The Health Department survey found that one in three adults in the city used prescription opioid in the past year. 13 say they used one in the past week. It found most of those people were getting opioids from their Health Care Provider but nearly 20 are getting them from friends, row tiffs or even street dealers. Our city along with the rest of the country facing a Drug Overdose crisis. Last year, there were more than 900 deaths in philadelphia. Some fear the number will continue to grow. So the key to breaking the cycle of opioid addiction is really a greater understanding of how it begins. A hospital in colorado is at the forefront of a Pilot Program looking at different ways to treat pain. Foxs alicia acuna reports from denver. Reporter for many, the first point of contact with opioid medication is the emergency room. Dr. Don straighter who works in the emergency room at Swedish Medical Center in englewood, colorado remembers the most he knew that had to change it was while treating a young woman who had overdosed on heroin. And what she said is, i got my first prescription for opioid from an emergency physician for an ankle sprain. Reporter he is now part of a Pilot Program launched by the Colorado Hospital Association in eight hospitals an few freestanding ers with one formidable goal. Reduce the heroin issue on the street while still treating pain. Reporter Rachel Duncan part of a team that includes nurses and physicians on the sixmonth test run. According to the National Institute of drug abuse, nearly 80 of heroin users started with prescription opioids. Guidelines in this program include encouraging physicians to write fewer opioid prescriptions, treating pain without narcotics, and getting addicted patients on therapy medication. The armaments, powerful alternates to opioids to treat pain for often serious conditions locally.
