This problem. Good morning. This is nbc 10 news today. Im rosemary connors. Its just after 6 00 on this sunday. Plenty to get to. Lets start with our weekend weather and the risk in the water. Meteorologist krystal klei has the details for us. We have issued a first alert for tropical impacts due to hurricane jose. Were going to start this monday evening but last through early thursday morning. Though were starting to feel the impacts already today due to the fact were in a high rip current risk. For the next several days straight, and thats the big deal. We are looking at high surf, high rip current risks, minor coastal flooding possible and some beach erosion especially those areas more prone to this occurring. We want to warn people these are not good days at the shore. Lets look at our tropical satellite. This is hurricane jose. Still a category 1 hurricane. A different location than yesterday. Yesterday it was east of florida. Now its east of georgia and is tracking north. Thats what will lead to more worsening conditions for us at the shore. Its a pretty clear picture out there. Radar trying to pick up a few showers developing. Ill have to check and see if thats a false return or actual showers starting to develop. As we go through today i expect some spotty showers will move across the area. Not everyone will get it but a few spots could get a little good hit. As for temperatures pretty good start. Mid60s to low 70s right now and 80s again this afternoon. Well talk more about that neighborhood by neighborhood coming up. Well check back with you shortly. Thanks, crystal. Hurricane jose is churning up trouble at the shores and beaches as krystal has been telling us. Rip currents at unguarded beaches could be a deadly combination. Nbc 10s Randy Gyllenhaal is live in ocean city with more on the warnings for swimmers. Randy . Reporter a warning for swimmers but were expecting a big crowd here on the boardwalk in ocean city for the final official weekend of summer. Weve got the air show today, at 1 00 as well as the philly pops concert at 7 00 p. M. Take a look down the boardwalk. Theyre getting ready cleaning up the boardwalk a little bit. A warning for all the people who will be here, avoid the water, stay out of the high surf. As krystal mentioned with jose approaching rushing offshore expect three to six foot surf affecting beaches on the shore and down in delaware. And with the high risk of rip currents at this point in the season a lot of beaches have limited lifeguards on duty. Were already seeing some impacts. Yesterday two people rescued down in wildwood. Wildwood firefighters and beach patrol saving a man and woman who were clinging on to a childs boogie board sucked out by a rip current. Enjoy the last official weekend of summer. That air show kicks off at 1 00. The pops concert tonight at 7 00. Theyre asking to you stay out of the water if possible so this last summer ends safely. For now live on the boardwalk, Randy Gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. Good advice. Thanks for that, randy. A man is in Critical Condition after being shot in the stomach in north philadelphia. Nbc 10 was on the scene where Police Received reports of a shooting. The victim arrived at the hospital in a private car possibly taken by a friend or family member. Police are now investigating. Also new this morning a woman is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Police found her on south 59th street in southwest philly. They took her to penn presbyterian hospital. Detectives are trying to determine who shot her and why. Theres no word yet on any arrest in this case. Now to new information about a septa derailment near the Spring Garden stop in philadelphia. The Transit Agency says operations are back to normal following yesterdays mishap on the market frankfurt line. One car of the septa train went off the track while approaching the Spring Garden station. The problem jostled riders aboard the train and impacted travel for hours. You can see the train sitting sideways in between lanes of i95. This is where the tracks run. More than two dozen passengers onboard were forced to wait without any update from septa. Eventually officials cut power to the rail so that riders could safely step off the train and onto shuttle buses. Medics treated one passenger, he was on a stretcher for heat exhaustion. Riders tell us another passenger suffered a panic attack. The train just went off the track. I thought we were going to the highway. I was scared. Are we going to fall . Whats happening . Nobody said anything. I need a car. Im not getting on this no more. Septa is blaming it on an equipment problem while the train was crossing over tracks because of scheduled maintenance work. Yesterdays derailment comes less than a month after a septa crash sent more than 30 people to the hospital. You may remember back on august 22nd a norristown highspeed line train smashed into the 6 th Street Transportation Center in upper