughter died doing what she loved. Its hard to get your arms arnold it and around it ask realize or try and make sense of why it happened. Reporter before killing himself Authorities Say flanagan went on a twitter rant saying allison made racist comments and adam complained about him to hr. Flanagan apparently described himself as a human powder keg. Motivated by the Charleston Church shooting massacre. President obama called wednesdays shooting a moment to reflect on. I think its one more argument for why we need to look at you know how we can reduce gun violence in this country. Reporter prayer vigils will planned for the community and the coming days. At last check the woman who was also shot during the shooting it was in the hospital in stable condition. She did undergo surgery after being shot in the back. Meantime, flanagans family did release a Statement Last night saying their thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. Reporter they were a news team who took on the rough assignments with the same passion as the fun assignments. Alison parker in front of the camera and adam ward behind it. She had just worked on a very serious project we had which is an hour long special unclews that aired just last on child abuse that aired just last week and gave her all to the job. Adam was the same way and they worked together as a team for a long time. Reporter parker was 24 years old. A reporter her colleagues call a rock star. She grew up outside of roanoke and treasured her family, sharing their stories on this facebook video. I come from a family that absolutely loves the arts. Mill mom works the my mom works the piedmont arts in martinsville. Reporter her father andy told the Washington Post reporter chris hurst is an anchor there. He and parker just moved in together after dating for the past nine months. I had a habit of always wanting her to text me when she got to work safely. The last thing she said to me was good night sweet boy. The next thing i knew i wake up to phone calls from the station a little after 7 00 saying there had been a shooting that happened on Live Television. Firefighters scrambled to put out a fire in union county. You can see the large flames and thick plumes of smoke shooting through the plain field home. The fire started in the attic overnight and crews worked tirelessly to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes. Police say everyone was able to get out safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation. And developing in brooklyn, Police Released Surveillance Video of a suspect in an attempted rape. It happened at 74th street and 20th avenue in bensonhurst rier this month. Police say the man grabbed the woman from behind and tried to kiss her neck. She resisted and the suspect ran off. Well, divers will resume their search for a missing officialerman in new jersey today. Tom andersons sunken 40foot trawler was found yesterday in the Sandy Hook Channel and state police used sonar to locate it. He is believed to have been on board alone. The Recovery Mission was suspended yesterday afternoon because of dangerous water currents. Mayor de blasio wants to clean up bad behavior in times square. New task force will crack down on aggressive costumed characters, bare chested painted ladies and panhandlers. De blasio says the behavior sometimes borders on harassment and officers will also be on the lookout to make sure the characters dont spread to coney island and battery park. A brooklyn mother is breathing relief this morning after a hornets nest was finally removed. Cbs2 stepped in to help Mary Jane Kohler of diker heights. She was worried theyd hurt her children and an upcoming block party. She asked the city for help but her requests were ignored. We reached out to a private beekeeper who agreed to remove the nest for free. I wanted to help. I could feel it in my body. A big relief. I can feel it. I could just feel everything going down. A spokesperson for councilman says they asked the nypd to send a beekeeper to help but he would not have been available until today at the earliest. 4 38. Asian markets closed higher street wednesday. Stocks had their best day since 2011 with the dow climbing 619 points. The nasdaq was up 191 points and s p added 72. Copy paper, markers, crayons, pencils, just office supplies. Reporter and parents see how much these teachers are paying out of pocket. They spend extra money out of their own pocket, im sure they have families. Reporter ramirez and fellow teachers at ps 111 in Hells Kitchen can ask for help, sometimes its just not enough. On average, 75 of our parents can actually donate what we ask for. The rest we have to kind of do ourselves. Reporter so this school year, ramirez is turning to the internet for help. She started a go fund me page to fill in the gaps and to get her students additional tables, cushions, a classroom library, and these basic supplies. Literally the next morning, i woke up and i still had like 100. The next day i had like 150, its just been people spread the word you know. Reporter she says family and friends and even strangers have donated. Theres actually been people i dont know on the list but wanted to make some kind of contribution. Good morning, it is just after 5 00 on thursday, august 27th. 2015. We come to you this morning with very heavy hearts two of our own were shot and killed during a live shot yesterday morning. Alison parker and adam ward were part of the family here at the station and many of you are v told us they were part of your morning day as well. We cannot express how much your support means to us. And to help us out with the coverage today, weve had a lot reporter thats how the show began. Is an cores giving a transcribe ewe anchors giving a tribute to their colleagues. They worked together every morning on that show. She was in front of the camera, she was behind it. Their colleagues say the team had so much energy and excitement for every assignment. Residents scramble toed escape a fire that to escape a fire that fred to spread to three homes in spread to three