We’re learning just how much you’re protected once you’ve gotten the COVID-19 vaccine. Right now, half of all Oklahoma adults are fully vaccinated. During previous hospitalization waves, hospitals like The University of Oklahoma Medical Center (now OU Health) started to fill up fast with COVID-19 patients. Health officials don’t expect as big a surge this time because of the number of people who have been vaccinated. But they still think the number of hospitalizations will continue to climb.“We’re seeing a doubling of people in the hospital with COVID-19 in the past 10 days or so and a large number of people in intensive care units,” said Dr. Dale Bratzler, OU Health chief COVID-19 officer.Bratzler said the new COVID-19 patients are younger and mostly unvaccinated. The state Health Department now says that of the 1.5 million Oklahomans who have been fully vaccinated, only 107 have been hospitalized – 0.007%. It underscores how powerful the vaccines are. Even in the few cases where vaccinated people test positive, they rarely get very sick. But health officials are still trying to reach out to the roughly half of the state that hasn’t gotten the shot, with the message that it’s time to get it. “If you just look at Pfizer and Moderna, we’ve given 369 million doses in the United States alone. These vaccines are incredibly safe – some of the safest we’ve ever had, and very effective also,” Bratzler said.