darby. The ntsb is still investigating that crash. Today in Montgomery County students will find out if school is in session tomorrow. School administrators and the Teachers Union will head back to the negotiation table to try to avoid a strike. They gave them a 48hour strike notice. Teacher wages and insurance premiums. The two sides have until 8 00 this evening to reach a deal. Thats when we will find out if they have reached an agreement and if the teachers will strike or not. New overnight demonstrations in st. Louis turned violence as they protest the acquittal of a while Police Officer in the shooting death of an africanamerican man. They broke windows and threw rocks at police. The unrest forced authorities to suspend bus and Light Rail Service to one neighborhood and it caused the rock band u2 to cancel a show. This is ridiculous. Blm protesters. Honor the cause. Protest peacefully. That protesters brought a broom she says she was planning to use to sweep up broken glass at a starbucks. More protests this weekend. This one in richmond, virginia. A small group rallied in support of keeping a statue of confederate general robert e. Lee. They were surrounded by several hundred counter demonstrators who want it taken down. The gathering here was peaceful and no reports of any arrests. Meantime in washington supporters of President Trump gathered for an event they called the mother of all rallies. They say this rally was held to support, quote, traditional american culture, end quote. The webpage also says that no confederate flags would be allowed. A Marine Charity race at the jersey shore canceled last year after a terror attack went off as you can see without a hitch yesterday and people are crediting both security efforts and a renewed determination by the participants. A woman says two dogs rescued friday night from a storm drain belong to her and the pets are now safe and sound and back at home. Neighbors heard the dogs barking and called for. Crews went down the drain friday and pulled out the two pups. They were sopping wet, cold, probably scared. One of the dogs is 10, the other 5. Its still a mystery as to how ended up down the storm drain. Officials at a florida Wildlife Hospital say they are overwhelmed as they try to care for wild animals in Hurricane Irma. People have brought in 220 to the Wildlife Hospital and sanctuary. Some of those animals include birds, rare seen in the area. One that is usually nest in the bahamas but were blown all the way to florida. The hospital is for donations of money and basic supplies to help them repair damage to the sanctuary and care for the dozens of new mouths to feed. People who live in the florida keys are returning home for the First Time Since Hurricane Irma roared right through their neighborhoods. One week after the storm this is just some of the devastation left behind. Trees toppled, boats overturned, hundreds of homes just gone. The hardest hit areas closed off all week will reopen later on today. Officials are warning people not to expect things to get back to normal for quite some time. Lets head now to port arthur, texas. People flooded out by Hurricane Harvey are now moving into tents. Emergency officials put up more than 200 tents in this parking lot, each one can house more than a dozen people. Fema and local officials are working on a longterm housing solution. Harvey swamped coastal texas and louisiana just last month. Ing of the hurricane, philadelphia archdiocese will be collecting donations for Hurricane Relief efforts. This is a live look, a cloudy look over the basilica of saints peter and paul. The archdiocis has asked them to take up a onetime collection. All of the funds will go through Catholic Charities usa which is helping storm recovery efforts. All right. Were starting with radar and satellite view. This picture is very similar to yesterday. Not much of anything to track across the entire region aside for some high clouds. A closer look and we have one small area of a few scattered showers rolling by. It looks like right by parts of burks county and Chester County appearing to shift to the southwest. Not impacting us much. A few isolated showers this morning. A cloud and sunshine mix. Its not going to be all day rain, its not going to be a washout. Like yesterday a small shower could roll over a small area and dump a good deal of rain. Most of us didnt get a drop. Take a look at temperatures today. Upper 70s to low 80s. An isolated storm developing although i think thats less likely than a heavier shower popping up. We see low to mid80s for high temperatures in delaware today with that mix of clouds and sunshine. Stay out of the water and this is something i will be saying over and over with the next few days thanks to hurricane jose. It is starting to approach us from the south which means it will be more rough seas than weve been seeing. Tracking jose. Winds are 80 miles per hour. Look at this cone as it goes through. It is a direct