Its clear to me, at least at this point, that maybe the senate, democratic majority, and the president of the United States have any interest whatsoever in entering any discussions about how to resolve this impasse. And so far, the g. O. P. Seems to be hanging tough. Bruce leshan spoke with one local Republican Congress member who says they put up a good fight, but now its time for spending bill three of attacks on obama care. Its heartbreaking. We have come so far to see this and we cant see anything. Angry tourists at the lincoln. Furloughed workers in southwest. Do you know when youre coming back . And quiet holes. My staff is gone. Virginia republican, frank wolf, said all but two of his aids home and then took to the media to express his change of heart. I think its time to open up to the government. What does that mean . Does that mean you would vote for a resolution . I would vote for a clean resolution. Its time to stop fighting. You can fight, but you dont shut the government down. Hi everybody. Dont get up. D. C. Delegate refuses to send any of her aids home. I declared 100 of my staff essential. She is willing to consider what she calls some sort of small space saving compromise with the gop. They arent going to get back, but there must be other things they want that could be traded. Wolf says the bill still locks in a 10 across the board cut in discretionary spending. Republicans won the issue on the spending levels. On the sequester . Exactly. There are some scenarios that freak him out. Theres a translater working on a document to head off a terrorist plot and that translater is furloughed and misses it. At the capital, bruce leshan, wusa9. Now, most furloughed federal workers had to be out of their offices within four hours of the start of business this morning. But tourists hoping to check out, didnt get that long. Delia goncalves was there for the start of the shutdown. It is a sad day in washington. Thousands of federal workers are furloughed and tourists literally run into roadblocks. It was a moment captured by many clicks of the camera. Hey guys off the steps. And one we havent seen in 17 years. Heavy equipment bringing in barricades to shut down the lincoln memorial. Its a sign of government shut down. All National Parks closed by some of the very people that will be off the job themselves because of the congressional inaction. Apparently they are unable to do it on their own. When the public shows their outrage, they will feel our pain and make some decisions. Im really not happy with the way our congress is acting toward american people. That was Delia Goncalves reporting. The traffic noticeably lighter. Subways visibly less crowded this evening in washington, d. C. The rush hour is not what it usually is. Closed signs greeted the visitors to the Smithsonian Museum and our national zoo. But not everybody was turned away from d. C. s popular memorial. A group of veterans all the way from iowa and mississippi on an honor flight. Here in d. C. , disappointed to find the world war ii memorial was barricaded like everything else. Members of congress stepped in and pushed the barricades aside and the veterans were able to get inside and see the monument. Outstanding. All right, derek, thanks so much. Investigators slug off the shutdown. 62 points to close at 15,191. Stocks on the s and p and nasdaq also ended the day higher. President obama says americans should not be fooled by todays numbers. We may not know the full impact of this republican shutdown for some time. It will depend on how long it lasts. We do know a couple things. The last time the government shut down, it hurt our economy. Unlike 1996, our economy is still recovering from the worse recession in generations. Joining us now to debate the longterm effects of the Government Shutdown is former connecticut congressman, democrat toby moffit, and john shaw, welcome to you both. Thank you. First, lets talk about what we can expect. Mr. Moffit, you were in the house to 1983, there are a lot of talks that go on. What is going on right now with these congressman and senators . Not as much going on behind closed doors as there was many years ago and even ten years ago, because we have such a bitter divide. And i think its something that is reflective of where the country is. I think you have a small, relatively small group of a minority of people who are really ignorant about government, who dont care about government, who view government as the enemy, and you are seeing it now crystallized in a few dozen right wing republicans who dont mind shutting the government down and who are trying to actually do it on a piece of legislation that will be historic. This is an expensive little civics lesson. We are learning what happens when extremists take over a good chunk of the government. I think speaking of extremists, lets talk about this for a minute. Senate democrats voted to refuse to enter into negotiations with the house. Democrats say they want a clean stop gap funding bill. Meanwhile, republicans say it has to have some conditions. So it almost looks as though republicans want to go to the negotiating table and democrats are saying no way, they are taking their ball and going home. Whats important to note is both parties are at fault. We have friends and neighbors who cant go to work and not being paid. That is an outrage. Mayor gray and administration has every right to be upset and im hoping this is resolved very quickly. As we saw in the 1995 crisis, it gone on for quite some time. I think everyone is wanting to solve it as soon as possible. He needs to get everybody into the same room, sit down and talk and its unfortunate that both sides are refusing to talk to one another. Its an outrage. John, i dont know how you can say both parties are at fault equally at fault or extreme for the senate not to go to the negotiating table. Because you know, the senate is reflecting what a lot of the moderate republicans in the house really want. If boehner left the house vote, they would pass a bill that was free of all this garbage that they are trying to put on. Everybody knows it. The moderate republicans have been saying it all day long. They say it for several days. They are growing in numbers. I thirty ball is in the court of those moderate republicans. People like charlie dense of pennsylvania, people like mike rogers who knows what this is costing us in terms of, you are the world. We had a terrible terrorist attack in arobe. We had a terrible terrorist attack in d. C. And fooling around with allowing a right wing group to take the government hostage. With respect, that is inappropriate to say right now that theres right wing groups or left wing groups taking over the congress. Whats important to note here is congress under the constitution was set up as a legislature to Work Together to solve problems. What is going on right now is in the district of columbia, the zoo is closed, state services are shut down, veterans cant get benefits and up to the president , the leader of the United States to force both parties to sit down at the table and solve the issue. You arent for voting . Why shouldnt they vote tomorrow . I think, however, the president needs to step in and show leadership. I believe he has. We could go and talk about this. This is exactly what is going on right now, as you can see, both in the senate and the senate floor and on the house floor as we have seen the last couple of days. Forme connecticut congressman, and john shaw, thank you both for joining us. Lets continue this conversation. This is good. At least we are talking, right . Unlike the lawmakers on capitol hill, derek, back to you. Today is the first day americans can enroll for that new healthcare exchange. This does mark the biggest expansion of Health Coverage in 50 years and on government websites, folks are having to wait a minute to sign up. The department of health and Human Services says nearly 3 Million People have visited healthcare. Gov since midnight. Well, as you may have heard last week, mcgintys mail bag has become mcginty wants to know. Are the republicans right to shut down the government over obama care . Over on the web page, the majority of you say no, they are not. Debra is an example. Everyone deserves affordable healthcare. The g. O. P. Cannot have their way with a a democratic congress. Lucinda writes, no way. It is the law passed fairly and legally in no amount of hostage taking and terrorist tactics to empower a small gang of terrorists into power to support the will of people, strong words. Still, any number of you said obama care is the problem, not the g. O. P. Fighting to stop it. Heres the view from claire gaardeeners perspective. Obama care is a disaster. Every other day this disaster for group delays imprelimmation. The only people who have to comply now are Small Businesses and families who can least afford it. A lot of you dont like obama care, takes effect today. Heres the thing, if its okay for the party that holds one half of one branch of government, its okay for the other side to do the same thing over something it doesnt like, but otherwise cannot stop. This is not a good way to govern. And i believe it is going to come back to bite us on the you know what later on. Thats just my take. Add yours to mcginty wants to know on wusa9. Com.
