There are some members of the Transgender Community who are fearing theyre under attack after two separate incidents just this week in philadelphia. Reporter good morning, karen, according to Philadelphia Police, four people in the Trans Community were victims of two separate crimes, as you mentioned, that happened earlier this week, police say it is too early to know for sure if the two are connected or if there is a specific threat against people who are transgender. Investigators say sunday night in West Philadelphia three trans women were held up at gunpoint and monday night a man was shot to death coming to the aid of a trans gender lady friend who was being robbed. Police say both incidents occurred after dates were a ranked on back page. Com, a classified website, descriptions of the gunmen are similar, but police cannot confirm a connection or shared motive between the ooh two cases. Day gentleman, transgender woman, and long Time Community activist, says, the Trans Community fears that they are being targeted. This is nothing new. Weve been saying this for years, that trans women of color are in eminently more danger than most of the other folks in the Lgbt Community is. Bill anderson has some light and hope for people dealing with the opioid epiderm glike that hope it comes from a man who went from being part of the problem, quite frankly, admittedly, to being part of the solution. Substance use disorder, addiction, has affected the black community for decades. And people have been silent. You think of drug addiction, street dealers, who do you think of . For years that image was probably inner city, low income, violent minority males, right . But that image is changing. All the sudden couple of years ago the Opioid Epidemic hit the suburbs. And people that look different than me started dying. Ought sudden there was congressional hearing, people started talking about it. I mention the changing face of drug addiction, not to make people angry or be devisive, quite the contrary. I mention it so people understanded drug addiction is no longer a day problem that people can point to and ignore. It is a we problem. That impact all of us. The opioid relate overdoses now one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in our city. Lives are being cut short. Families are being destroyed. Today while the mayor of the Opioid Task Force was taking place experts discussed the growing problem. But different perspective. I met ramon cruz, who has his personal experience with drugs in our city. Everybody wanted to be a drug dealer back then, in my neighborhood, because the note or eye at this, money, certain things that come with it. Reporter what came with that was nearly 20 years every dealing drugs in kensington. What someone would make a year, i could make in a month. Reporter what wasnt discussed among dealers and users, and what ultimately turned ramons life around, is that you rarely, if ever, see anyone his age involved with drugs. Theyre either in jail, or theyre dead. Youre lucky to be alive. Yes, i am. Yes, i am. I was shot on the street, left for dead, and through the grace of god, i can use my arm again. Nearly killed, likely one arrest from life jail sentence, and ramon still dont know the exact moment he decided no more. But he is glad he did. Im not miserable any more. I dont have to look behind my back no more. I dont have to worry about somebody kicking in my door trying to rob me. Change was complete turn around, went in drug dealer to Drug Prevention worker. Same neighborhoods where he sold drugs, he warns people about his past. Like a cycle. And i feel that somewhere along the line the cycle needs to be cut. Who better than someone that was that lived that experience . Ramon thankfully turned his life around. Speaking with him today, and todays hearing, serves as a remind their this drug problem can and will affect your neighborhood too.
