Tonight the tail end of a powerful noreaster is whipping northern new england. This is portland, maine, where the snow is coming down and the streets are we deserted. The storm dumped as much as 2. 5 feet of snow in places, but which places became an issue today. Predictions that the new york city area would see an historic blizzard and paralyzing snowfall did not pan out. As the storm shifted overnight, long island, east of the city and massachusetts took the beating. We have a series of reports tonight beginning with anna werner who joins us in boston. Anna . Reporter scott, the snow is still coming down here. As you can tell from this big pile of snow behind me, the snowplows are still working overtime trying to keep the streets clear. Now, the city of boston had more than 26 inches of snow. Outlying areas saw more than 31 inches of snow from this major storm. Hurricaneforce winds up to 76mph created dangerous whiteout conditions in many cities across massachusetts. This timelapse video showed the buildup in boston as snow fell at a rate of 2 to 4 inches per hour. 30 miles to the southeast in the coastal town of scituate, a storm surge flooded the streets damaging cars and homes. The National Guard had to rescue a 50yearold man after a wave knocked down his door and filled his home with seven feet of water. Further south in marshfield, a dozen homeowners had to evacuate after an 80foot section of sea wall was washed away. And the island of nantucket was virtually cut off as some 12,000 residents lost both power and phone service. Blizzard conditions in portland maine, didnt stop truck driver Matthew Richardson from making a flu deliveries early this morning despite 20 inches of snow, but after visibility worsened. Its time. Its time to head home. Reporter the travel ban in boston kept the streets free of cars,. [horn honks] so snowplows and emergency vehicles could get through. Jack foran has been plowing this same two and a half mile stretch over and over since 8 00 a. M. Yesterday. These streets look like theyre still full of snow. Why is that . Weve been going up and down. Look how fast its coming down. The snow is so light. The wind is heavy. The wind keeps blowing the snow back in the streets. Reporter but with the city and businesses all but shut down. Susan miranian made the most of this snow day. Ive been waiting to use my Cross Country skis. How often can you walk out on beacon street. The governor announced a short time ago the travel ban will be lifted as of midnight and Public Transportation will be become on and Logan Airport will reopen in the morning. Pelley anna, thanks. Now the Eastern Suburbs of new york city where the snow totals where as high as 28 inches. Don dahler is on long island. Don . Reporter scott those who live on eastern long island endured an intense night of blizzardlike conditions. Some areas got two feet of snow and nearhurricaneforce winds. People around the town of islip spent the better part of the day clearing roads and sidewalks and digging out cars buried under 15 inches of snow. The travel ban was lifted midday, but major highways remained virtually empty, save for armies of snowplows. Even by late afternoon, businesses remained closed and some roads were inaccessible. Those who ventured on to them had to be rescued by good samaritans. Scott, a travel ban was imposed yesterday in part because of what happened in 2013 when a blizzard stranded hundreds of drivers on the long island expressway. Pelley don, thank you. Forecasters had put out blizzard warnings that stretched from southern new jersey through new england, including new york city. Fearing the worst, the city of 8 million outlawed driving, shuttered schools and for the first time because of snow closed its 110yearold subway. Manhattan looked deserted, but the blizzard never came. Heres jim axelrod. Reporter just two days ago new york city mayor bill de blasio was talking doomsday. We are facing most likely one of the largest snowstorms in the history of this city, in the recorded history of this city. Reporter but the forecast turned out to be only half right. The storm developed 90 miles east of the expected track. New england and long island got nailed, but for manhattan and points south, no big deal. The National Weather service forecaster who predicted a crippling storm that never came for some 10 Million People tweeted a meteorological mea culpa. My deepest apologies to many key decisionmakers and so many members of the general public, wrote gary szatkowski, but dr. Marshall shepherd, past president of the American Meteorological Society says no apology necessary. I think the forecasts were actually quite correct if you take the northeast as a whole. This is an historic storm for places like boston and massachusetts. Were talking upwards of 30 inches of snow in those places. Now, new york, different story but i think the key to note there is that the models were always a bit uncertain in that area. In situations like this, you cant be a monday morning quarterback on Something Like the weather. Reporter fresh in deboers de blasios mind, just ten days before when forecasters underprayed the threat of an ice storm in the northeast. That system sent trucks jackknifing on the new jersey turnpike. Nine people died in accidents. National Weather ServiceSuper Computers are now being upgraded and will be ten times as powerful by october but shepherd says the key for forecasters and Public Officials is conveying uncertainty. We do a nice job of it with hurricanes. You know that cone of uncertainty you sew when a hurricane is making landfall. Thats conveying there is uncertainty on either side of that hurricane track . Do we need Something Like that for noreasters in that will be a discussion point. Reporter keep this in mind as far as the forecasters go, that weather man who tweeted out the apology, during sandy he was widely seen as a hero, credited with being first to sound the alarm that sandy was headed right at the jersey shore even when most other models had it drifting out to sea. Pelley jim axelrod in manhattan for us tonight. Jim, thanks. By tomorrow the airlines will have canceled more than 8100 flights.
