President trump is going to visit the island next tuesday. We have shipped massive amounts of food and water and supplies to puerto rico. We are continuing to do it on an hourly basis. The president blames slow relief on the fact that puerto rico is an island that must be flown to, but says local officials have praised femas efforts. The governor of puerto rico says hes confident President Trump understands how great the damage is on the island, but he also said the island needs more help and called on congress to release more money for recovery. Yesterday the president tweeted that puerto ricos old electrical grid was devastated. He wrote that much of the island was destroyed and billions of dollars are owed to the banks. It could be a mass exodus as food shs gas and cash begin to run low. Hundreds hoping to get off the island are still stranded at the airport, which is barely functioning. It made it tough to communicate with the airlines. The island wont get back to normal for quite awhile. Puerto rico is in a different situation in places like texas and florida. Its been a week since maria hit and due to the lack of supplies, things are getting worse. Hope in puerto rico is dwindling. Many of us, we dont have a lot of money. That will take us a long time to recover from the things that we lost. Reporter aerial views of island show how much was lost. Some communities are still under water and roads are washed away. The u. S. Department of Homeland Security says 1. 6 in 58 hospitals are still without power and 44 of the population are without water. Leaving many to catch water off jugs on a mountainside. Others are forced to limited supplies of water, food and gas. Still have a service making hurricane survivors feel disconnect ed. Its there at the capital where people are lined up along highways desperate to get food and loved ones still waiting to hear from them. The power turned back on but that could take a month. They found out he was an educator, a civil rights activist, a veteran who did a lot for the city he called home, philadelphia. It became the first statue dedicate ed d to a single africanamerican. My hope is every child in philadelphia and every child in america will know as much as octavia as they do about george washington, Benjamin Franklin and march tib luther king. The mayor called him a true american hero. Born in 1839 he led a civil rights movement. A century before the national fight to end segregation. Lifeguards are still on duty here. They are not let iting people io the ocean past their knees. But they say thats still deep enough to be dangerous. The surf in Atlantic City this afternoon getting rougher. People staying out of the ocean. If youre not a highly skilled trained waterman, you have no business being in the water. It remains a serious danger at the jersey shore. Well over 100 have been rescued from the surf. Thee people died after being pulled from the water. Sum isser like weather, big crowds and a vicious ocean creating a hazardous combination for shore communities, which now have very few or no lifeguards on duty. With the nice water temperatures and weather, it is troubling. Police officers and firefighters have carried out three ocean rescues in the past ten days. Officers now working to keep an even closer eye on the beaches. With everything thats going on, were making sure they are out there more than normal. We restrict to knee deep when we have conditions like this. The surge ask k can knock people off their feet quickly. That high risk of rip currents expected to linger for much of this week. Its a a category five hurricane over the island and now it is just a category one storm with winds of 75 Miles Per Hour. But its a much larger storm now. Hurricane force winds extend out 100 miles from the center. And the Tropical Storm force winds extend out over 240 miles from the center. Thats why youre seeing the impacts at the jersey shore and the delaware beaches because of the size of the storm. All those swells generated are moving up to the north. We have to deal with that not only today, tomorrow and then probably those swells begin to relax on friday. As we have been saying all week long shs we dont want you to become desensitized to this. Dont go out for a swim in this kind of weather. Do it in the pool or some other body of water. So we have the august heat in september. Thats continuing here. Not going anywhere for the day tomorrow. So if you havent found a fan or an air conditioner, head to the mall or to the library and cool off for a little while. So its not an ideal beach day.
