Avs today the Republican Party controls the house and as of today the democratic Party Controls the senate. And also, as of today, whether the house or senate will flip . Will get this. According to a new nbc wall street journal poll conducted three weeks ago the senate, now democratic, will flip to the republicans. The poll found that 43 of registered voters, that is registered voters say they want the republicans to control the senate as compared to 41 who want the democrats to retain control. As for the house, 43 want the republicans to retain control. No flip. As compared to 41 . Republicans may preen over these numbers but they should keep in mind 50 of registered voters think congress on the whole has been one big collection of do nothings, as compared to 3 , who say it has been very productive. Question. Is it likely the Marilee Joyce poll overstates democratic strength . Pat buchanan . I think the republicans are going to win the senate. Narrowly they may hold the house, gain a couple of seats. But what are the republicans going to get . The Congress Approval was at 14 in a poll a week ago, nbc poll. Even if they have the senate they are not going to overcome a filibuster by harry reids democrats or overcome a veto by the president. So they are going to have to compromise with him. That is going to come at the expense of republican principles. Finally john, you ought to remember the 80th Congress Republicans took over both houses in 1946. Harry truman pounded that to a pulp and one election in his own right. So im not sure republican control of the congress the next two years is going to be a great political boone to the party. Are you making a prediction here or not . I think if the republicans control both ress they are going to have problems not producing themselves in 2016. Eleanor . I dont think republicans are making all those calculations. Right now winning isnt everything, no, winning is everything. Winning is everything, it is the only thing for republicans going into november. They really want to get the senate and the way the where the races fall six of the seven races are in states that romney won by big margins. Republicans are going to have to screw up to not take control. But they are perfectly capable of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They are on this impeachment kick or sue the president kick. Bjork is turning out to be successful, not the silver bullet, benghazi has from therred away and people hate congress. So there is a chance the democrats could hold their own. Susan . So you have gotten senate seats, 13 house seats held by democrats that are toss ups. Only two republicans in the house or senate are toss ups. Those numbers alone suggest republicans have a far better chance. The democrats are out raising the republicans. In key races. And that is going to give them a Real Advantage here. As eleanor said, republicans could do something that happens between now and november that makes it harder for them, certainly it wouldnt be unprecedented for that to happen. I also agree with pat. If the democrats lose and republicans take over the senate, therefore wed have republicans in the house and senate, it is going to be difficult for them to govern. Not only because we have a democratic president but because there are key issues they dont agree o they are going to fight and there is going to be a last pressure on them and Approval Ratings are terrible as it is. You are aware this is an off year election. It is a midterm election. What is the turnout in off year . But higher than an off, off year, which would be the last election we had where a few governors were up. We have been seeing higher turnouts lately. However that is going to hurt democrats if you get your more impassioned people turning out, it usually helps the underdog. Heres the data. In off year elections voters turnout eg, likely to have an axe to grind against the incumbent party in power. The results are very different from registered voters. That is part of the reason why republicans could take over the senate. Say you get impassioned conservative voters turning out, that could help them. However democrats could gain from hispanic voters turning out, especially if the president decides to take key executive actions this summer that would help hispanics who are perhaps living here illegally. I agree you will have red state democrats denouncing the president. I think they are willing to lose those democrats for it. It would be a tremendous fire storm. Executive amnesty is the word the people on the right are putting out. But that is not what the president is going to do. He is going act within his own constitutional boundaries. Is there deep pessimism about the country and the leadership of the country . Yes i think there is. Is that going to influence how people vote . Of course it is. The single most powerful influence on the attitude of the average american is the economy. We still have a very serious and very slow growing economy with a lot of people on part time work. Very weak improvements if their standard of living, compared to where we see the upper 1 as the, cliche goes. It is going to drive a lot of people and be held it is at the feet of the president. The democrats if they can get their beam to the polls, nancy pelosi said a couple of weeks ago half of our supporters dont even know there is an election. You have to get people engaged in some of the issues already we have talked