Youth detention center on chopping block

CONCORD — The proposed budget headed for a House vote this week would force the closure of New Hampshire’s youth detention center next year, though the head of the agency overseeing it calls the plan unrealistic.
Rep. Jess Edwards, R-Auburn, said the House Finance Committee’s recommendation to shut down the Sununu Youth Services Center in Manchester marked “a moment of high bipartisanship in the committee.”
“It was really kind of the highlight of our getting along and trying to do what’s right for the community,” he said on Monday as the committee briefed other House members on their $13.5 billion, two-year budget proposal.
