Not crazy heavy but moderate rain around potomac and also another little moderate rain around 97 on george avenue. But by and large this is the monster right now. Its drifting off to the east. Still heavy rain in between dc and baltimore and laurel is getting hammered right now. Everything pushing off to the south and the east away from the immediate metro area. That suspect charged with killing a rockville couple will not be getting a bond and extradition hearing until tomorrow afternoon. The suspect was connected to those murders and other area burglaries all thanks to a tip from a retired cop. Stephanie ramirez spoke with that cop who said he just hopes others would do the same thing. Reporter remembering that 17yearold case where dick and jodie vallartos home was burglarized and almost burned down. It had been set on fire in a way that didnt seem to me to be to simply cover up a burglary. It seemed to me to be for the purpose of destroying the property. Reporter Montgomery County sergeant bill price tells me he saw that same emotional component last week when the news reported the couple murdered, their home burglarized. Price said he covered the 17yearold burglary and worked in the area for five years. He had to call in. The retired sergeant didnt know his tip led police to connect scott tomazuski until the news conference. Having seen so much negativity about the Police Profession it was heartwarming to know i could contribute to something. Reporter he hopes this will bring some sense of relief to the family and people involved, including neighbors. One of the neighbors said today i cant offer anything but condolences. They were very pleasant people. Reporter ron willis also wants to see a trial sooner than later. But the county spokesperson said theres a chance tomaszewski could fight extradition. Its a serious crime largely a Community Concern for public safety. People want to know this is in fact the right suspect. Their 10yearold phillip, and housekeeper figueroa two more savopoulos daughters may be alive today only because they were away at boarding school. The best lead police are disclosing, this very grainy video of someone apparently running behind a building. Police say theyve been getting lots of tips but they need even more. The funeral for savvas, amy and littlellip savopoulos will be a week from today at noon at st. Sofias Greek Orthodox cathedral. In northwest dc, bruce leshan, wusa 9. Dc police chief cathy lanier says she does not think this was a random burglary. The killer knew enough about the family to target them. President obama is using his executive powers to stop local Police Departments from using surplus military equipment out in the streets. Todays actions comes after ferguson then Baltimore Police put that heavy military equipment in the streets to combat riots and protests. The president s order bans local police from using federal funds to purchase certain sorts of military equipment and weapons. Were going to prohibit some equipment made for the battlefield thats not appropriate for local Police Departments. If you take a look at what happened in baltimore theres a good example of how its used and used properly. People like to invoke ferguson. What they forget is none of that equipment came out before the rioting began. So there is a place for that surplus military equipment.
