Couple of showers today thats a difference from yesterday. To help cool you off. C. , a hit and run accident is now a fatal accident. Were here an first sterile at first sterling and suitland parkway. We know that two vehicles were involved. They were gustod away from the scene just towed away from the scene and outbound lanes are open and inbound is still closed here on suitland parkway. S in what we know what happened. Police say a person driving that volvo tboned another person driving the bmw. Now the driver of the volvo then got out and ran. Police arrested him a short time later, he probably only got a couple of blocks away. Then police say the two people inside the bmw were taken to the hospital. The driver expected to be okay. The passenger however pronounced dead at the scene. Overnight it has been a massive cleanup effort here on suitland parkway. And police have been here reconstructing the scene and now they just towed away the vehicles. So if you are commuting through here in this area, i can tell you the outbound lanes are clear and open to go on suitland. Inbound is still closed but it looks like they are about to open it up anytime. A federal Law Enforcement source tells cbs news that the number of people affected could reach 14 million. More than three times as many as were initially suspected. Including some fbi and cia employees. The Largest Federal Employee Union said thursday it believes the hackers are now in possession of all Personnel Data for every federal employee. Every federal retiree and up to one million former federal employees. The union says the data stolen includes Social Security numbers, age, military records, addresses, pay history and more. Several lawmakers here on capitol hill have blamed the hack on the chinese. Although the u. S. Government so far has not publicly blamed china. Seven days into the manhunt for two convicted killers, who used power tools to break out of prison, Law Enforcement Officials Say they are not giving up. As don champion reports from cadyville, new york, authorities believe the men are on foot and not far from the prison. Reporter authorities remain focused on the town of cadyville this morning. Scouring areas of dense forests and tough terrain. The latest tip has brought them within miles of the Clinton Correctional Facility where richard matt and david sweat broke free. We need to search underneath every rock and behind every tree until we locate these guys. Reporter sources tell cbs news that dogs picked up the fugitives scent in the area. In the woods, police discovered food wrappers, bedding and a footprint. The scene is playing out right in darlenes front yard. With them right in front of my house, it makes me feel a little more at ease. Reporter prison Officials Say the convicted killers used heavy tools and Construction Equipment to cut through a steel wall and steam pipes. Local engineer and Steel Workers jeffers has done work at the facility. He said the two men must have been proficient with the tools or had help. Either theyre very good at what they do, with a lot of good training, or they had some very good equipment. Or somebody else cut the hole for them. Reporter investigators say theyre questioning several people including employees at the prison. But so far, no one has been charged. Don champion, cbs news, cadyville, new york. Authorities in new york have offered a 100,000 reward for information leading to the mens capture. Yesterday, jurors in the colorado Movie Theater shooting trial got a detailed look at the scene. The crime scene was awful. Prosecutors showed them video of the auditorium where 12 people were shot to death and dozens others were wounded. Some jurors gasped at the sight of all the dies. The alleged shooter james holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in that 2012 attack. Also extend to farmer, ben tracy has the story of almond farmer specifically now struggling to make a living. Reporter in californias drought ridden central valley. We visited jim jaspers almond farm. Where he showed us this. I assume there used to be trees here. Yes there were threes here. Reporter hes cut down 51,000 almond trees in the past 16 months because he cant afford to water them. Jasper is now paying ten times more for water to keep his remaining orchard alive. And investing half a Million Dollars drilling wells hoping the find more water to find more water, is your business sustainable . I would like to think that it is. But in reality, it probably isnt. Reporter California Almonds are a 6. 5 billion industry. The most profitable crop in the state. But almond trees are also thirsty. A recent study shows that it takes one gallon of water to grow one single almond. Some people look at that and say that just sounds crazy. Almost anything you grow is going to take a lot of water. Its like that. Reporter they use one trillion gallons of water a year, five times more than los angeles and San Francisco combined. My water has more value growing almonds for other people than it is to water my lawn. Reporter dino is a fourth generation carry farmer and hes dairy farmer and hes converting 35 pocket of the land to 35 of the land to almond trees despite the drought. No water is wasted. New warnings are out this morning about the impact of dehydration on children. A new harvard study finds more than half of all u. S. Children are not drinking enough water. Ive got an update for you outbound traffic is now open and it looks like it will be opening inbound here at first sterling. Actually it just opened up as much as since ive been here standing here. First sterling and suitlands parkway. Both sides inbound and outbound are open here this morning. After a fatal accident. It happened at about 11 45 last night. Take a look at some of this video from the scene. This is what police tell us happened. They say a driver of a volvo t boned a bmw here at this intersection. The driver of the volvo got out and ran and only got a couple of blocks and police were able to arrest him. The driver of the bmw taken to the hospital. The driver the passenger rather of the bmw was taken to the hospital as well and passenger did not make it. They were from pounced dead at the hospital. The driver is expected to be just fine. No word yet on charges for the driver of that volvo but police did recover a gun from their vehicle. But once again, if you are commuting through here this morning, it is just fine here. Traffic is moving in both directions on suitland parkway. That is the latest here from d. C. , we are about to get the update from d. C. Police ill have more for you coming up later on in the show. Investigators say the victims were inside a van when they were shot last night in the northbound lanes near route 450. Both victims are reported to be in stable condition. Well, we certainly have progress going on right now in southeast d. C. As you just heard Nikki Burdine mention both the inbound and outbound lanes of the parkway now open. Metro is vowing to take up safety recommendations of the National Transportation safety board even if it inconveniences thousands of riders. Thousands of tuna crabs also known as red crabs washing up along ocean beach. They often hang around with tuna. And tuna love to eat they have. From underwater, the red crabs look like lobsters. Spreading their pinchers like an ocean monster. Ball went right there and we were like oh dont want to go grab it. Beachgoers tiptoeing around the crabs, curious pups dont know what to think of the krusation. My dog eats like 35 every time hes out here. They pinch him on the tongue. The invasion doesnt happen often. They live in the warm open waters down in baja feeding off plankton. We see this occur every few years. And right now, the water is a little bit warmer off our coast. Some believe its el nino thats simpling in the red crabs last month the tuna crabs washed ashore in Pacific Beach before that, cbs news 8 features the crabs appearance in 2002 and then in 1997 preceding the last el nino. The third person was taken to the hospital not cooperating and not talking to police. Now for the victims vehicle, the driver and the passenger were both taken to the hospital.
