Just two rounds into the 17 race season, there was a surprise leader at the top of the points and a rookie had tied a longstanding record earning a victory in just his second career start. The defending series champ had you have to find the podium in 2013, but that did not change Ryan Villopotos approach heading into round three. The goal every week is to win, be consistent, and obviously have a good time. It hasnt gone as planned. We still scored five points, not too bad for what happened. Phoenix was definitely better. In a position i felt i could go and get the win. I got second, that is good, here we are now in race three. I think the ball is starting to roll, making progress every week we go back. A typical week. We get things as they seem to get easier. When the gates dropped for round three, the champ left little doubt he was ready to enter the battle for the points lead. Who is going to get it . Justin barcia with was a good t for a lousy date pits. Justin barcia gives up a spot. Justin barcia has big problems, he is dropping like a rock. They narrowly missed him, keeping it on two wheels. Look at the blood on his face. Change for the lead at the front of the screen as well, canard moves into the top spot. And now, villopoto gets around millsaps to take over second. Villopoto is a man on a mission tonight. Fastest qualifier. Villopoto has closed in on trey canard. I asked trey, what do you have to do to get this win done . He said i just have to complete it. Ive got the speed, just got to get it done. Villopoto wants to win as well, here he comes. The anaheim crowd on their feet im just not sure villopoto will be denied here today. He is showing why he is the reigning twotime champion. He has the flow, he is dominating his motorcycle. Here he comes, he knows this is a big one. There it is, Ryan Villopoto, he takes his first win of 2013. Tonight was pretty much perfect. Seems like we are on the right track. It has been warm, slick track dried out a lot, so really technical in that sense, so i thought it ended up being a really good race track. Im pumped. While the series started with three different winners in the first three races for the second time in as many years, the memory fans of anaheim would take away from round three was the sudden retirement of one of the sports living legends. Kevin windham supercross career began in 1995, along the way the centreville mississippi native earned a reputation as the most fluent, perfect rider on the track. During his 18 year career, the rider known by his legions of fans collected to support class titles and 18 career 450 supercross main event wins. His performance at opening ceremonies became legendary. From centreville, mississippi, riding for geico, honda, number 14, Kevin Windham. He retired in anaheim with 207 career 450 supercross stars, second alltime. However for the 34yearold, the face of racing had become too quick, the obstacles too big to negotiate with 20 other riders on the track, and the time had come to walk away. Everybody i talked to, they all said if i have these thoughts in my head, it is time. Theres no other question, quit asking yourself anything. Even today, talking to Ryan Villopoto. Talking about retirement and when to go. What is another race, another trophy, it is all great stuff, but it will be bad when it comes to an end. How greedy are you, how many times will you roll the dice . It is something i have been struggling with since the middle of 2012. Riding for the final years of his career with geico, he knows leaving behind the people who made his career will be difficult as he tries to move on to life without racing. I work with some of the best people in the world, and i can say the whole geico honda program in the industry as a whole, i felt a lot of love and a lot of respect, a lot of honor from everybody in the industry. You take that and with the fans who have been behind me 100 , the best part of my career, giving meaning to the story we reminisce and autograph signings with racers that were in 94, even 84, there are still stories coming out from time to time. It turns those trophies into a real memory, a real feeling. This retirement for me feels like a chapter. Just the next chapter. I dont know that i will ever do anything that will make me feel or give me the feeling of accomplishment for what i have already done and achieved, but it was something that eventually had to come. Today was the right day, the right time. What comes next will become clear in the upcoming weeks and it will not be far away from supercross. With Kevin Windham on the sidelines, championship moved up the coast to oakland. Former champions jim stewart, chad reed and ryan dungey were still looking for their first win of the season. Monster energy ama supercross midseason review will return after this message and a word from your local stations. But the ones you can find in your heart. Because inspiration doesnt favor those who sit still. It dances with the daring and rewards the courageous with ideas. Ideas that inspire. Ideas that take you places you never imagined. Ideas big enough to make the heart skip a beat and, in some cases, maybe two. Toyota. Lets go places. And, in some cases, maybe two. As the first of the season was coming to a close, season had been robbed by the retirement of longtime fan favorite Kevin Windham. Still the sport seems to be in a position of strength as young stars like Justin Barcia and points leader Davi Millsaps were staking their claim to the lions share of attention. When the gates dropped in round four at oakland, the mantra of the 70s and plus the 80s were on their mind before the gates dropped. Just win, baby. Watch the gates dropped. How about the shot, whos going to get it . It is villopoto. Stuart is in there, bunch of riders are bunched up including trey canard. He is holding his right leg. The member, he has a problem with his knee. His right knee had