about could do that. The question is who these people who are being hurt, who do they hold responsible for this . I think the Republican Congress. They look at the president always. The president is the leader of the country. He is not on the ballot. But he is the leader of the democratic party. He is not helping the democrats but the republicans are helping the republicans and the Republican Congress has basement low ratings. A 1000point drop in the dow in the last company of weeks i think is going to have an impact on the economy and on the election. The 1 ers wont vote. Exit exit question. Please restrain from interfering with the progress of the show. In 2010 obama took a self described shell lacking in the midterm elections. Are the democrats in for another . I think they are going to lose the senate and i think the republicans might pick up a couple of seats in the house, because usually they win the house even when they have a lower electoral turnout . Given the nature of the math, i think the republicans are not going to do as well as they anticipate and there are democratic surprises out there, michelle none none in georgia and kentucky. It will be a healthy victory for the republicans. Theyll win the senate and pick up seats in the house. That is a shell lacking. Shell lacking will be picking up 40 seats in the house. They wont get the 60 votes they need. We may be a problem of nomenclature. Ultimately this will be seen as a victory for the republicans. They will pick up seats in the senate and the house to do that. I predicted the republicans will pick up the senate. Yours was right on the mark. Insightful . Insightful and when you think about how far in advance you predicted there. The wisdom of age. Dont forget the Mclaughlin Group has its own website. You can watch this program or earlier programs on the web anytime from anywhere in the world at mclaughlin. Com. When we come back, Capital Punishment. Is it time to give Capital Punishment Capital Punishment . Nks issue two. Capital punishment. Closed his eyes, he went to sleep. Then he started gasping and he did he gasped for more than an hour and a half. Reporter witnesses to the lethal injection of Joseph Rudolph wood in arizona said mr. Wood gasped and snorted over 600 times before dying. Normally inmates who are lethally injected die within ten to 15 minutes. Wood was not pronounced dead until two hours after the injection. One hour after the injection woods attorney phoned a judge to stop the execution. But before the judge could rule, wood was dead. He was convicted for the 1989 shooting deaths of his estranged girlfriend, debby dietz and her father. Wood was on death row for 23 years. Everybody is more worried about did he suffer . Who really suffered was my dad and my sister who they were killed. The drugs that sedate and stop someones breathing, the drugs were injected 15 times during the execution before wood died. The two drugs are a mixture, also used in ohio earlier this year, on convicted Dennis Mcguire who gasped. Now the Arizona Execution have caused the governors of those states who launched the reviews of execution process. For years the drug pent tow bash toll was used but now its european manufacturers decided to stop selling it to u. S. Prisons. Eu does not have the Death Penalty. Despite state moratoriums issued in botched executions and others due to people found innocent after being executed, 32 u. S. States have the Death Penalty as compared to 18 states and the district of columbia, where it is outlawed. In the states that have the Death Penalty continue to execute. Convicted rapist and killer Michael Worthington was put to death in missouri, making him the first to die by lethal injection after the botched execution of joseph wood. Question. Is it disingenuous for Capital Punishment foes to lobby to bar the production of the lethal drugs used in executions and then to take advantage of the resulting botched executions to garner Media Attention . Do you follow that. Yeah and i think you have got a point. But that is not the main problem here. Look the fact that some of these people convicted and sentenced to death take a few minutes to die. A lot of people, john, take an awful long time to die, who are innocent and good people. That doesnt bother me. The point of it is, do you want to have this Death Penalty on the books . I agree it ought to be decided at the state level. You future do everything you can to avoid aspects of torture. But the real problem with the Death Penalty for people, john, isnt the minutes it takes to die. It is the months and years of anticipation that they are going to die by a date certain, and that the society and the community has willed their death. It is that tmon a persons conscience and belief system that is far more problematic than putting a needle in their arm and letting them die in two minutes or ten minutes. I agree with what pat is saying. It is the anticipation of death not only by the people who have been convicted but by those associated with them. It is a terribly difficult issue for an American Public to deal with. This has been a part like it or not of the american way in dealing with people who have killed other people. The question is, are we, at this point, beyond that kind of behavior . I think there are a lot of people who are feeling we dont need the Death Penalty, frankly. There is a profound sense of unease, about putting another human being willing and