homes in union county. Cbs2s Janelle Burrell joins us live. Reporter the fire now out after tearing through those three homes here an east 2nd street and plainfield and you can see firefighters here now wrapping up this scene here behind me. After arriving at the scene just after 2 00 this morning. They say when they got here, number 640 here on east 2nd was completely engulfed in flames. Those flames quickly spreading to the two homes on both sides of the structure. You can see from some video earlier this morning just how bad the flames were. It took about 80 firefighters from here in plainfield and surrounding towns to get those flames under control. The fire chief does tell us though that all of the people inside of the building as far as they know did get out safely. They say part of the building number 640 they plan on doing a more thorough search later in the day. They say no injuries for firefighters or residents and thats the good news but again one house completely destroyed. Two others significantly smoke damage after the fire here overnight. The roads double track project gets underway on the busy ronkonkoma branch. It will bring Service Improvements to the line including half Hourly Service during off peak periods and on the weekends. The second track will stretch from ronkonkoma to farmingdale for 18 miles. Chris and mary, back to you. A hot shower should be relaxing. A long island mother says the family has been getting shocked in the shower for months. Cbs2s Jennifer Mclogan reports from Port Jefferson station. I dont want to get electro cuted and i dont want to come home to god forbid one of my kids being electrocuted. Reporter elizabeth says the summer has been a jolt for her and her daughters home from college. Without the gloves on, and we touch this . We get an electrical shock. That would just like back us up like oh my god. Come right through the whole system . Yeah. My daughter got an electrical shock that lasted three hours. Reporter they called in an electrician who told them their condo was not properly grounded to their utilitys wiring. He said and your cables electrified. Reporter they made a house call. I did get the runaround. They insisted it was inside the house. Had nothing to do with them. Reporter meantime the family donned rubber soled sandals and thick rubber gloves before showering. Worried about the dangers of ungrounded wiring causing shock or even fire. Neighbors volunteered their bathrooms. Yes, she offered me . Got to be Good Neighbors you know. Reporter the company says they returned multiple times before and after our calls. No family should ever have to go through this. Reporter pscg responded. The issue is now resolved. The family hopes the fix is finally permanent. Not temporary. From Port Jefferson, Jennifer Mclogan, cbs2 news. And they added if something in your home is creating dangerous currents be sure to contact the utility and a licensed electrician immediately. Well, police in Bergen County, new jersey have been increased patrols in following the theft of more street signs there in ridgewood. Nearly 40 signs around ridgewood have disappeared and Police Suspect the culprits are kids heading off to college. Road signs from back home could be used to adorn the walls of their dorm room but the missing signs create problems for drivers and they are very expensive to replace. One of these signs cost 65 apiece just to produce. That doesnt include the staffing hours to put the sign up right a pole and fix it. Police are offering amnesty to anyone woeworn returns the stole who returns the signs before september 15th. The national zoo in washington says the smaller of two new panda cubs has died. The zoos adult female panda mei xiang gave birth saturday. Zoo officials took extra care bottle fielding and tube feeding the tiny cubs trying to make sure they got equal feeding time with mama bear but newborn cubs are extremely vulnerable in the first week. The remaining cub appears strong and behaving normally. All right, on the next half hour, the nasty fight aboard a jet blue blight that ended up with people in handcuffs. But first the top stories, a fire started in one home and then spread to two others in plainfield, new jersey we are live on the scene. It is my very, very sad duty to report that we have determined through the help of the police and our own employees that alison and adam died this morning shortly after 6 45 when the shots rang out. This was the story that thought they would never have to report. A reporter and videographer from roanoke, virginia shot in killed in the middle of a live interview. The victims both in their 20s at the beginning of their careers. The gunman a former colleague who had been fired two years earlier. Good morning, im chris wragge. And im mary calvi. A live report from roanoke in a moment but alison just two years into her career, a young reporter. And they called her a rock star. We have been devastated by this story. Just such a shock. And such a sudden loss. Yeah the thing that strikes me is in the news business, whether its the papers, television, we document a lot of failure about 80 of what we do is peoples failures whether its human or societal. The Morning Television it gives you a chance to do the lighter side some of the stories that make you laugh and smile. Thats what the kids were doing. They were at at an Amusement Park outside a mall. Something like this. Chamber of commercetype stuff. When theyre just out doing a light story you would never expect anything like this to happen under any circumstances especially this. The general manager Jeffrey Marks is a dear friend of mine. Ive known him for many years, he said it best when he said we were grieving while doing our jobs and we were trying to breathe while doing what journalists do. Now to the virginia tv crew gunned down early yesterday morning by a former coworker during a live broadcast. The morning show returned to the air a short time ago as the station staff tries to cope with this stunning loss. Reporter Alison Parker and cameraman adam ward were ambushed in a shocking moment for thousands of viewers. More from cbs2s lou young who is in roanoke virginia. Reporter candles burn among the memorial tributes at the tv station a killer apparently wanted to punish. Former tv reporter Vester Lee Flanagan fumed and brooded heavierize professional over his professional misfortunes and took them out on two young journalists doing a live report for the station that fired him two years ago. The shots continue. 