ligament damage, he is frustrated comedy can tell by the body language. Two former champions. Justin barcia right there. For many of the contenders coming opportunity for a momentum shifting winds whipped away at the end of lap number one. And everyone had their own story of how it went down. Speaker usually after the first turn, all of us were going in on the gas hot. All on the edge next to the hay bales. The incident happened on that side, i had that speed going, i went flying into the shoulder, took it pretty hard hit. It was definitely not fun at all. I kind of saw reed coming out, ended up hitting my front tire. I stuck in his back wheel and drug into it and ended up taking half the field with us. Millsaps and i are fighting for the lion, he just beat me there. Elected my front wheel, sent me off to the right. And then we were pretty much out of control. Drove it up into the middle of the turn and it affected everybody else. He cut across, ended up hitting Davi Millsaps and ended up collecting grant and that sent him back into me. So i was innocent bystander did at the top of the firm. Out front and leading it and pulling away. And the champ is picking up where he left off one week ago. He has been flying all day long. And here is dungey fighting over forth. Ryan keeps on getting closer to the front. Dungey making the moves. Trey canard has some problems. Canard tries to pass, there is a poll, a tough block. He rebounds quickly, but watch this, really aggressive. Actually landed on the tough rocks. Watch right here. He tries to turn down and dungey is fair, that is going to cost him. A couple of more obstacles and Ryan Villopoto will have his second win of 2013. Here he comes, villopoto lights the candles in oakland. The twotime champ is a twotime winner in 2013. The win in oakland gave Ryan Villopoto two wins in a row. The point standings still showed millsaps and canard at the top, but the defending champ had climbed within Single Digits of the lead it had reminded everyone as to why he is considered the best rider in the world. A third trip to and chaim fittingly came on groundhog day essay list to keep villopoto for making it three straight victories. While millsaps remained consistent, the momentum belongs to the champ after his wins in round three and four. Somebody had to step up and break the spell is cast over the fielfields in the past two even. That someone would be ryan dungey. Although he would earn his first minivan victory of 2013 in a very unusual fashion. And ryan dungey with problems. A problem with the shock. He has to trust them ahead of him. Thi the 30second board went, trying to get the bike warmed up, felt a little bit of a snag in the rear. The bikes are wrapped up, caused some air to leak out. I knew right away, so i pulled back. Only two riders begin t makeo the main event from the last chance qualifier, in this race did not start much better than the heat race for the rider. Is way on the outside, he does not get the whole shot. And a huge pileup, massive read cars are going down everywhere in there. You can see on the 85. Sometimes i find myself on the ground, it is easy to give up. I am not a person to give up, when youre on the ground and in 13th place, it only takes two guys in six laps, that is an easy way to get frustrated and to give up. A different story when it is your last chance in the top guys are going to the main event and i am not. I cannot afford that right now, nor do i ever want to. It is critical at this point in the season. Dungey right now listed in 12th. Just the top two go. He moves up to ninth. Have to get after it and make aggressive moves. Here is one, that will put him in fifth. In and around into force. That is forth. What can he do now . Going on third. He has to get one more. I got to third place, so moved up really quick. The first and second, they had five or six seconds on me. I knew i could catch them, but it was that last lap that i knew making the pass was going to be difficult. It could have gone better the way things worked out. He is guarding inside. There is dungey oh, he blocks him can he get him on the inside . Full throttle, these got its hes going to go for the checkered, hes going to get the win here. And dungey is going to the main. After being the last rider to qualify for the main event, dungey was stuck with the final gate all the way on the outside. The former champ made it work and was more than ready to accept a little bit of good fortune to come his way. Villopoto gets boxed in on the inside. On the 800 around the outside. And chad reed is right there. He is down. Two weeks in a row. Villopoto coming from the back of the pack. Villopoto got stuck in there, and dungey around the outside is now second, and this one is upside down going for the lead is dungey. Coming inside on it. The red bull rider has the lead. And he gets tossed off of his bike villopoto working great, oh, no. He gathers it back up, loses ground. Stewart to the inside. Got a little kick coming down the drag. Lets see how Davi Millsaps, our points leader, response to this. Dungey out in front right now. Three seconds. Lets talk about stewart for a second. That will do it in a hurry. Here comes millsaps. With all the diversity he has had. With all the adversity stewart has had to face this year how frustrating is for a rider like stewart basically has gone for the win and to be laboring through this season with horrible finishes, no top five and now to be out there right now, this is a pretty strong right for him tonight. He misses the triple. And that opens the door for Davi Millsaps. There you go. Millsaps into second. That ought to do it for him now. Right here. Really quick, the last lap around he took a stab at stewart, cost him. And there goes Justin Barcia. Ryan dungey, the former champ car making it take statement. An unbelievable up and down night. Battling through. Here he is, ryan dungey lights