No to title ii. About to explode. Osgood whats in a name is no idle question when it comes to ll cool j who stars in cbs show ncis l. A. Hes an actor, a rapper, host of the Grammy Awards Michelle Miller has discussed that with the man himself. Make some noise watching ll cool j back stage is like watching a boxer getting ready to enter the ring. He gets psyched up, gelled up, loosened up. And then the bell sounds. Have you ever had a problem with self confidence . No. Thats never been my issue. No thats never been my issue. Self confidence, together with talent and a lot of drive made him a rap star. This night is about music. And lately, hes the face of the grammys after winning two of the awards himself. Tonight hell host the show for the fourth time. Do you ever ask yourself, why me . Why did they pick me . Thats a funny question. Im very grateful. Very, very grateful. But you know, my answer to the other side is, why not me . There were plenty of reasons why not back in the day when he was James Todd Smith growing up in queens, new york his home life wasbulent. When he was 4yearold he saw his father shoot his mother and grandfather in a jealous rage. They both recovered and while his mother worked multiple jobs he was largely raised by his grandparents. You know, my grandfather exposed me to music different cultures. When he was 11 his grandfather gave him a 2,000 turn table set up so he could play dj in the attic. That gift put him on his path. I dont know many grand dads or dads or anybody who is going to drop that kind of money. Yeah, he was willing to dig deep in his pockets and pay that kind of price to keep me in the house and keep me out of trouble. It was the early 1980s rap was in its infancy and young todd wanted in. First he needed a new name. The name. Ll cool j. Ladies love cool james. Where did that come from . Wishful thinkin. I wanted the ladies to love you. Absolutely, couldnt wait. The ladies werent lovin you back then. Not much as i wanted. Then he went after a record deal. Targeting a new label, def jam and its founder rick rubin. You signed with def jam. At 16, how did you manage that . I sent a tape in to rick and called him every single day. Persistent. One day he called me back. My grandmother answered the phone. Came in, couldnt pronounce it. Dick stubin, just anything but rick rubin. I called him back, i was really overwhelmed and overjoyed i felt i had an opportunity. And i made the most of it. I what say so. Whats so funny . Absolutely. Explain it to the rest of us. When youre growing up in queens and you know, you walk in your math class teacher punches you in the back calls you a dummy. Go to your next class teachersou theyre going to read about you as a criminal. When you grow up in that kind of environment, when you get an opportunity you make the most of it its fun and its funny. Its not easy. He sees another opportunity when friend invited him on to the movie krush groove. He hadnt been hired by anybody he was visiting. Im bouncing off the walls. Like, all right grab a broom. Grab some crates. Running and dancing. Go over there. I just did everything i had to do eventually i worked and worked. Box. He somehow got film makers to let him perform. The movie set the stage for his career as rapper and actor. Meanwhile, still a teenager he pioneered a softer side of hip hop with hits like i need love. And then he found love. Todd bought me my first pair of earrings when i was like 17 years old. He met Simone Johnson in his Old Neighborhood. But as their relationship developed it hit some tough times. He wrote in his autobiography about the groupies hanging around his concerts. Seemed the ladies started loving cool j a little too much. Because hes a godfearing man. Thats one of the reasons. I read his autobiography he wasnt always oh, yeah. Always had faith in god. But he laughs about it. Yeah. But i mean, you laugh about it. Thats your past. Your past is your past. Your future is important. Ll and simone got married in 1995 and have four children. Marketing her jewelry is a family affair. Her signature lollipop necklace represents her battle to overcome cancer several years ago. No matter how big you get you should never ever forget where you came from. And ll keeps in touch with his Old Neighborhood in queens, remembering that when he was growing up, there was very little to keep him out of trouble. Stay on that play baby. The last decade he sponsored a basketball tournament during the summer. You know, when you do something for ten years and you have kids that grow, thats up, sweetheart . You have kids thatw up in the program and people grow up doing this thats like most rewarding feeling in the world. At 47, ll cool j is a hit whether hes working with kids or working make some beautiful noise working the grammy stage. Or the concert stage. And James Todd Smiths wish has come true. Because the ladies definitely love cool j. Osgood ahead. Copy that. Hi, tom. Hows the College Visit . Does it make the short list . Yeah, im afraid so. Its okay. This