In todays family health, we are talking about strokes. Do you know the signs and what to do first if someone you know could be having a stroke . Dr. Jack cochran, rice chair of the department of neur vice clare of the department of neuro science from inova, thanks for joining us. What are the risk factors for stroke . One of the biggest risk factors is a prior stroke. So you want to prevent that first stroke. Other risk factors are high Blood Pressure, and diabetes, and cigarette smoking, and inactivity and sleep apnea and all of the cardiovascular risk factors. How can you tell if someone is having a stroke . I think i read once the acronym to help you. The acronym is fast. F is for fa face. A, is for arm. Hold the arms out and one will drift down. And s is speech. The speech is garbled like someone drunk and trouble getting the words out. And then t is for time. Time is brain. Delaying treatment, the delaying of going to the hospital, hoping it will go away, it is a big mistake. Have you strokelike symptoms, you want to call 911. So after you have had a stroke, what changes can you make in your life to try to prevent another . Well, probably the number one thing is if you have high Blood Pressure, have your Blood Pressure perfect, you want to own your Blood Pressure and know it. And if you have high cholesterol, and even if you dont actually, anyone who has had a stroke or a heart attack should be on a statin which lowers the cholesterol and can reduce the frequency of a followup repeat stroke. Usually people would be on aspirin, people who dont exercise, should exercise. And just walking 20 minutes, three times a week, makes a significant difference. People already exercising should exercise some more. If you are put on a statin, we have had some about those recently, are there side effects . There are concerns about those . Sure, a lot of people complain of side effects. And you can work with those. You can try changing the dose. I would try a different statin. Some people take the dietary supplement coq10 which can counteract side effects and it is worthwhile working with it because it makes a significant difference in the likelihood of having a second stroke or for that matter heart attack. There are new injectables once a month that are quite expensive that work apparently as well or better than statins. And being completely different dont have the same side effect profiles. Some great information, dr. Jack cochran from inova thank you for your time today. Hope you have a great day. Thank you. In other health news now, women who develop gestational diabetes are at risk for high Blood Pressure later in life. Just a reminder we have you covered when bad weather hits our region with the wusa 9 app. And find live radar, breaking news alert, get the app it is free for apple and android devices. No worries weatherwise what a spectacular couple of days we have had. That is because we have had the setup that blocked the low pressure from moving anywhere and while we sit here with High Pressure and sunshine for five day, they get rain and bad weather for five days. So it is an ununfortunate scenario. However, we are getting the better end of this deal. Now, lets take a look outside. I was outside for the past 20 minutes. And hang out and enjoy the warm weather and thats exactly what i did. It is so nice out there. And temperatures are going to climb into the 80s. Just like it did yesterday. Take a look, here it is breezy and still warm today, well above average. And usually we are upper 60s today. And near 70 range. And tomorrow, we are going to cool off, but only to that near 70 range. And it is not very humid out there. So it has been very dry as of late. And we have a pretty strong wind. Fire danger is well elevated today. So take that into account. And winds are out of the north northwest and turn a little bit northeasterly, later on, and gusting up to near 20, 25 miles per hour. We are into the upper 70s and into the low 80s, and it is going to be a warm day ahead of this front. Now, clouds are going to move in, the front that is coming on through today, not much to speak of, we are not looking at any rain, maybe through the mountains and dry and cloudy and just a little breezy. And the better chance for showers, it does finally arrive, on friday. So this is what all of the rg for. But it doesnt look like a big washout. I think we will see a couple of showers and maybe even a rumble of thunder come friday afternoon. And evening. Tomorrow, the sun is back. And it is going to be a gorgeous day tomorrow. A little bit cooler for the afternoon, but thats okay. And as we head through thursday, 5 30, we actually start off with some sunshine, on thursday, and back to the low 70s, starting thursday afternoon. And here comes the cloud cover, and lining up with some showers on the other side of the mountains by 5 30. And later on at night, after the sun sets, areas in the western county, might see a little bit of rain thursday night and into friday. And for everybody, the main chance for showers, it does arrive on friday. So watch what happens, come friday morning, it seems to fall apart. However, once the actual front comes on through, we will kick things up a little bit. And we could see some showers and thunderstorms pop up just in time for the game. We will watch it closely. Once the front is out of here, it is out of here. And saturday and sunday are looking great. 82 degrees today. 70 for tomorrow. 73 for thursday. A little cloudy but still warm. Cl i afternoon.
