This morning. A Police Spokesperson tells me this information was not brought up in this mornings News Conference because police were working to confirm whether the woman was in the cruiser with him, which they have since done. The police chief says this morning no other officers were in the cruiser with officer raban when he lost control of his cruiser. Weve learned of the second person from a witness. I said oh, my god, something is wrong. I ran out and there was we run down and, you know, and then know what happened. [ indiscernible ] we had an opportunity to pull the incar camera information. Were interviewing people as we speak to find out if that in facts what was happening. But what i can tell you is in the 9500 block, he lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway. Im being told from police that the officer was offduty with the woman in the car. Once he began to pursue the traffic stop, thats when he became on duty. There is a question of policy violation here. Were working to confirm this, who this woman is, and police say they are also still investigating speed and weather as possible factors as well. Bruce, officer raban had less than two years on the force. Were told he has a 3yearold daughter he leaves behind, as well as possibly another parent, a significant other. Significant loss to the community here. Sympathies to his family. This woman in the car, she was not a Police Officer . Not a Police Officer, thats what the chief said this morning. Was she injured . The spokesperson believes she is not seriously injured. Were still working to investigate, though, what happened here. It seems apparent that the chief and others didnt know that this woman was in the car. So can we assume this was an unauthorized visit or whatever . Thats what were still trying to find out. All right, stephanie, thanks a lot. Appreciate it. Elsewhere, a pedestrian is struck and killed in Montgomery Village early this morning. Montgomery county police say the driver who struck him may have been drinking. Police say 35yearold osmond korea was struck. Police located the alleged driver. 18yearold helen ramos was taken into custody, given a breathalyzer test. Police are awaiting the results of the test tonight. Well, the melting snow is revealing a lot of potholes everywhere. Surae chinn joins us live from georgetown right now. Reporter well, bruce, our cars are really taking a beating. On wednesday, we got up to 51 degrees. Seems like a distant memory, because then on thursday, our High Temperature around midnight of 45, temperatures plummeted as we went through the day and of course the snow started to pile up. Our average high this time of year is 53 degrees. We got close today, with a high of 48 degrees. But tomorrow, well get there for much of the entire metro area, seeing temperatures reaching into the 50s. Today with that high of 48, it was a tough climb. Look at the low temperatures we had this morning, down into the Single Digits for most of the suburbs outside the beltway. Matter of fact, Dulles Airport at 2. Martinsburg at 3. Bwi at 6 degrees. Those are all new record low temperatures. We keep coming up with these new record lows. But it does look like spring is around the corner. One of the great signs of spring, of course, when Daylight Saving time begins. We can turn the clocks ahead. Unfortunately we lose that hour of sleep, but were kind of gaining an hour of daylight at the end of the day. From now on, sun sets after 7 00, so its going to feel nicer. Food carts are nothing new to downtown washington, but when one caught fire today near 1600 pennsylvania avenue, it caused the secret service to put the entire white house on lockdown for a short period. Secret Service Agents heard a loud noise near the north lawn of the white house today. It happened just as president obama and the first family were preparing to head to selma, alabama. Once the source of the loud noise was determined, the lockdown was lifted and the first family was allowed to leave the white house. Still ahead on wusa 9 this saturday, a third Oil Train Derailment in ontario in less than a month. And president obama paying tribute to the selma. Today, america marked the turning point in the civil rights movement. It was 50 years ago that Police Attacked a group of peaceful marchers, simply trying to make their way from selma to montgomery, alabama. The day is now remembered as bloody sunday. Marlie hall is in selma, where president obama joined the commemoration today. Reporter president obama and his family retraced the historic walk across selmas Edmond Pettis bridge. 