Reporter the kids were kept busy learning how to build homemade eclipse viewers and during intermittent cloudiness they played games. But when the brightness returned, so, too, did the excitement. We had chance to talk to self wildlife Rehab Centers and theyre saying pretty much the same thing most bald eagles probably have some lead in their bodies already and we are the ones putting it there. Hard to look at a bald eagle suffering from lead poisoning. Across the country birds are being brought in to wildlife Rehab Centers with high led symptoms and many will die. We know aft least five cases in pennsylvania in just the past two weeks and those are just among the birds caught and taken in. Heres one of them. This eagle didnt make it. Is this a surprise . No. This has been problem for many years. Lisa smith the executive director of tristate bird rescue and research in newark, delaware. Theyve seen ten birds this year with lead poisoning half of them bald eagles only two could be nursed back to health and released. Rehabilitators say these deaths are preventible. Hunter that is use led ammunition may not be able to retrieve what they have shot, um, or they mayfield dress the animal and leave the gut pile in the wild. Maybe thinking that theyre helping to feed the wildlife but all of that containing froms of lead hammar humidity anything. Reporter when eagles or other birds of will of prey feed on the carcass theyre ingesting the lead and low levels can impact depth perception causing collision in flight. Eagles seem to be one of the most sensitive but we have seen it in other birds like red tailed hawks and vol hers. We also see in it water fowl. Millions of people are now reaction to go what they witnessed and whole lot of folks actually took trips to the path of totality where they could actually see the total eclipse one of those is derek pits the chief astronomer in the Franklin Institute. He joins us via skype from rose krantz memorial ail airport in st. Josephs missouri. Apparently the skies opened up there just in time. They really did. We had spectacular event here and the thing that was supposed surprising about it is that the sky was cloudy overcast until just a few moments before totality and in fact it was raining ten minutes before we got a break in the clouds that allowed to us see. So we had a lot of drama with our viewing here. But it work out perfectly because right at the moment of totality the clouds thinned enough that we can see a tremendous view of the sun. We can see the corona. We could see prominences around the edge of the disc of the sun and it really was a spectacular view. So you were literally dancing im guessing in the shadow of the moon. How cool is that . Derek . Yes, thats exactly what i did. I danced in the shadow of the moon and we had two minutes and 39 seconds of that opportunity, and the most probably one of the most spectacular aspects of this was being able to watch the shadow of the moon as it approached our location realiz realizing were actually in the shadow of the moon and even though we had such cloud cover, it was still just a really remarkable experience. Is there really a dark side of the moon . [ laughter ] well, you know, actually, you can say that we were looking at the dark side of the moon today. Yeah. We were in the shadow so we were on the dark side, and the folks that live on the sun, well they got to see the sun side. Did you bring a whole bunch of philadelphians down there with you . Well actually we did have quite a crew with us here. We had a crew from Franklin Institute and my location over by my car i was referring to as franklin station here in st. Joseph, and so we had crew from Franklin Institute here our social media team but also other people here from philadelphia from the Rittenhouse Astronomical Society they were out here as well. Along with about 15 maybe 16,000 other friends of ours who joined us at the airfield here. Amazing. What is the one moment that stood out to you or surprised you derek . I think the moment that really stood out and surprised me was when different groups of people across the field had a glimpse of totality. You can hear the yell, the screaming, the whoops of joy all of that as it rolled across the field and i realized that people are actually now emotionally connected to this really wonderful science experience. Thats really great thing to have happen. Sounds awesome, man. We missed you here but glad you were able to experience it. I tell you. Im sorry i couldnt there be but im glad i was he here. Im sure you are glad that youre there. Now, did you collect any cool science . No, i did and real dollar any science here. This was observing the science i did was comparing what i saw in this eclipse to the last total Solar Eclipse to see what differences were apparent. Derek, that is just awesome. The next one is 2024 and this is the path of so al will the goes right through cleveland, ohio, lake ear wreak lake ontario, right through buffalo, new york, erie, pa, through upstate new york and Portland Oregon so this is a pretty good track for us. Totality does not come through philadelphia but we will be at about 90 as far as the coverage is concerned. Then, of course, you have 2045 very similar to the path of today which was 2017. But im going for 2024, guys, thats going to be april 8th. Im going take that day off, okay . Lets take look outside. Down the shore in wildwood looking really good this afternoon and many folks got their eclipse glasses out and observed down the shore today. 84 degrees the temperature. The dew point temperature 68. So that humidity is creeping up. We have some showers and thunderstorms moving right now threw berks county, heading into the Lehigh Valley and also crossing the delaware bay. Temperatures in the 80s with the exception of the poconos been wildwood at 76 and 79 respecti respectively. Southerly breeze keeping it pretty warm. Still down the shore with an ocean water temperature of 76. As we look at the dew point, we see some 70s. That means oppressive conditions. So you combine the heat and humidity tomorrow, it will feel like its around 100 degrees. So we havent had a lot of hot days in august.