is what weve been planning for. No to title ii. Of all the soldiers at fort bragg, north carolina, no one takes his army commitment more seriously than peter kuch. By all accounts this 36yearold sergeant does every drill tackles every task with the same undying devotion. Ill do my job to the best of my ability until the last day i leave the army. I always remember this is a country that im serving. His love for this country began in whole other world. As one of the lost boys of sudan peter was torn from his parents during the sudanese civil war at the age of eight he and thousands of other children were forced to trek across the desert on their own. Many died along the way. The lucky ones seen in this video from a 2001 6minutes story ended up at refugee camp. And few thousand very lucky ones were event leave allowed to come to the united states. Peter got a job worked his way through college then joined the army as a thank you to america. As for his mom and dad peter never saw them again. I was hoping thats what i would say, i would say god i hope my parents are okay. And i kept that hope and faith for a long time. Until just a few weeks ago when the army gave him leave and a friend bought him a ticket to go back and see them. His mom especially was completely overwhelmed. As soon as she saw me she just collapsed on my hand. Fainted . Yeah. After good three minutes she became back up put her hands on my head started praying before she said anything. She said that i knew all this time that god would bring you back to me. Peter says for the rest of his stay his parents loved on him like a baby. And although he will return to see them, he says he could never go back. America will always be my home regardless. This is my home. Whats amazing to me about you is youre out in the desert for weeks on end you say you didnt cry. Your friends are dying next to you, you didnt cry. You get to talking about america you start crying. Thats the one thing i love this country so much. Sometimes you have to go full circle to see how far. He now has 4yearold boy with more hopes and dreams that he could have ever hoped for dreamt for all here in the country he just cant thank enough. After that hit. Next mann and weil. Osgood my soul andation was a huge hit for the righteous brothers back in 1966, not to mention the songwriters, barry mann and cynthia weil who are being honored by the Recording Academy with a trustees award. All hits, all the time can sum up their career. Rita braver caught up with them at one of their favorite spots. Here we are on broadway it all began. The lights are bright. Theyre right about that. This place has special meaning for barry mann and cynthia weil. They cowrote that famous song right here on broadway. Along with dozens of other hits of the 1960s. Blame it on the bossa nova, bless you, hes so shy hes sure the boy i love. Soul and inspiration. It went so fast . It all started in 1959. He was a fledgling composer is, she an aspiring lyricist when she first set eyes on him. You wanted him for a writing partner . No, i wanted him for another kind of partner even more. Then i found out he was a good writer. They were married in 1961. Cynthia weil, will you marry me . And the hit broadway show beautiful the carole king musical. Chronicles their story, too. Why do you . Because its so good. Me, too. Youre portrayed as both best friends and chief competitors of carol ring and gerry goffin her husband and song writing partner. How realize particular was that . That was the absolute truth. Right on. It was the most conflicting relationship he i think weve ever had with anybody because we loved them, we hated them we were competitive with them, we cheered for them, we cheered for ourselves. Barry and gerry even wrote this unforgettable number together. The show featureed mann and weil classics. Look at you fantastic. It was kind of a Family Reunion when they met up with anika larson and jarrod speck for who played them in the show. You think you dont know who these other characters, created the sound track of your lives. How do you think they do at impersonating you . I always telling anika shes a better me than i ever was. From the beginning cynthia weil and barry mann were fearless. Were you at all intimidated by the idea of that people were going to be singing your songs on the radio if you got one made . No. We deserved everything. We deserved everything. One of their hits has been played on radio and television more than any other song in history. I came up with the opening line. For some reason that kind of got us rolling dont you think . You look very worried. I do. I look very worried that i said that. And you should be. I cant believe you did that. Did you come up with it . I think so. They wrote you lost that lovin feeling in 1964 with phil speck for for his new duo. The righteous brothers. But there was a problem. One of the righteous brothers didnt think he had enough to do. You lost that lovin feeling bobby said, because he only came in on the choruses, do you want