NEWPORT, N.H.  — A fire that started in a strip mall on Route 11/103 early Monday morning destroyed one business and sent firefighters scrambling to rescue animals from a shelter next door.
Newport Fire Chief Steven Yannuzzi said the blaze at 49 John Stark Highway, which is still under investigation, heavily damaged Camden Brook Market and Cafe.
While smoke made its way to surrounding businesses, Yannuzzi said, the fire remained contained to Camden Brook.
“The fire was knocked down relatively quickly,” he said, adding no one was injured.
Yannuzzi said firefighters were called around 6:45 a.m. to a report of smoke inside Wags & Wiggles Dog Rescue. When first responders arrived, he said, they worked quickly to rescue six dogs before making their way inside Camden Brook.
