Cold system is gripping much of the country. Dangerously cold temperatures, snow, and ice have prompted windchill warnings from montana all the way to blame. An emergency order has been issued for indiana making it illegal to drive except for emergencies. The temperature there today could reach 39 below zero. More than 1,000 flights were canceled in the midwest yesterday. Today more than 2,000 flights have been canceled nationwide. On sunday a plane that landed at new yorks Kennedy Airport slid into snow as it was taxiing. No one was injured but the airport was temporarily closed because of icy runways. And last night the temperature in minot, north dakota, was minus 20 degrees. This morning its expected to be even colder with the windchill reaching minus 60. A fire in a new york city highrise killed one man and badly injured another sunday. Blaze broke out on the 20th floor of the 42ndstory apartment building. It looked like something out of a movie. Some people were jumping out of a burning building. Others were driving were climbing down ladders to avoid flames. Flames tore through harvey hall apartments. Fire crews believe a home oxygen system helped the fire spread so quickly. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. A water main break in southeast washington late yesterday affected ten homes near southern avenue and benning road. The 12inch main ruptured early sunday morning. D. C. Water crews remained on the scene overnight making repairs. Officials believe the roads will be back to normal for the commute this morning. 13yearold jahi mcmath is out of a california hospital but the family is not saying where she is going. Mcmath is the girl that family members were fighting to keep on life support after she was declared brain dead after a botched operation. Hospital spokesperson says the girl was released to the coroner. The coroner then released mcmath to her mother. The judge said on friday the mother may remove the girl from the hospital if she assumes full responsibility for the consequences. The wicked winter storm barreling through the midwest and northeast brought with it bitter cold temperatures and dangerous driving conditions leading to accidents and leaving some drivers stranded. In indiana with not enough help to go around, state officials called in the National Guard not only to be a second set of eyes but an extra set of helping hands. Dustin grove has more.
