I think when people sit back and look theyre going to say when all is said and done, marion is a changed agent. If you put aside all the crap, you look at how the city has changed and how the city has grown, marion barry is responsible for a lot of that. There are people who dont want to give him credit because they kind of look at his past and say okay, well, dethis and this. But all you have to do is go to 14th and u and the reavs center and see how the area has changed. Marion is responsible for that. If you look at the number of people who are in the Gay Community in the city, marion is responsible for that. If you look at years ago the number of blacks who were in positions of authority, marion is responsible for that. And oftentimes when i talk to young people on the street, theyre connected because they say marion gave my father a job. My fathers now a middle class person. Just because it only made 123 million i think thats the first weekend and only domestically too. You have the thanksgiving holidays coming up where you know a lot of people will be going to the theater. Pretty sure this will skyrocket to the top which they always do. Our facebook friend ta maria love wrote a, retire. People dont have a choice. Well, they obviously dont have a choice about going gray either because the answer is welcome back to wusa9 at 6 00 a. M. Were remembering the life and legacy of former d. C. Mayor marion barry. Were joined by phil mendelson. Thanks for coming in. Thank you and good morning. Your reflections as you go through a storied career both good and bad. What are your thoughts . Its clear from the public reaction that marion barry did a lot of great things. He touched a lot of people. Thats why he was so popular. Even in spite of his flaws, he was still popular because he was able to give voice to a lot of folks who felt they had no voice otherwise. So a lot of people focus on, you know, the flaws, the criticisms. Actually i think it was a plus that he was one of those few politicians who would stand up and say im flawed, im not perfect. He owned up to it. Yes. He always said people would learn from him if they thought they were having a tough time, look at him and learn from him and how he per seared by persevered. A problem that a lot of politics have is politicians we have is we try to hold ourselves out as being better than the other person and then we get caught in hypocrisy. I dont recall marion barry saying some of the things he had done shouldnt have done. He owned up to it. He had a charm about him but it was more than just charm, it was connected to policy. He connected with people and helped people. What will the councils role in the Funeral Plans being made . The council absolutely will have a role because he was a Council Member for the last eight years. And, you know, hed been a Council Member as long as he had been mayor, roughly 16 years each. Its too soon to say what exactly the plans will be. I know that there are discussions about his body lying in state at the wilson building. But we are still waiting to hear from the family. Were working together in whats most appropriate. Would you say having known him for years, youve been on the council since i believe i was first elected in 1998. The impact, one of the things maybe on the Positive Side that might stand out, would it be some of the program he started . Would it be his relationship . What would you say was one of the things that probably made a big impact on the city . Maybe the biggest impact that although he wasnt itself first mayor under home rule, he was the second. Because he was mayor for three terms in a row, he really did set a lot of the tone for how we entered home rule, how we began to selfgovern ourselves. Before that he had been an at large member of the council. That may be his greatest legacy even though people arent really talking about that good people say its hard to think of about d. C. Without marion barry but we will have to continue o. The council has to set the process in motion for two special elections, for ward 4 and ward 8. Give us a timeline on when that will happen . I dont know for sure. I suspect both elections will occur same day because its more efficient for the board and they have that flexibility and i suspect theyll be very late march, early april. Thats roughly been the timing for these special elections. Phil mendelson, chair of the d. C. Council, thank you very much for being here with us and sharing your thoughts d remembrances of marion barry. Thank you. Lets go to howard now for an update on the forecast. A record warm day potentially. We are a seeing the skies were seeing the skies beginning to clear some after last nights rains. 71. These temperatures may be too cool. We may have to go 74, 75. Im forecasting 70 to 75 but if we saw upper 70s today, that would not surprise me. The records were going for are 74 in washington and dulles. 73 baltimore. 75 martinsburg. I think all of them are potentially in jeep day. This morning were in jeopardy. This morning were talking about the record warmth. Well be seasonably cool tomorrow. Only in the 50s. A coastal storm wednesday threatens the area with rain and snow. Yes, snow. Best chances of that will be west of i95. The farther you go west, the better chance for something to actually stick on the ground. So today 74. It drops to 55 tomorrow and stays in the 30s on wednesday with the rain and snow a yellow alert day. A little early to figure out exactly how much well see. Well have more probably later today. Thursday and friday still cold and milder over the weekend. Beverly . Not everybody has gotten away for the holidays just yet.