willfully to death. That shows up in the way we handle all of these sort of cases of the botched executions. And it is a state by state, reflects sort of the culture in the valleys of the political establishment in the various states. So i think it is going to continue to be for t you are not going to have a federal ban. That could get through. Then in tennessee, where they dont have the proper dosages and are comfortable with that, they have now written into the law that they are bringing the ex cautioners chair back electric chair. You remember michael due cookies . You remember the debate. I sure do. Bernie shaw asked if your wife was raped and murdered would you favor the Death Penalty. He said no. That killed his election possibilities. He was going downey how. Question that he would have felt a great deal of emotion if this happened in real life. But he was responding as a potential president ial candidate not as a husband. Torches out it was a political mistake. Would you have liked to have seen him president of the United States . I was not old enough to vote at the time. Stevens, that is the Supreme Court justice retired, who wrote this book, by the way, six amendments and why we should change the constitution. John paul stevens. The eighth amendment of the u. S. Constitution reads quote excessive bail shall not be required nor excessive fines imposed nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. Many believe the words cruel and unusual punishments apply to the Death Penalty, which is and of itself, for its abolition. And former Supreme Court judge John Paul Stevens is now one of the abolitionists. Stephens, nominated by president gerald ford, served on the high court 1975 to 2010. In his new book, six amendments, how and why we should change the constitution, Justice Stephens proposes adding five words to the language of the eighth amendment. Quote excessive bail shall not be required nor excessive fines imposed nor cruel and unusual punishments such as the Death Penalty inflicted. Unquote. He wanted to revise the constitution, which now reads excessive bail shall not be ride required nor cruel and unusual punishments. Constitution stops there. He wants the included such as the Death Penalty inflicted. Could an antiDeath Penalty constitutional amendment such as former justice stevens, who had enormous experience proposed, could that pass today . No. It needs three fourths of the senate. 32 states still practicing the Death Penalty. If you do the math, i dont think you could get victories on capitol hill. His recommendation is going to continue this dialogue now in a very serious way. It is a good idea. When will iting be passed . State by state will decide. Within one decade. Of the 15 countries in the world, 58 nations still remain stain Capital Punishment. Afghanistan, belarus, china, cuba, egypt, india, indonesia, iran, iraq, jordan, lebanon, may labor, nigeria, north korea, oh, man, south korea, pakistan, sudan, syria, thailand, uganda, United States, vietnam, yemen, zimbabwe. The ones that outlaw are western companies who no longer believe in dying. The rising countries you take these islamic countries, all of them. They believe this these types of finality for their enemies. One of those countries dont believe in it after due process of law. You have these renegade groups arising. You sound like a republican. That is not souping republican. That is talking about what reality is out there and they are inflicting these penalties, chopping off hands. We saw that in the last part of the last century as well. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Exit question. Is Capital Punishment like abortion . One of those political divides. And claims of justice on both sides that it will always be contentious. It is about religion and morality. It is but it has become less contentious. Innocent people are being killed our legal system has made mistakes. A lot have had their Death Penalty convictions overturned. In cases where the person has already been put to death. I think a number of mistakes are in their 40s, what do you think . 144 Death Penalty cases have been overturned. I think there are enough of them that are overturned to make this a viable issue. A real issue for a lot of people. You think you can see the future that will go away . I dont know the exact day. But ill give you the year. Will it go away before the end of the century . 23 years after i die. The majority of the states have stopped the penalty. What . Even though you to say only 18 states prohibit it, 36 states prohibit it or now prohibit it. The governor has decided to stop it on their own. It was reinstated in 176 o so it was gone before then. I think the Younger Generation is going to get rid of it. Well be right back, with predictions. Predictions . Barack obama will do some kind of amnesty for the illegal aliens by labor day. Win or lose for the democrats from the p senate in 14, they will win the majority in 16 because it will favor them. Susan . Foreign policy issues are going to be the dom nan problem for the president in the next two years. Mort . I predict that corruption investigation into former finish sister of public security, chinas internal security czar will cause problems in communist party ruling segments. There will be a struggle unlike any scene since he took on the gang of four in the 1970s. Bye bye. Welcome to Government Contracting weekly sponsored by aoc Key Solutions, inc.
