Hello, and thank you for joining us. Im andrea rose. Im nick rose. The chaotic morning at the navy yard tops our news this noon. A the allclear has been given. Someone reported hearing shots fired this morning. We have Live Team Coverage of how it all unfolded. Well start with nikki burdine. Reporter i can tell you right now there is a huge sense of relief here at the navy yard. But when we first heard about this, we all feared the worst. First responders were prepared for the worst. Thats why their response here, it was quick and it was massive. But thankfully in the end, the allclear was given. I want to give you a quick rundown of what took place this morning. At 7 30, an official at the navy yard called 911, reporting the sound of gunshots. All buildings went on lockdown. Floors were evacuated one by one. Law enforcement went through every part of the building, searching for anything suspicious. In the end, no shooter was found, no weapons, no injuries. They say the employee heard a loud noise and that scared her. The allclear was given at about 10 00. Now, as far as the person who report hearing shots fired, the chief lanier says they will not release the name to protect privacy, but can confirm this is not a hoax and the woman did exactly what she was supposed to do. Its not clear if she was here during the 2013 mass shooting when a lone gunman opened fire in building 197, killing 12 people. But the scene is clearly reminiscent of that. Chief lanier said today this turned out to be a great exercise. It appears all the things that we tried to correct and make go better from the last incident went very, very well, a smooth, wellcoordinated response here, and very happy that this turns out to be a great exercise for us to see if we fixed what we wanted to fix and nobody is hurt and no evidence of any shots fired. Reporter i can tell you as far as what that employee heard or thought she may have heard, thats still not clear, but there is quite a bit of consuction around here. Police wont confirm if thats what she heard, but it is very loud around here. In fact, the time weve been standing out here, ive heard several loud booms and drops that easily could have been mistaken. Again, police say the allclear has been given out here. A sense of relief out the navy yard. Well keep you updated on anything else we hear. Live in the navy yard, nikki burdine. Back to you in the studio. Thank you. Nervous workers off m street who never made it into their offices or who were quickly hustled out were reminded of the mass shooting at the navy yard in 2013. Lot of talk about Lessons Learned from that tragedy, when a lone gunman, a government contractor, shot and killed 12 workers. Lets continue our Team Coverage of todays scare with mike hydeck. Mike . Reporter guys, what started as a normal workday at the navy yard quickly turned very, very frightening. Reports this morning of an active shooter situation on the campus brought back the fears from 2013 when 12 innocent people were shot. The shooter was also eventually killed as well, and that fear came flooding back. Armed police came in to evacuate building 197, asking people to get out quickly and safely. And for a long time afterwards, all they could do was stand on street corners, looking at their phones, waiting to try to get the allclear, as police cars blocked off dozens and dozens of streets in the area, all they could do is reflect on what they had been through. Run the gamut of im done to, you know, just disbelief that it could happen again. Got my backpack and had to travel all the way back and on my way back in, i heard a bunch of navy yard being shut down. Im waiting to get back in now. Reporter now, despite being inconvenienced, the people we talked to say they were very thankful for that massive response this morning. In essence, we witnessed a see something Say Something moment and it worked. Live, mike hydeck, wusa 9. Back to you. That response was prompt and profound, as we saw here. Our reporters were there two years ago and there today, watching the entire incident and the response. Julia . Reporter a very different scene on the intersection of 4th and m. As we reported earlier, this intersection once dominated by armed police, now clear and back to normal. You can see traffic has now resumed. Workers are out getting their lunch, families walking in the area. We talked to a lot of folks here in the navy yard who say theres a different kind of normal here ever since the 2013 shooting. Folks have been on edge, and we saw some of that, especially from the Police Presence when officers at one point during the three and a halfhour incident here at the navy yard, bolted over to 300 m street after hearing reports of suspicious activity there only to find that it was a Maintenance Worker who was on the roof. I talked to two women who work in 300 m street. Thats a dc government building. Heres what they had to say about the response by police and the aftermath. It was probably the fastest ive ever seen. Yeah. Were on the second floor in our building and we had probably 70 cop cars, it seemed, go by at one time. It was like, whats happening, you know . Yeah. Reporter now, we also spoke to father andrew royals. He is from st. Vincents church over on the corner of south capital and m street. He said he will continue to pray for the family and loved ones of the 2013 incident. Those who were afflicted by the memory just today, who really that is sensitive, bringing back memories. He is continuing to pray for them and is having a mass at his church for them. The woman we also talked to said she is relieved, but still on edge, still shaken up because this brought back so many bad memories for everyone. Back to you in the studio. Well see what else he has up his sleeves. It debuts september 8 on cbs. Plenty of rain in the forecast today. Lets check in with erica grow. We already had almost an inch of rain in the immediate metro area. That stream of showers moved across for the morning commute and even heavier rain in Southern Maryland. As we head into the afternoon, peeks of sunshine are actually a bad thing because we have so much lingering moisture. That will allow clouds to bubble up and produce another round of showers and thunderstorms. Not everyones going to see rain as we head toward that evening drive, but keep in mind that you might need the umbrella or might need the windshield wipers. 82 degrees at 3 00. Well reach 84 at 4 00, then down to 81 by 6 00, maybe a lingering shower heading into the early evening. 74 right now. That cloud cover is helping to keep temperatures down. Winds helping to keep temperatures in check. Right now, it is only 72 in frederick. 71 in martinsburg. But those few peeks of sunshine well get as morning showers push away, that will pop temperatures very quickly. Were at that time of year where we have very strong sunshine. I wanted to show you on the wide view of satellite and radar the couple features were watching. There is a deep trough in the upper atmosphere. Thats keeping things really nice and dry in the great lakes. Not the case along the periphery of that. This is the system were watching to potentially move through on friday into saturday. But the heavier rain to our south, luckily well miss out on that. But since we do have that little area of low pressure close by, that will be enough to spark a few showers and thunderstorms over the next couple of days. Youll see that here on 9 future cast. We had that other round of showers potentially bubbling up as we head into the evening drive. Then saturday, or friday, i should say, we start out dry, but then another little cluster of showers could develop just in time for that evening commute or that evening drive to the beach. Saturday morning, 9 future cast showing the showers here, maybe even pockets of heavier rain. I think 9 future cast is overdoing that threat for the morning on saturday. The good news, though, all the model data shows us drying out as we head into saturday evening and the fireworks displays should be in good shape in the immediate metro area. Today, well reach a high of 83 in leesburg, 82 in manassas, 81 at andrews, and 84 in downtown washington. Were only going to dip into the 60s overnight tonight in the suburbs and 70 in downtown washington. The clouds starting to break up a little bit as we head into the evening. Well reach a high of 80 degrees tomorrow. Thats it. Well see temperatures really capped off by that east wind and the potential for showers, but starting to get better as we head into fourth of july with a high of 85 and isolated storm possible. First ladder sevenday forecast starts to dry things out by sunday and we will have a dry start to the work week. Stay with us. Well be right back. Nikki burdine has more. Recapping our top story, a wild morning at the Washington Navy yard, after reports of shots fired. First responders rushed to the scene to take no chances. The navy yard remained on lockdown for hours until the fbi gave the allclear. We watched as multiple agencies responded, both at the federal and local level.
