Ive heard that you guys have known each other for now 20 years. Is that true . Yes. Yes. Yes. My kids well, theyre now 36 and 33, 32, 29, but when they were little, they said, dad, weve never asked for you to call anybody up thats famous to bring, but we have one request, and they wanted to meet adam sandler, and i said, who is adam sandler . [ laughter ] of course. Jimmy oh my goodness. Aw dad. And they saw that movie you were in. Billy madison. Yes, yes. Billy madison. Jimmy this was back in Billy Madison days. He didnt watch it, but thats okay, but the kids, they called me i got a call out of nowhere, and you know i was very young and excited, and someone said, dustin called, and he wanted to meet you, and i said, oh my you know. Im very nervous because i grew up loving dustin and marathon man, and just every movie dustins in was such a kramer vs. Kramer was such a a huge part of all our lives, and anyway, so i was supposed to be at dustins house at dinner. For dinner. Jimmy you got invited for dinner. Yeah im sorry. He invited me over to meet his kids. So i was supposed to go to dustins house at 5 00. I was living in a little hotel, and i left my hotel at 12 00, so i could get there, and make sure i wasnt late, and i [ laughter ] jimmy five hours early. Five hours, i was like what the hell, and i was in my little red yugo, and i drove there, and i didnt know los angeles that well, but anyway, i got to the house that early, and then i sat in my car. And were waiting for you, ten minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes. An hour. I was late because i was terrified to go meet Dustin Hoffman. So i just sat in my car [ laughter ] jimmy sitting in your yugo . Yeah, but i was very scared because he is dustin, but then when i came in there, he was the warmest man like he is, and the best with his kids, and we had dinner, and ill never forget, we you guys you and the kids were playing an acting exercise. Improv. You were doing improv at the table, and dusty was making each one of his great kids give a place, right . Yeah. And everyone was everyone in the family was awesome, was very talented and saying funny jokes, very smooth lines, and blah, blah, blah. And all i remember was praying, please dont get to me. [ laughter ] i dont want to fail in front of the whole family. [ laughter ] jimmy thats a lot of pressure. Yeah. Jimmy lot of pressure to meet somebody. You got to me, and, i dont know, i think i choked on some food. I got out of it. [ light laughter ] i dont remember. Jimmy did you did you i heard stories that you used to play basketball together or something. Is that do you remember that at all . No. You played with my son. I play with jake. With jake. But when you first that day, you loved me so much when we had dinner, you thought i was such a nice guy, that you invited me to play basketball, and it was you and tom cruise against me, and your son, jake, and you guys kept thinking i was like Wilt Chamberlain because i was so tall. [ laughter ] yeah, yeah, yeah. You dont remember that . No, i dont, but i know that im the tallest one in my family, and always have been. Jimmy but then you went to the Golden Globes. cause i heard yes. He doesnt know that either. I dont think you remember that either, but i was at your house. Dustin [ laughter ] dustin was getting a Lifetime Achievement award, and i happened to be at the house, and then for no reason he looked at me and goes, do you want to come . And i was like, do i want to come i didnt even know what the Golden Globes was. [ laughter ] i was like, yeah, yeah, ill come, and you got to wear something nice or something. I said, yeah, sure, and you got the biggest award of the night, and i was at your table, and everyone who was up on stage was like, redford. And i remember christopher walken, they were all looking at me like why is this [ bleep ] here . [ laughter ] anyway. Jimmy but now youre in a a film together, and youre great in the film, and i want to talk about all that stuff. But i mean, i just think its cool, and i think you have a a great chemistry, and i could just i mean, meeting you right now, ive never met you before, but im intimidated. Yeah. You are . Jimmy yeah. We have very similar noses. [ laughter ] jimmy i love that. Oh yeah. Not bad. We do. Yeah. No please, thats a compliment. God. I love it. I remember the first time i met you, you were very, very nice to me. Thats right. I remember, yeah. You told me that you were doing a standup, and he was like, 13 or something. You were young. You were like 15 or 16 when you came to see me. Jimmy yeah. Yeah. Every time for like a year or so, whenever i get off stage, the first guy i see is little jimmy fallon going, good set, sandman, or Something Like that. [ laughter ] jimmy i never said that. I remember i would show up to everything, everything, because i knew