24yearold Alison Parker and 27yearold adam ward died at the sustain. The woman they were interviewing was injured. Wards camera caught a brief glimpse of the killer and the people back at wdbj realized it was the troubled reporter who went by the tv name Bryce Williams. Becky wright remembers her husband working on election night. Reporter the roanoke station was the killers last stop on a career of lost opportunities. He also worked in odessa, texas, savannah and tallahassee. It never worked out. It appears flanagan continued to use the Bryce Williams name online before and after the on air killings he complained about his career and the victims and even posted a video of the shootings on facebook. He faxed a rambling manifesto to a Network Newsroom saying the circumstances of these murders are i certainly troubling for the especially troubling for the people who live in the community. Many of them feel as if they knew Alison Parker. They saw her on tv every day and were forced to witness her murder. It hits home. I tell you something i dont want to see again. Reporter after the morning attack flanagan drove to the roanoke airport switched cars and was finally spotted driving on interstate 66. He shot himself as Police Closed in. Late in the day, the dead mans family issued a statement is as we mentioned the staff at the stations News Department is back on the job this morning. Half hour ago, they began broadcasting their morning show as scheduled. Cbs2s don champion joins us live now from roanoke. Don . Reporter yeah, good morning mary and chris. The day later viewers and Staff Members here at wdbj are still trying to make sense of what happened even if thats if that is even possible. As you mentioned just over a half hour ago, the morning show did return to the air heres how it started. Good morning, it is just after 5 00 on thursday, august 27th. 2015. We come to you this morning with very heavy hearts two of our own were shot and killed during a live shot yesterday morning. Alison parker and adam ward were part of the family here at the station and many of you have told us that they were part of your mornings each day as well. Reporter now Staff Members from sister stations are actually helping put on the newscast this morning. The anchors from a station in missouri. Now we are told the staff here at wdbj is very close and as you can imagine, theyre just trying to get through this very difficult time. The gm here at the station staff is doing. They are taking time to grieve. Theyre telling wonderful stories about alison and adam. And they are taking time to breathe. And theyre getting about the work that they have as their mission. Which is to uncover the truth and tell it to our audience. Were people are working extra shifts. We have great support from our sister stations in the midwest. And wichita and springfield, missouri, which have actually sent people to help us. So we can have our staff bolstered. We the outpouring of support from the community has been absolutely amazing. Reporter now, what makes this tragedy even heavier is the fact that the two victims are actually from the region. They have a lot of friends and family here, they went to school here and they went to college here, there are a lot of people in this very Small Community grieving this morning. We should mention that the third shooting victim the woman who was being interviewed at the time of the shooting is still in the hospital in stable condition. A fast moving fire rips through several homes in union county. Cbs2s Janelle Burrell joins us live from plainfield. Janelle . Reporter well, mary, that fire began in one home quickly spread to the two homes next to it. And it took firefighters a few hours to get it under control. Eventually getting the flames out at about 4 00 this morning. Lets show you some video of what this scene looked like earlier as firefighters battled those flames. They say they got the call just after 2 00 arriving to find number 640 east 2nd street engulfed. It took about 80 firefighters from here in plainfield and other tons to get towns to get the flames under control. The chief tells us it appears that everyone made it out safely but he says part of the building number 640 did collapse. So their plan is to come back later today and do a more thorough search but so far, they say no reports for any firefighters or residents who lived in the buildings here reporting live this morning from plainfield, new jersey, Janelle Burrell, cbs2 news. All right thank you. Divers will resume their search for a missing fisherman in new jersey today. Tom andersons sunken trawler was found yesterday in the Sandy Hook Channel. Louisiana Authorities Say a small town Police Officer was apparently killed with his own handgun after he responded to a Domestic Violence incident. It happened in the town of sunset about 60 miles west of baton rouge. And southwest louisiana. The shooting happened at a home where three women were stabbed one fatally. One of the survivors was critically wounded. Police say the suspect is the officers cousin. Civil rights activist Boyton Robinson is being remembered for her fight for racial justice. She died yesterday in montgomery, alabama at the age of 104. In 1965, robinson and others were beaten during a march for Voting Rights in selma. Earlier this year, she spoke with cbs2s about that dark day known as bloody sunday. The Police Department came up and started beating us. And i stood up there and finally i fell. President obama held robinsons hand as they crossed the bridge commemorating the 50th anniversary of the selma march. Well, the cost of School