to finish it . He said, what am i supposed to do while the big guys singing . Phil said, you can go to the bank. Blame it on the bossa nova. Over the years musical tastes changed, mann and weil adapted. We werent conscious that the sound was changing. We just wrote what came out. We gotta get outta this place. In the 60s the animals sang what became an antivietnam war anthem. In the 70s, they gave dolly parton her first pop music hit. Just once ] and in the 80s they helped james ink gram launch his career with just once. What was it like to be writing hit after hit . Im sorry did i interrupt you darling . Of course not darling, but go ahead. Now i forgot. We just took it for granted. We had to be on the charts. And they were. Their songs have sold an estimated 200 million records. But life was not perfect. There were so many people who were successful and had to get off some kind of substance whether it was alcohol or drugs. Did that ever happen to the two of you . Yeah. Me. I got looked on cocaine. You did . Yeah, i got hooked for awhile. That was in the early 80s. They separated. Mann went in to a deep depression. I never said this before, i was hospitalized for a few months. And i also joined the program at the time. It was the 12step program. The 12step program. Very helpful. Little by little we ended upcoming back together. Mann and weil who have bon daughter rekindled both their marriage and song writing partnership. In 1986 along with composer james horner they wrote the songs for Steven Spielbergs an american tale. Somewhere out there, recorded by Linda Ronstadt and james ink gram, was nominated for an oscar and won two grammys including song of the year. We were up, you know, against real rock and roll stars. Maybe everybody tells well, the old couple theyre in their 40s. Theyre on their way out. In five years ago they made it in to the rock and roll hall of fame. I thought you guys would never ask. But im really glad you did. These days they have more than music to occupy them. Mann is an accomplished photographer. His pictures hang amid all the music awards in their Beverly Hills home. And weil has written young adult novel about making music in the 1960s. Part mystery, part love story. I would describe it as a young girls adventure into song writing, in to the music business and in to adulthood. I dont know much, but i know i love you and the love story of barry mann and cynthia weil seems like the stuff of one of their songs. I mean i can honestly say that i love cynthia more now than ive ever loved her. And thats really all you need to know. Can we get rid of j. Fell out of love with valentines day. Retired from the campaign trail axelrod looking back this morning he shares his thoughts with our jim no relation, axelrod. To understand David Axelrod think less about washington, d. C. And the oval office. This guy is the best corn beef slinger in the world right here. And much more about chicago and mannis delicatessen. Come here to clog my arteries and clear my head. Hackle rod is the political consultant who fashioned yes we can into a radio tore call machete that cleared the path to the white house for a first term senator with just two years under his belt. The conversations you have here are very reflective of what is going on in peoples lives. Hi ised that when i was in washington. I missed the daytoday interaction with people that you can have here on a regular basis. Hes back home now after two years in the white house as senior counselor and then heading up the 2012 reelection campaign, spending time at the institute of politics he founded at his alma mater the university of chicago. Its how you interact in the public spirit and move an agenda forward, move an issue forward. Axelrod has written a book believer a consideration of his 40 years in politics working for democrats from bill clinton to barack obama and plenty of the partys biggest names in between. I realized in writing the book that the people who i was brawn to most drawn to, cared deeply. Speaking down there right in front of that store on the corn are of 20th street. Politics grabbed hackle rod early on the street where he grew up in new york city, mesmerized by john f. Kennedy in 1960. He was five. This whole boulevard that was always filled with traffic was filled with people instead. Did a 5yearold kid have any idea who he was seeing . I had vague idea who i was seeing but was clear to me that this is really important. He was hooked. Starting work as foot soldier in local elections by the time he was ten. His first job out of college was at the Chicago Tribune soon working his way up to covering city politics. I was intrigued by campaigns and politics. I wrote about them with the eye of someone who is interested in strategy. When the opportunity came, i was drawn to it. That opportunity came in 1984 when illinois congressman paul simon needed help with his senate campaign. He liked axelrods style and the feeling was mutual. His pants were always about five inches too short because some