Walney's Debbie Wassall becomes the first to receive the Chief Scout Award

A Walney girl became the first in Cumbria to receive the Chief Scout Award in 1994.
Girls had only been allowed to join the Scouts two years previously and Debbie Wassall was one of the first.
SCOUTS: St George’s Cubs, Scouts and Leaders in 1994 before setting off on a trip to Holland, where they spent a week on a site with groups from a variety of countries
Debbie, 16, along with six boys from her troop, was presented with her award in Carlisle.
Also in 1994 The Mail reported that Scouts in St Petersburg, Russia, would soon be equipped for hikes thanks to Duddon and High Furness Scouts.