where, like, if you were going to be at the improv or something, i would just show up oh yeah. Jimmy and i just idolized you, i still do. You were the nicest a a hundred percent the same kid the same way you are now, you were back then. You were the nicest kid, always, and just besides being a funny bastard, hes such a fan of everybody, and like, thats why were all so happy you are jimmy fallon today, buddy. Youre doing good things. [ cheers and applause ] jimmy i remember i remember you introduced me to chris farley, and you and farley, and i was like, oh my gosh, chris farley. And i thought he was going to be like jumping through a a thing, and he was like hes so calm. Oh yeah. Jimmy and he had glasses, on and he goes, hey, nice to meet you, jimmy. Oh yeah. Jimmy its a pleasure oh youre a fan. What sketch do you like . That one . I go, yeah. And i was telling him one sketch that i love, and just staring at him, and then he went right over from me to you, and you both started going i go, oh my, turned it on in like two seconds, and it was the greatest. Oh god yeah. He was so sweet, and he did not like by the way, one memory of farley, when i told him i went to Dustin Hoffmans house he was like, what . Yeah, i think i think that its basically about a a family that doesnt have religion, but substitutes it with art. And im a sculptor who never became as successful as i wanted to be. And these guys suffered because of it. And hes a musician. And he writes songs. And stiller is a businessman. But i think what i did to them is what many fathers do to their kids is they signal them, nonverbally, not to be better than he is. In other words, not to have more success than the father does. Jimmy interesting, yeah. Dont surpass them. Anybody that jimmy oh, yeah. Hit a chord. Yeah, you can tell. Yeah. You hit a chord there. And your daughter is fantastic. Ive never seen her before. And they were cheering and cheering at the end of it. And theres a video camera in the theater, so they cut to you to see your reaction, you know. Theyre all on their feet, all these nice french people going nuts. And they cut to me and i see me on the big screen. And im like so used to just being an idiot that i just went [ laughter ] like that. Or something dumb like that. You know, what am i why are they showing me . And then they cut to the man. And remember how he was it was just an amazing feeling. And dustin got emotional and was bawling, crying from just, like, the feeling and this overwhelming feeling. And they went so bananas for dustin. And all i could think is, i should i should have done that. [ laughter ] jimmy you should have started crying. That was the best. And its poppy. And its fun. And its, oh, well produced. Thank you. Jimmy well written. Younger now. Can you explain what that means . Like why younger now . Why do you feel younger now . Well, i wrote this song, because one of the first lyrics is, even though its not who i am, im not afraid of who i used to be. And i think theres so many times, maybe in everyones life, but i know in my life where you start to run from who youve been, because youre like, i just dont want to be that anymore. Im not that anymore. But now as im getting older, im getting younger in the way that i embrace who i used to be a lot more than trying to run from it. And i wrote this song because i was dressed as a reindeer, as i would be, it was christmas and i had on the blinking earrings and the antlers. I was a full on reindeer. And my mom goes, when did you go back to being an 8yearold . And i said, well, i feel younger now. I kind of feel like a a 8yearold. I feel like i dont have anything to prove. And i dont feel like i need to be anything but who i am. And its [ bleep ] christmas, mom. And im dressed as a reindeer. Its not that weird. Jimmy up to that point, it was a hallmark card. Yeah, my mom, i was trying to get her to start being my tambourine player. Shes got a sick rhythm. So im trying to get my whole family to just tour together. Be together all the time. So shes going to see this, obviously, but she like carry little a note. So were putting mom on tambo. Jimmy yeah. Everybody can handle the tambourine. Jimmy my mom can sing like just sing with everybody, but she cant, like, really, really sing. And i remember when headphones first were invented. This is how old i am. That was a big deal. Headphones, like, that you can buy in your house and we had her sing something. And it was awful. But she didnt realize that we couldnt hear the music. Right. Jimmy so it was just her with the headset on. I want to say it was was it Rita Coolidge who sand your love is lifting me higher . Questlove yes. Jimmy and her headphones are like buhbumbum, buhbumbum, buhbumbum, bumbum. And shes like and its just completely silent in our house. We should go to one of those raves like that.