constituent bequeathed him six suits and he never got them tailored. He was that kind of guy. I knew he would never be corrupt. I knew that he would never embarrass me and he never did. Axelrod would spend the next 20 years crafting messages for big city mayors, governors and senators. Itching to find a president ial candidate, he signed on with john edwards in 2004 learning an important lesson about the difference between politicians who wanted to do something and those who wanted to be something. I very quickly agreed to go to work for him without really getting to know him getting to know his wife, elizabeth. And we just didnt we didnt groove. Did you feel he was inauthentic . I felt that john was authentically sympathetic to the average working person. I dont think that he was terribly interested in really coming up with solutions. At the same time, i was working for barack obama who was running for the senate, it was striking to me the difference between the two of them. Because barack always wanted to drill three and four levels deep on these things. And he was really moved by, what is the right thing to do. And i felt like john wanted to do what he needed to do to get to the next rung. I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger american story. That i owe a debt to all of those who came before me and that in no other country on earth is my story even possible. Obama would elect trifile the Democratic Convention in 2004 with his keynote address. That was the political equivalent of being shot out of a cannon. I turned to robert gibbs our press secretary said, this guys life just changed forever, maybe ours did too. In a little more than four years, barack obama went from state senator to inauguration platform. Too swift a journey say some critics. Might he have been a more effective president with few more years under his belt to learn how washington works . I think that history will say that he was the right man at the right time, because there were series of decisions that had to be made when he became president that required you to suspend the normal rules of washington. I think to the auto worker whose got a job today because president intervened to save the Auto Industry to, someone who has health care today because he was willing to take the chance to do health reform. To families, military families with have their loved ones home instead of overseas because we dont have 180,000 troops overseas today thats pretty big change thats good progress. While axelrod hasnt lost a step advocate for the president , its clear the man behind the message thinks at times the boss could have done a better job delivering it. I think one of the weaknesses has been that he doesnt apply the same campaign skills to governing, the same driving of a message relentlessly. I believe that you cant dismiss politics from governing. His inner circle yourself included, fail him by not making sure that he understood, you cant just govern. Well, i think his failures, any failures of his are failures of ours as well. I can only tell you that we had that kind of philosophical strategic discussion many times. Were you right or was he right . I think im right about it. I think that you have to have a kind of continuing commitment to an ongoing message that is palpable, that people feel. David axelrod is now taking stock and just of the public part of his life. 35 years ago his wife susan had thought she was marrying a reporter who would be home most nights. When he said to you im not going to be a newspaper man i want to go work in politics. Were you thinking, okay, that makes sense thats a good idea . You know i actually did and had i think known really what being in politics would be like, i might not have been quite as supportive. But i was sort of blissfully naive. Instead his allconsuming passion left her a Campaign Widow for months at a time. Often alien with three kids, including a daughter with debilitating epilepsy. My family made huge sacrifices for my success in ways that i would look back at, not just with gratitude but a little bit of shame. Thats a hard thing to come to grips with. Like many couples who wrestled with the balance between life careers and marriage they punched through. Belief, it appears runs a few Different Directions in David Axelrods life. I have sort of an undying confidence and faith in his strengths and ability to really affect change in the world. That is a sacrifice for us personally but i do believe in him, i probably never said that personally. Should do this more often. Yeah. How much do you charge an hour . Its been a hell of a ride. Soon to be 60, David Axelrod is happy to be home and sounding very much like a man whos all done with p p president ial politics. If Hillary Clinton or joe biden picks up the zone and says i need you what is the answer going to be . Happy to give you any advice you want but im not going back on that circuit. Its exhilarating, its addictive, but its also not good for you. Youre done . Im done. Osgood story from jim axelrod.
