In culpeper Hank Silverberg, wusa9. The star witness in the corruption trial of former Virginia Governor Bob Mcdonnell returns to the stand and Jonnie Williams testified about that 165 in gifts and loans he gave the 165,000 in gifts and loans he gave to the governor and his wife in exchange for the prestige the governor could give his business. Reporter so far theres no smoking gun. The defense has poked some holes in williams testimony, but the prosecution has facts, emails and a money trail to support its case. No comment. Reporter star witness Jonnie Williams concluded his testimony today in the corruption trial of former governor Bob Mcdonnell and his wife maureen. Williams says he gave the first couple more than 150,000 in gifts and loans as bribes for the governors health. But Bob Mcdonnells attorney asserts the governor did Nothing Official to help williams. He said to williams, please tell me a single thing that my client did for you after you gave him this 50,000 loan. Williams answered, i can tell you what happened. I cant give you specific dates,. First and foremost hes going to argue he never really did anything for Jonnie Williams, that at the end of the day there wasnt a result, a Government Action taken on behalf of williams as evidence of corruption. Reporter the former governor said he thought williams was just a very generous friend. Williams denies that and insists their relationship was purely business. He said on the stand, i needed something. Im maintaining a very important business relationship. Williams has two immunity deals from prosecution and the defense is alleging hes lying now to save himself from prosecution, but williams insists that he has no reason to lie now and that if he does, hell go to jail. He said, this is a very serious situation. Im telling the truth, period. So what about the assertion by defense that marijuana can only had a crush on Jonnie Williams that Maureen Mcdonnell had a crush on Jonnie Williams and there was a close relationship . Ill have that at 6 00. White collar criminal offense attorney tim cain joins us now. Tim is a former prosecutor who worked in the Public Integrity section which is now prosecuting Jonnie Williams. Did Jonnie Williams dirty up the governor enough . Im pretty happy the way williams testimony has gone and keep in mind to keep the bribery and extortion charges the prosecution must show that both the first lady and governor understood there to be a quid pro quo. I dont think williams delivered that. I dont think he dirtied the governor up enough. Youre suggesting he left some doubt about the governors involvement in this scheme. Absolutely. His testimony focused on the conversations he had with Maureen Mcdonnell and he admitted on crossexamination that the governor might not have even known that many of the gifts were coming from Jonnie Williams, but more importantly williams did not testify to having had any conversations with the governor where they talked about both money from Jonnie Williams. And the result. And the things that the governor would do for Star Scientific in the same conversation. The absence of those direct discussions will make this case tougher for the prosecution. How does the prosecution come back . First off the prosecution had to have understood this was going to happen. They cant be surprised. This is their star witness. They had to have known what Jonnie Williams was going to say and wasnt going to say about the governors involvement. I think thats the reason they put Jonnie Williams so early in the lineup to give themselves a little cushion to prove their case through other means. Kneel have to show that through circumstantial evidence the governor knew and intended for this to be arrangement. Theyll point to things like the timing of events between the official acts and the gifts. Theyre going to hammer away at the alleged ever of concealment and theyre going to appeal the jurors common sense. Hey, look, how could the governor have understood all these things were coming from Jonnie Williams without any Strings Attached . That makes no sense. Before we go, the governor now is going to take the stand at some point. Are you thinking that jurors remember the last thing they hear, so what Jonnie Williams said may be old news by the time the governor takes the stand . Thats absolutely right, lesli. The governor, if he still chooses to testify, his testimony is going to be critical to the outcome of the case. Criminal trial lawyers have a saying when you have a defendant that testifies, Everything Else in the trial goes out the door. The jurys decision will hinge on whether or not they believe the defendants testimony. If the governor takes the stand, thats going to be critical. Reporter Clarence Ditlow heads up of the center for vehicle safety, a nonprofit that alerts the government to certain problems of the older model jeeps with the gas tank close to the rear axle. After they agreed to recall 1993 to 1998 grand cherokees and some jeep liberty models none of the vehicles have been fixed. The national Highway Safety administration put forth a special order. They want to know why none of the vehicles have the trailer hitch fix that is supposed to protect the gas tank in the event of a low speed crash. In that document nhtsa expressed concern about the pace of the recall and calculated it would take the automaker two to five years to finish all the repairs. Ditlow says special orders are rarely used. This special order issued by nhtsa was really an act of exasperation. Right. Its the last thing they could do. Chrysler says its kept nhtsa in the loop about their production timeline and that it should have all the parts it needs by 2015 and should complete repairs by march of 2016. The company also says it had to seek out more suppliers to help them meet the demand and design new tools for the dealerships to make the repairs. Youre at chryslers mercy. Youre at the governments mercy and the only thing that you know is its taking too long to get the trailer listen put on your vehicle. If you have one of these vehicles, the center for auto safety says limit your use. Dont let your teens drive them. Chrysler maintains its vehicles are safe, not defective and that suppliers are working overtime to produce those trailer hitches for the recalled Jeep Grand Cherokee and liberty models. Nhtsa says it doesnt have any issues with the remedy but will continue to monitor the process and take more action if it needs to. Ill continue to follow this story, too. In 2005 chrysler moved that gas tank ahead of the rear axle. The company says not for safety issues but to provide more cargo space. Keeping your family safe, wusa9 first alert weather.