the candles in anaheim with an amazing win. Crossing the finish line and winning, it was pure excitement. When a rider or a team is facing adversity, how well they can come through it and get back on top. With nearly one third of the season complete, Rockstar Energy raising Davi Millsaps had extended his points lead, but for different riders on four different brands had one main events with the final race in california coming up, the 2013 season had the markings of a fight to the finish. Ricky carmichaels road to supercross revives a simulated environment that will help riders get better prepared as they bridge the gap between the arena cross and monster Energy Supercross. A rider must earn three roads of supercross points and write a minimum of three cross events in a season in order to receive a supercross endorsement from the ama. This new system provides the best training and opportunity for riders who are working hard to make the starting gate of monster Energy Supercross. It gets them in that environment before they get to monster Energy Supercross series because no matter how much time you spend on the test track in the offseason, no matter how many laps you put in, nothing prepares you for being in an environment like that, it closed in stadium, racing is really tight, everything is coming up so quick, doing tv interviews, being on the podium, autograph sessions, lots of other little things. That is really what it is all about. Is an excellent job helping to prepare for the supercross career. That is always a huge goal. The track is tight, have to be little bit more determined. Supercross to hear a lot of the guys complaining it is too tight, not a lot of passing. I am proud to be a part of the arena cross. For the future of both sports, it is a great step in the right direction. I really cannot wait to see the effects of it and how it will work. A month and a half of west coast races would come to an end with around six in san diego. For australian chad reed, to meet his best chance to gain tharelevance. With events in qualcomm stadium, san diego stock had the feel of home turf. But Davi Millsaps had tasted success at the former Southern California stop. Road to victory here in 2010. These two riders would set the early pace when the gate dropped on round six. Millsaps with the lead, the points leader gets the whole shot, and the magic continues its chad reed upfront. Chad reed with six victories at qualcomm stadium, he loves this joint. And look at stewart, splitting the gap and that is all up inside the top five. Here comes villopoto. That is going to put ryan in seventh. There is millsaps, and reed is right there. I am telling you. This is proof right here, chad did not have a good day. Here he is shrinking millsaps stay. He is thinking about seven times here in san diego. Oh, reed goes down, he loses the front end gets it going. He cant get it fired, now the honda comes to life. Stewart goes by, villopoto goes by. Tough rake for the australian. Suzuki has never won here in san diego, and Davi Millsaps taking them to the top of the paipodium. Winning here in san diego. Wiretowire win. Fighting all the way to the checkers. That was for six, seventh and eighth. And reed had a shot at the win and ends up in fifth. At san diego, millsaps made his 100th consecutive supercross start. His consistency and dedication has paid off. He rode onto his second win of the season in san diego. Having won the first race and then podium and podium and winning another one, it is just, words cant explain it. Youre used to title contenders the preseason coming into the season and delivering. The guys to talk about throughout the season going from anaheim to las vegas. Here is a guy who is completely off the radar from the preseason conversations and all the sudden he wins the biggest race, the Season Opener, he is held the points lead all the way through california and i dont want to say unbeatable, whether these other guys dont step up their game pretty quick, they wont beat him and he could be the champion before we are all done. The former champions, trey canard, guys like that have to be more consistent and consistently great off of the start. This season Davi Millsaps has been consistent, kept himself out of trouble. Every other one of the riders who have had some sort of problems off of the start at one time or another. They can master the start, a lot of guys are fast enough to win. With all of these guys doing with Davi Millsaps and how great he has been, number one they have to start winning races and they cannot make mistakes. That has been their achilles heel in the first half of the series and it will happen as time runs down this opportunity to take advantage of that will pass them by. They will simply run out of time. They have to start planning now and hope he has some bad races. As the riders prepare for their practice lap, they were not ready as they worked previously on the suzuki, it would be obvious James Stewart would not be able to compete in the event. Making his way out of Cowboy Stadium. Frustration all over James Stewarts face. Your suffering a mechanical problem, can you explain what is happening . Something happened to the clutch. It is not these guys fault, just a freak accident. It is a bummer, we felt good. I felt like tonight was my night. The gate would drop with stewart on the sidelines and the defending champ out front. Try to come from the inside, will it be millsaps . It is. Chad reed will come across in second. Dungey sits in fourth. The victory here a year ago. Cutting to the inside. It was his third of the season and it proved to him a relaxed and happy rider is the most effective rider. Everybody knows this sport is stressful, but you still have to have fun with it. We have to start thinking that way. Putting our self up on the pedestal and when things dont go our way, we corrected. When we return on cbs, round number eight.
