The late Rosemary Williams was a wonderful advocate for women. Her advocacy was regarding equal access to quality care for underserved women and underinsured women. She did work with all sorts of cancers, Breast Cancer among them. Absolutely. One of the things she was able to kick start but needs to kin, fundraisers, treatment. Theres been a lot of research over the years. As we know theres still a racial disparity. Black women are more likely to end up with Breast Cancer or not have an initial treatment more so than other races. Why is that and how do we fix it . There are a number of reasons. We have a number of opportunities from a genetic standpoint. So with genetic testing, one in three women at Howard University meet criteria for genetic testing. That means being diagnosed with cancer at a younger age or having family members with cancer. Thats subjective of it possibly being hereditary. A lot of members of our community have not heard of genetic testing or received it. Its covered by insurance but there are those who are uninsured or underinsured who may not have access to the testing portion.
