looks like wet weather. it's all going to be about the rain fall. look at this potential rainfall map. this will take us into saturday afternoon. we're talking a wide swath of at much as 2 to 5 inches of rain all the way to new england. some areas could see higher amounts. because of that, we have a number of flood watches currently in effect, specifically across the i-95 corridor. these will be in effect all day and through the nighttime hours 678 that's where we're expecting the heaviest rain. looking at the national forecast, spotty showers throughout the day, heaviest in south florida. the worst will be what's left of andrea. heavy rain at times across all of the i-95 corridor, d.c., philadelph philadelphia, and boston is going to be fairly heavy rain. and, again, there could be some of localized flooding. i'm david bernard, cbs news, miami. folks hit hard by superstorm sandy are keeping an eye on andrea. susan mcginnis is on the island of long beach just near south shore. susan, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. now we know that this tropical storm will start to weaken as it moves up the i-95 corridor, and that is good news for folks in areas like this one, still recovering from sandy. the cleanup has already begun in florida after tropical storm andrea came ashore thursday. the storm spawned several tornadoes. the gonzalez family was holed up in their palm beach county home as a twister moved through their yard. >> you could hear stuff hitting the house. >> reporter: the sunshine state has damage stretching from the gulf coast to the atlantic. and now as andrea moves up into georgia, the carolinas, and virginia, the real threat is flooding. flood watches are are in effect from central virginia up the i-95 corridor into connecticut. andrea is still a day away from impacting long island, but this is the first big storm to hit the area since superstorm andy, and many residents are taking precautions. >> i'm going to batten down the hatches, get stuff off the floor in the basement just in case. >> reporter: evonne lives on arizona street here in new york. here construction is an every day reminder of the storm that took so much last year. evonne says hearing about more bad weather. her neighbor lisa augustine laughs off the threat of andrea. >> rain. it's just rain, no storm. >> reporter: augustine moved into her home about a week ago and she wouldn't have live anywhere else. the new york area has actually implemented a flash flood plan and a hazardous travel advisory. >> i see the rain coming down. susan mcginnis in long beach. thank you, susan. this morning we're learning more about the federal government's secret surveillance records. it's not only involving phone records but internet records as well. washington agents are looking at the central computer servers of nine internet companies. the company looks at audio, video, i'm, and other documents and other logs to connect movements and contacts. before we learned about prism, we learned that they ordered the communications verizy iizon to over records of millions of customers. as far as the disclosure of the phone records program, clapper said it threatens potentially long lasting and irreversible harm to our ability to respond to the many threats facing the nation. major garrett has more. >> reporter: the national security agency operating under secret court aorders to thwart terror calls was authorized to track calls of millions of americans, even those not tied to investigation and track the duration of the calls but the obama administration insists id did not listen to the conversations or record the names of the callers. >> they look at the terrorists' phone numbers overseas and they run those against this big data and what they learn is how many numbers in the united states are talking to terrorists over seas. counterterrorism experts told us this surveillance is ongoing and involves most major telephone companies, not just verizon. some law firms such as wisconsin lawmaker james senn senn brener who wrote many of the moves criticizes it. >> it's an abuse overreach. >> reporter: but a majority of the republicans and >> i'm great. >> is it tough for you to say andrea? >> my mother is happy it's not me causing problems along the east coast. >> we're so used to saying your name your way. >> but andrea is causing problems in the form of rain. a little wind here and there, especially along the coast. this is a rain maker, prolific rain maker. some areas to our west had as much as 3 inches of rain. more rain coming. want to start with power outages due to a cape being cut -- cable being cut underground. northern dominion,. high mid- 70s. the rain will be heavy at times. wind east to northeast 10 to 20. could see flooding in the coastal areas. want to take you to florida. yesterday we were talking about andrea coming ashore. and andrea did a little damage. there were a few tornadoes here and there. the biggest problems with andrea of course were the heavy rains and a little bit of on shore flooding ha it has caused from all -- that it has caused from all of the rain. we'll show you the map. we have a flood watch in effect. blue ridge east. doesn't include frederick county but everybody in a flood watch for today till about 10:00 tonight. we're talking to one to maybe as much as 4 inches of rain possible. some might get 5-plus out of this before we get into the midnight hour as the rain has been streaming over us since last night. heaviest stuff has moved north and east. i want to take you south and show you what's coming for today. we'll go down in north carolina with the surge coming up from wilmington headed for raleigh- durham. farther south we have the center of andrea with winds at 45 miles an hour. you can see it here. remember the other day everything was on the east side. look at all the rain on the west side of the storm. that's why even though it's going to track to our east, we're still expecting several inches of rain, potentially flooding rain in spots. temperatures low to mid-60s north and west. 70s on the bay here in town. we vupper 60s in cape -- we have upper 60s in cambridge but a yellow alert day with rain heavy at times. that is going to cause problems for commuters both this morning and this afternoon. >> we have flooding problems and we have police activity as well affecting your drive on a major thoroughfare this morning. claire barton parkway is shut down at the chain bridge. you can't access the chain bridge as well. that means you're going to have to choose your alternate routes. i believe you have plenty of them to choose from. the gw parkway, mcarthur boulevard, river road even as your alternate routes and glebe road if you're traveling over in virginia as well. remember, police activity clara barton parkway at the chain bridge. that's been ongoing since about 2:00 this morning. let's take a live look outside on 270. this seems to be fairing okay but of course with the wet road conditions, you absolutely want to give yourself extra time this morning and keep your distance from the car in front of you. let's go to virginia where we have flooding problems down on the beltway. two right lanes are blocked on the outer loop at the eisenhower connector. you want to watch out and stay to the left to get by. we'll take a live look in springfield. a little hard to see through the darkness but again wet road conditions and flooding closing wood burn road at spicewood drive in annandale. back to you. >> thanks, monika. and yarks the first named storm of what properly -- andrea, the first named storm of what promises to an active season has hit the east coast. >> tropical storm warnings stretched from florida to the chesapeake bay and the entire length of this storm is huge. it goes all the way north to new york and new england where people are still recovering from hurricane sandy. susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: the cleanup has already begun in florida after tropical storm andrea came ashore thursday. the storm spawned several tornadoes. the gonzalez family was holed up in
