Take a look up there. You see that fifth floor balcony. That is one of the units that was damaged by the fire. The fire spreading to the balcony and sixth floor. Three apartments were damaged because of this. Amazingly, it didnt spread beyond that. This is a pretty big building here. The investigators are still trying to figure out what started this. It did happen a little before midnight. One person did have to be rescued and taken to the hospital. Earlier, the residents talked about waking up to the firefighters and neighbors, banging on doors including one woman who said a cat, her cat started pawing at her face to wake her up. The firemen and neighbors knocked on my door and said theres fire. I waked up my sons and went out to see what happened. I saw the smoke around the lobby. I opened the doors and saw the smoke. I grabbed the cat and went to the far stairwell where the fire is. Black smoke came out. I went the other way and beat on her door because i know she has him in the wheelchair, to get her out. She was saying it was terrifying, the ordeal. Fortunate solhe is okay. You see fortunately, she is okay. You see the unit with the balcony, damaged there. Three units damaged because of the fire. The fire chief says they do not know what started this. The investigators are looking into the cause. And one of the other residents now finally back to sleep, getting rest after a chaotic night here in cherry hill. 6 03. 43 degrees. Today in Gloucester County, students in the mop row Township School district monroe Township School district are back to class after classes were canceled for a week because of mold concerns. The district spent the past week testing every School Building for mold after the fungus was found in holly glen elementary. Students there are being moved to other schools while crews clean up the mold. A philadelphia School District grappling with mold concerns. John b. Kelly elementary will not reopen until tomorrow. The school in germantown has been closed since thursday when traces of mold were found in an ventilation system. President trumps pledge to work with congress is being overshadowed by a swipe that he made at his peres predecessors that reports show to be false. At the white house yesterday, the president joined Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell for a show of political unity. Later a reporter asked mr. Same for patc and new Jersey Transit. Were following breaking news in cherry himpt oll. One person is hurt, several apartments damaged following an overnight fire. Its under investigation. One family says their cat alerted them to the flames and allowed them to get out safely. A wilmington mother is now charged with killing two young boys who were found dead in a bathtub. Her identity and possible motive are still a mystery. Investigators say that the woman called police from a home on west 9th in wilmington to report the deaths yesterday morning. Pamela osborne is live outside wilmington where today we hope to learn more about the mother and young victims. Tell us what we know so far. Reporter right. Theres still a lot of Unanswered Questions at this point. What we can tell you is that those boys were brothers. And the woman charged in their deaths was the mother of only one of those boys. Police believe the children, a 5yearold and infant, were drowned. It will be up to a medical examiner to determine the official cause of death once the autopsies are complete. After giving the getting the 911 call, detectives rushed to the scene on west 9th yesterday morning. They discovered both boys in a bathtub. Investigators spent hours at the home collecting evidence. Meantime, neighbors and Community Members shocked by what had happened gathered there. Schoolchildren with the group called stop the violence Freight Train came out to hold hands. They offered their prayers and support. Others lit candles and left stuffed animals. We talked to a reverend in the wilmington community. She says the tragedy has opened her eyes. There was a situation here where somebody missed this young lady along the way. She was crying out for help, but somebody missed her. I feel a deep sense of helplessness. I wish there was something we could have done. I wish is someone had said something or seen something. And now im going to be much, much more aware. Reporter that mother will be arraigned later this morning. We will be there and let you know what if any new information comes out of the court appearance. Team owners and the Players Union will try to tackle the issue at a meeting in new york. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was the first to take a knee to protest social injustice last year. Hes filed a grievance against the nfl claiming they tried to keep him out of the league. And Malcolm Jenkins will be at the meeting. He told nbc sports philadelphia that hell be in on discussions to try to solve the anthem issue. Jenkins was the first eagles player to follow kaepernicks lead on anthem demonstrations. Now to an update to a story that we first you first saw on nbc10. Albright college offered to reinstate three Football Players after they were cut from the team for regame demonstrations. One player took a knee during the National Anthem at a recent game. Two others refused to follow a Team Agreement to kneel during the coin toss and show unity. Albright says it shines a light on much larger issues of social and Racial Injustice and that they must be addressed. The trial of new jersey senator bob menendez will continue after a judge refused to toss out charges against him. The defense argued that of the evidence did not that the evidence did not meet the new definition of bribery which the Supreme Court established last year. A judge said a dismissal in this case could punch holes in just about any other bribery case. Prosecutors say menendez accepted bribes from a florida doctor in exchange for pressuring government officials to help the doctors business. Convicted child sex abuser Jerry Sandusky will find out tomorrow if he will get another chance to try and prove his innocence. A pennsylvania judge says hell announce the decision about whether sandusky deserves a new trial. Sandusky claims he didnt receive adequate legal representation during his original trial. The expenn state coach was found guilty and is serving a 30 to 60year sentence in federal prison. The fight over the sugary drink tax goes to the State Capitol today where Business Owners and workers will make their case at a hearing on why the tax should be outlawed. The Business People and employees are expected to testify how the penny and a half perounce tax on soft drinks has cut into their sales and caused pay cuts and layoffs. State lawmakers attempted to hold a hearing in philadelphia over the summer but cut it short because of prosoda tax protesters. The tax helps pay for the prek education and other city services. Yesterday philadelphias controller released results of a survey on the taxs impact. It found more than 60 of businesses reported a loss of revenue. In many cases, sales dropped at least 10 . The majority of the losses were reported in the citys poorest neighborhoods. The Mayors Office is disputing the analysis and the controller saying cocacola actually reported this year that sales of their 7. 5ounce mini cans and 1. 25liter bottles were up nearly 10 in philadelphia. Today the Justice Department will announce progress in the effort to keep opiates out of the u. S. President trump says hell declare a National Emergency on the Opioid Epidemic next week. I work for the park authority. Reporter he that was guy. The one who would zap with a parking ticket. Then he got sick. I had a heart problem. I notified my supervisor that i would be out for a little bit. Rivera didnt keep in contact with them while he was out. The ppa fired him, sending him a termination letter. I didnt think anything about. It i said, okay, i decided to look for another job. Reporter fast forward two years. I got sick again. Reporter he went to the hospital and said he gave his current insurance card. A couple weeks ago, i got a bill for over 1,000 saying that im still under the aetna plan. Reporter the problem is, he has Keystone Insurance from his current job. He was covered two years ago by aetna when he worked for the ppa and was a union member. Keystone has more comprehensive conk and would have covered the coverage and would have covered the 1,258 charge. In 2015, my husband accessed care. Once again, aetna paid on it, and were going to be billed. Mart martin. Reporter martins wife showed us the website and the bills that are adding up. The bills should have been paid by our current insurance. Reporter they called aetna, but the Insurance Company told them the employer had to cancel the insurance. Then the Parking Authority said you need to prove it to us that you dont work there anymore. Reporter rivera didnt keep the termination letter ppa sent them. I didnt think to keep it, like i would need it two years later. Reporter he tried his union district, council 33. They told him they needed information he was no longer employed by the Parking Authority. Im not getting the check, not paying towards benefits. I havent paid union dues. Im hoping you can finds out resolve this. Reporter we reached out to the ppa. A representative says it did inform the union two years ago of riveras termination. The union tells us thats true. The issue all comes down to a glitch in a system. In fact, since we brought this to its attention, Council District 33 says its conducting an audit to see if there are other cases. As for the riveras, they were taken off the unions insurance and are happy the situation has been fixed. Harry hairston, nbc10 responds. Heres the takeaway if you switch insurance companies, make sure your medical provider is putting in claims to the right company.