north drive. Still a category 1 hurricane even to the east of north carolina. The winds stay around 75 miles an hour. As we go from Tuesday Morning to wednesday morning this is what it is likely to stay to the east of us. The cone shows well feel more impacts with those harsher waters. Still a good distance. First alert for the delaware beaches. Some steady rain is possible. Minor coastal flooding. Beach erosion. Wind gusts 40 to 50 miles an hour and rough seas expected which leads to the high rip current risk. This is Tropical Storm maria and that is Tropical Storm lee. Well be keeping a close eye on it. The storm will impact the delaware beaches and the jersey shore as early as tomorrow night rather, this evening and today. Swimming in the ocean is dangerous. Two swimers in wildwood had to be rescued after getting caught in rip currents. Well go down the shore in a moment. First, lets check in with meteorologist krystal klei who has the details. Weve issued the first alert going through thursday morning because thats looking like well see the highest threat throughout that time period. High surf and Dangerous Development will be a big concern because jose has been churning up the waters. A high rip current risk starting today. Minor coastal flooding and beach erosion possible as a result of jose even though it will not be making landfall near us. We will feel those impacts. So tropical satellite showing us where jose is right now directly to the of georgia and is now running a line straight to the north. What will happen here is its going to run parallel to the east coast and then start to hook right around the time that it approaches new england and that is going to bring the big swells to our area. As four our temperatures, though, right now this is looking like a good sunday ahead. 69 in philadelphia and 66 in mt. Holly. 68 in allentown. Your sky conditions currently are fairly clear. A Police Officer who was assaulted while rounding up suspected car thieves is expected to be okay. Nbc 10 was on the near 66th street angd garrard avenue wher he was attacked while helping to arrest four men. They took off but police recaptured them about a half hour later. A pedestrian is dead following an accident in Burlington County a. Driver struck and killed a person walking near route 73 and collins avenue. The driver did stop at the scene. This happened about 2 30 this morning. As you can see the investigation shut down route 73 in both directions. Weve been checking on this. It is still closed this hour. The driver of a car that rolled over in philadelphia is recovering this morning. Nbc 10 was first on the scene at 42nd and first streets in University City where the accident happened around 1 00. Rescue crews had to remove the driver from the car. Were working to find out more about her condition. Now new information about a septa derailment in philadelphias Spring Garden neighborhood. Im not convinced its not making it to the ground, but due to the reflection, the yellow and the reds would indicate a heavier rain and it hasnt moved the last half hour or so which could lead to flood concerns if making it to the ground. Now to the latest on the london terror attack, a second suspect, a 21yearold man, is in Police Custody this morning. It comes after authorities made what theyre calling a very significant arrest in the case yesterday. Police raided this house in a london bush following the second suspects arrest. Investigators were seen coming and going from the home. Theres no word on what, if anything, they turned up in the search of that house. Earlier yesterday Police Detained an 18yearold man in the port of dover. Thats the main ferry link to france. Authorities are now questioning him in london. Police have not released any other information but, again, they are calling this arrest, their first one, significant. Britain is still on Critical Alert after a device partially detonated inside of the subway car friday morning injuring 30 people. Back here in our area in south jersey a Camden County community is coming this weekend to remember a u. S. Sailor who died in the line of duty. Yesterday friends and family gathered just outside st. Andrews United Methodist church to pay their respects to 22yearold ken smith. Smith was aboard the uss john s. Mccain when it collided with an oil tanker just off the coast of singapore last month. Smith was an Electronics Technician but was promoted to 2nd class following his death, a Third Generation sailor who graduated from cher Hill High School east in 2013. This weekend a fallen philadelphia firefighter was among those honored at an annual Memorial Service in colorado. The International Association of firefighters holds a fallen firefighter ceremony every year in colorado springs. This year the service paid tribute to philadelphia firefighter gabriel lee who died in the line of duty in july of 2016. 6 47 right now on this sunday and just about 69 degrees outside in philadelphia.