50 years ago, this is where police used brutal force to stop a march for Voting Rights. The violence of bloody sunday became a turning point for the nation. It was not a clash of armies, but a clash of wills. A contest to determine the true meaning of america. Reporter former president george bush attended the Anniversary Event with about 100 members of congress. While paying tribute to selmas heroes, president obama said the exposure of racial bias in ferguson, missouri shows more work is needed. We just need to open our eyes and our ears and our hearts to know that this nations racial history still casts its long shadow upon us. Reporter along with the official delegation, thousands packed into selma for the commemoration. Among them, some of the original marchers, who saw the violence firsthand. Reverend Frederick Reece was the activist who asked dr. Martin luther king, jr. To join the selma movement. On their third attempt, they reached the capitol in montgomery to demand Voting Rights. It was a great feeling of triumph and victory. After having gone through all the indignities, sacrifices that had been made by many people. Tomorrow, sunday, civil rights veterans will lead a symbolic walk across the Edmond Pettis bridge. In canada, a Freight Train carrying crude oil derailed, sparking a large fire. Its the third Oil Train Derailment in North Ontario region in less than a month. No one was hurt today, but several train cars caught fire and Health Warnings had to be issued to nearby residents because of the thick, black smoke. Former Vice President Walter Mondale has been released from a minnesota hospital. At 87 years of age, mondale was being treated for flu and cold symptoms at the mayo clinic in minneapolis. He had been scheduled to introduce former president jimmy carter at a Nobel Peace Prize forum on friday. Mondale served as carters Vice President from 1977 through 1981. Tomorrow at this time, i will be showing you a shot with daylight, but we havent hit Daylight Saving time yet. Its 47 degrees right now, winds out of the South Southwest at 14 miles per hour. Nice dry atmosphere with that dewpoint down in the 20s. In our weather headlines, well see temperatures dipping below freezing for many tonight. Its not going to be even close to as cold as it was last night. We had Single Digits last night. That will not be the case. Just about everyone in the 20s overnight tonight. And then on sunday, its still going to be dry, of course, a little milder. As i mentioned before, reaching into the 50s. Our seasonal average High Temperature, well be close to that for the next couple of days. As i just mentioned, make sure you set the clock ahead so you dont end up showing up for church late or anything else that you want to do tomorrow. Right now, it is 45 degrees in frederick, leesburg. 44 at andrews. Lot of places around the same temperature at the moment. On satellite and radar, you can see showers north of the mason dixon line, maybe a couple sprinkles in cumberland and hagerstown through the early evening hours, but not an issue for us heading forward. Youll see that here on 9 future cast. No precipitation showing up on the map during the overnight hours and into sunday morning. In fact, the breezes are going to pick up after the pocket of energy moves through. Breezes are going to provide whats called downsloping, when you get the energy off the mountains. Thats going to help get temperatures a little milder on sunday. That milder air is going to stay put on monday. Tuesday, were watching an approaching system. That will bring us showers for the afternoon and evening on tuesday, but just rain showers. Temperatures are still going to be too mild to get any wintry weather. Thank goodness, looks like a solid break from the snow. Maybe were done with it all together. I wouldnt put any money on that, though. Partly cloudy to mostly clear. 25 to 34 tonight. Really not bad with southwest winds settling down 5 to 10 miles per hour. But then they pick up, becoming westnorthwesterly tomorrow morning. Temperatures between 25 and 40. More sun than cloud cover in the morning. Then in the afternoon, a little bit more cloud cover develops. High temperatures between 48 and 52 degrees, so its a seasonable day. We should be getting up to 53, and well be right around there for the next couple of days. On tuesday, a little milder, 54. It comes at a price. Well see showers in the afternoon and early evening. Then in the first ladder seven day forecast, best day of the week is wednesday. High of 60 good amount of sunshine. Temperatures slide back down to around 50 by the time we get to friday. There are some model indications we could see wet snowflakes on friday. Im not buying into that just yet, but i wanted to let you know, its a possibility. The weekend event at the Dc Convention center, really the Washington Convention center, features more than 200 exhibits on vacation spots, travel deals, presentations on travel destinations across the globe. Organizers say its the largest travel show in the entire country. More than 20,000 people are expected to attend this years event. If you didnt get there today, dont worry about it.
