Philadelphia inquirer reports 190 Public School teaching jobs did not even get filled fly the start of the school year because the help wanted signs went up too late. So now toward the end of this school year, the help wanted good teachers classified are moving to up first class and first priority. So, when next school year start, every kid and every classroom and every school will have a teacher this time unlike this year. And, they are also hiring 06 nurses and ooh counselors, too, so that there is at least one of each of those in every school because they dont have a nurse in every school right now or a counselor. The Teachers Union leader says it is a nice goal, not likely to be met, because teachers have not gotten raises in four years, and alex, chris, if philly teachers dont buy classrooms supplies themselves with their own personal money their classrooms and their kids wont have any. And we know that from hearing it from a lot of teachers, and one of our own anchors sitting on that set right now has a caught here is a teach here had to do just that, buy whole bunch of stuff so her kids would have stuff to be able to learn here in a philadelphia Public School. Wow. Good that theyre getting teachers. Lets get those applications in, thanks, steve. Resources still thin, but at least step in the right direction. So again, as steve said, i think he put it perfectly for the first time he can remember a positive story from the Philadelphia School district. All right, 6 05 the time. The president swayze selecting to Supreme Court justice should not be about politics. Our Supreme Court really is unique. It is supposed to be about politics t has to be. And it should stay that way. A Supreme Court justice has not been both nominated and confirm during president ial Election Year since 1940. It has happened before, and the big debate on capitol hill right now is when does the president s term end . Is it seven years or eight years . A lot whatever the democrats are saying. They want it happening during a Election Year, the people should decide. 6 07. The nations second busiest Commuter Rail service is back in operation this morning. Judge Merrick Garlands heads to capitol hill. Think could determine whether he becomes the countrys news he Supreme Court justice. And announces cents his pick for the lehigh court in a emotional announcement. Lets bring in doug luzader from washington, d. C. At this point his odds dont look good but boy his resume sure does, doug. Yes, he has lengthy resume, chris, alex, which actually is casino of unusual these days for a Supreme Court candidate. But nevertheless even the white house acknowledges, this is going to be an uphill battle and before judge Merrick Garlands, he has to run the gauntlet here on capitol hill. This is the greatest honor of my life other than her agreeing to marry me 28 years ago. Judge Merrick Garland looking at the opportunity after lifetime, and president obama looking at one last chance to change the direction of the u. S. Supreme court. I have fulfilled my constitutional duty, now it is time for the senate to do theirs. Ever since the dense of Anthony Scalia last month, republicans made it clear the senate they control will not sign off on replacement during a Election Year. The steaks are enormous, the American People would like to have a say in it, we will guarantee they do have a say in it. While fair to say a republican president would almost certainly be doing the same thing as president obama, no ones hands here are particularly clean. For as much as the president hammers republicans for blocking an up or down vote, when he was in the senate did he almost the exact same thing. At one point trying to fill a bus area vote to confirm samuel alito to the high court. And Vice President joe biden back in 1992 when he chaired the Senate Judiciary committee actually laid out the current republican position. The Senate Judiciary committee should seriously consider none scheduling confirming until after the Political Campaign season is over. But it is a risk for republicans to go down that path. And it is a risk for garland, too. This is going to be his last chance to get on the Supreme Court. But he could twist in the wind for months. And come out of this really with a beating. Yes, it is not an easy process to go through, and that process for garland continues today, hell be on capitol hill meeting with Democratic Senators he may eventually meet with some republicans, as well, but that does not mean that he is going to actually get a confirmation hearing. Thats true. When you say eventually thats the ones actually too long even meet with him. Looks like hell have some meetings with Democratic Senators, republicans say theyre perfectly willing to meet with him, as women. But scheduling a hearing is something else. Dave, just saying, if you use the logic that you dont want to consider a candidate that is put up by a president in his last year, then how many senators in their last year should be able to vote upper or down or even decide whether or not there is a hearing . Well, look, maybe a valid argument to bring up. I think it is fair to say that there is enough hypocrisy on both sides that you can change the parties around, everyone would be taking the exact opposite position that youre taking now, if it was republican president he would be trying, he or she would be trying to appoint adjust tis, and democrats here in the senate would be trying to block it so everybody would be reversed. History of hypocrisy, youre reporting live from dc, doug . Shocker. Thanks. 6 18. Dave . Yes, fog out there this morning, and that will be what were dealing with first. The first part of the day, we had the fog, then latter part of the day showers, storms. Lets deal with the fog first, visible down to quarter or less in some areas, half mile millville, atlantic city, write town, philadelphia at four, there is cool mile, pottstown, slow it down, will be with us for another hour before the sun comes out, burns this fog off. Fortys and 30s now, not down to the freezing mark, just cool start, little chill in the air. We warm up to the 60s this afternoon. By the time we heat things up, showers and storms will be developing. Nothing on ultimate doppler right nowment look about say noon, between noon and 2 00 showers developing north and west, they could contain gusty winds and some hail. Theyll move through the philadelphia area by about 5 00. So if youre out celebrating, you got the green on the radar here, so just be ready for some rain, and the showers could contain few strong thunderstorms as well. Clearing out by tonight. So we talk about temperatures, into the 60s, today. But thats as warm as we get for awhile, because the seven day forecast, this is getting through the first day of spring here, that will be on sunday, so say some string snow, watch how the storm develops, chilly day on monday, warmer on tuesday, and wednesday. The Philadelphia School district is being looking to hire at least 800 educators to make sure there is a teacher in every single classroom this coming fall. And the interesting part about this is that theyre using new way to get those spots filled. Steve keeley has those details we get this inquirer martha woodall, reported this story last night, so after layoffs, closings, cutbacks, theyre doing some simple math here again at the School District headquarters, and for a change it is not subtraction, it is addition, and here is the math problem. 800 teachers, 60 nurses, 50 counselors. All adding up, and looking to fill 910 jobs by the end of the school year june 30th. So every classroom has a teacher, every school has a nurse, and counselor, by the start of next school year. Which they did not have this school year. And while Union Leaders say it is a positive plan, they expect a negative result. Doubtful, they say, that the district will get its hoped for 5,000 applications for all of these openings because of the pay, the teachers start at just 45,306, and the reason it is solo, the Union Leaders say, teachers here in philadelphia Public Schools have not gotten an raise in four years. Teachers and staff first they want their kids in classrooms to have Typical School supplies, they got to buy it themselves with their own money. And weve learned that firsthand, alex and chris, i dont know if you heard me last time, learned that firsthand because one of our staffers on the show has a caught here is a teacher. And she spent whole lot of money because she cares about her kids, and wanted simple classroom supplies. So ask around there on the set. And youll find out who it was, i dont know if they want that publicly known, but somebody real close to you right now knows a teacher doing just that. Well, thank you, steve. Important because more teachers in the classrooms. Such giving people typically and put in a lot of hours and as steve said they do so much that you dont see and a lot of times out of their own pocket. So true. 6 35, republican cold state senate has passed a spending bill. But the governor is already threatening to veto it.