Supplies can add up. Not just for parents but for teachers too. Kindergarten teacher Joanne Ramirez says she typically spends about 1,000 of her own money each school year to ensure her students in Hells Kitchen have the supplies and the tools they need. Well, teachers ask for help from parents and the school, ramirez said sometimes its just not enough. So this school year, she started a go fund me page to fill in the gaps. Literally the next morning i woke up and i still had like 100, the next day i had like 150. So its just been people you know spread the word. Ramirez says in the three weeks since she started her Fundraising Efforts shes collected more than 1,000. Shes heaping to raise hoping to raise 1,500 before School Starts on september th. Markets snapped their losing streak closing in positive territory for the first time in more than a week. The dow soared 619 points its biggest one day gain in seven years. The nasdaq jumped 191 points and it is looking like a higher open today. Its looking less likely the fed will raise Interest Rates next month giving the roll stillty and troubles in china. Stimsome say the big swings that were seeing in the market could become the new normal for at least the next few weeks. Well, ten of worlds biggest at makers including gm and ford and honda and bmw are facing a Class Action Lawsuit over the dangers of keyless inin addition. The suit claims the companies have known for years about the dangers of Carbon Monoxide poisoning when keyless soaks continue to run when the vehicles continue to run when the drivers left the car. At least 13 Carbon Monoxide defects are linked to the defects. And disney is tapping into the power of youtube to launch producted ties to the products tied to the upcoming star wars film. On the health watch this morning, Health Experts say its time to pay closer attention to the nutritional value of foods rather than counting calories. It did the editorial in the journal of open heart points out that nuts or olive oil are associated with the reduced risk of heart attack and stroke. Reporter well, mary, firefighters got the flames out just after 4 00 this morning. But you can still see theres still very much an active police and fire presence as they try to keep people away from the smoldering debris. We want to show you what it looked like here a short time ago when firefighters were battling the blaze. They say they got here just after 2 00 this morning to find number 640 east 2nd street completely engulfed. And the flames spread to two homes on either side of that building. It took 80 firefighters from here in plainfield and other towns to get the flames usual control. But they do tell under control. So for parts of puerto rico and then the dominican republic, its today through friday where we see some problems and then, we see on saturday, still not a hurricane. A little further north on the hudson river crossings to the Tappan Zee Bridge though. You have some company as you go westchester bound. You are still moving well. Rockland county, also a clear ride to the belt parkway, its okay if you make your way near the street as you continue on the belt parkway up on the bqe is where you tap your brakes. Only metered cabs collect a 50 cent surcharge that goes to the agency. A study says the certain uber surge in uber ridership is costing the mta about 1 million a year. They recommended that the state direct taxes collected from uber and other for hire cars specifically to the mta to cover the agency cease shortfall. More new yorkers are moving to philadelphia than from philly to new york. Thats according to a census data from 2009 to 2013. Every year, for that five year period, nearly 27,000 people moved from the new York Metro Area to the philadelphia region but only about 19,000 people per year moved from philly to new york city during that very same period. Reporter wdbjs morning news in roanoke, virginia began with a somber tribute to Alison Parker and adam ward. One of the anchors couldnt hold back the tears reading a statement from parkers family reporter this team worked together every morning for this show. Parker in front of the camera, ward behind it. Their colleagues say they brought passion to the job daily on both the rough and fun assignments. Hey everyone, im Alison Parker. Reporter parker was 24 years old and she grew up outside roanoke and treasured her family. She had just moved in with chris hurst, her boyfriend of nine months and hes an anchor at wdbj. She loved what she did. And she was going to go so far in this field. And was well on her way. Reporter he never imagined she would be in danger during yesterdays assignment. Interviewing the director of the local chamber of commerce. It was a harmless story. On the anniversary of this Beautiful Lake behind me that we had shared some wonderful memories on ourselves. Reporter the photographer adam ward was 27 and engaged to melissa ott the morning news producer at the station. She watched the horrifying scene unfold on live tv. It happened while she was in the control room. Yesterday was otts last day working at the cbs affiliate before a new job in charlotte. In other news we have breaking news in new jersey. 80 firefighters rushed to rescue residents from seven build ever busching homes indowndown could be several burning homes in union county. Cbs2s Janelle Burrell joins us live. Reporter the fire chief says it appears the residents made it out safely before the fire tore through three homes here on east 2nd street. Some video of what the scene looked like as firefighters who are battling those flames they got the call just after 2 00 this morning. They say the fire started in number 640 and quickly spread to the two homes next door. It took crews about two hours to get the fire out. Again they believe that all of the residents are accounted for. They say as far as they know, no injuries were reported. Now facing charges of volunteer firefighter 18year old justin trend of South Plainfield is charged with 14 counts of causing public alarm. Most of the calls were placed last month.
