Reporter yeah, mike. Perhaps the biggest safety recommendation, the safety action that metro is taking has to do with the ability of the train operator simply to cut off the vents that bring in outside air into the train. Now action a week ago monday when the train operator hit heavy smoke from an arcing electric fire near the tunnel at lenfant, he had to call the control center for permission to cut off the events that were bringing that smoke from the tunnel into the train leaving hundreds of people gasping for air. Metro has now rewritten its standard operating procedures. So now the minute the train stops, any train stops for smoke, the operator is instructed to shut off the air intake. Metro has also worked with d. C. Fire and adjusted the configuration where metros antennas intersect with d. C. Fire system. Metro says firefighters radios now work inside the tunnel at lenfant and throughout the system. The ntsb says it did see some issues when it tried to check the ventilation fans that should have blown all that smoke out of the tunnel at lenfant and metro says it is now inspecting and adjusting several hundred fans and ventilation shafts throughout the system. Metro is also trying to figure out if it needs to harden up the jumper cables that jump from one section of the third rail to the next. That is where a short led to that arcing fire that caused all the smoke. The ntsb says if there are any other sur jents safety issues, urgent safety issues, it will issue urgent safety measures. If you find any issues that need to be addressed immediately, will you issue recommendations . Most definitely, as we did in fort totten. There were several issues we found that needed immediate attention. Reporter at this point you have not found anything that requires immediate attention . Not yet. Thats day by day. That could change each day. Reporter one other big promise from metro, quarterly drills with each jurisdiction on this kind of emergency to make sure that if it ever happens again, they will be ready to get people out before anyone gets killed. Severance is charged in the fatal shootings of three prominent alexandria residents. A doctor who examined him found that severance didnt completely understand the charges against him. A National Response team from the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives is now heading to annapolis to investigate this weeks deadly mansion fire there.
