One of the hardest hit areas in florida so far appears to be saint augustine. This is what the streets there look like right now. Some have turned into raging rivers. This is video of the water rushing past casablanca inn on the bay where at least a couple dozen people are trapped including a number of children. The mayor there predicts damage to the city will be widespread. Many homes have been pounded by waves and the storm surge could only get worse. Fox news says five people have died so far as a result of the storm. Two of those were medical related deaths in saint lucy county. They happened after the county was forced to suspend its emergency services. Also right now, at least 600,000 people are without power and this could be the worst Hurricane Impact since 1989 and hurricane hugo. President obama reminding people today this is a slowmoving storm and it may actually take days until we know the full extent of the damage. I just want to emphasize to everybody that this a still a really dangerous hurricane, that the potential for storm surge flooding, loss of life and severe Property Damage continues to exist. And people continue to need to follow the instructions of their local officials over the course of the next 24 to 48, 72 hours. Devastation in haiti become morgue heartbreaking by the minute. The death toll has sky rocked to 842 people. Many people died from falling debris as winds of 145 miles an hour tour through the island on tuesday. U. S. Marines are in haiti tonight assisting the victims as many as 60,000 people remain in shelters. Were also getting a new look at the damage in the bahamas tonight this is video of the destruction in new province. Were told many trees and power lines are down as the storm made landfall there yesterday. The strong winds also caused boats to smash on to the shore. This is not over yet, scott . Its still dangerous hurricane. Category two hurricane right now, chris, as it continues to batter parts of the southeast coast. Jacksonville to brunswick, savannah and charleston look at those rain bands spiraling in so that water will really start to pile up. Downgraded now category two hurricane maximum sustained winds around that shelter of circulation around 110 miles an hour. How far is it from the coast of florida . About 40 miles to the east of jacksonville. But look up the coast. Savannah, charleston now under a tornado watch until midnight. So not only are we dealing with strong winds there could be tornadoes that spin up due to that friction with the water and the land. Take look at the last 24 hours as it just kind of paralelled the coast the saving grace for some is that that eye stayed about 10 to 20 miles off the shore so the damage could be a lot worse. So heres that latest advisory now moving to the north at about 12 Miles Per Hour. It could make landfall close to a van in a by midnight. If it does not make landfall in georgia it could make landfall near charleston by tomorrow morning. Anyone flying should obviously check with their airline about the status of their flight. Dozens of members from new jersey search and rescue teams are heading down south to help victims of matthew. State Police Deployed 80 members of new Jersey Task Force one today from joint base mcguire dix lakehurst. Police fire and other emergency crews will help with rescuing victims from floods. Bethlehem police chief mark did he lewis yo says investigators traced the message to computer owned by a 14yearold boy, a student at freedom high. The boy was arrested at his home thursday night. Its tough to tell from the cameras angle theres just about a foot or less to go before the river crests and high tide is supposed to hit at the height of this storm this evening. So it could be potentially a deadly situation. This is still a really dangerous hurricane that the potential for storm surge, flooding, loss of life and severe Property Damage continues to exist. Reporter places like savannah are now bored up and bracing for Hurricane Matthew as it continues to roar up the east coast. Causing flooding, downing trees and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands. Storm that is already left a deadly wake in the carribbean killing hundreds in haiti and leaving thousands homeless there. When it began blasting florida, it was downgraded to category three storm but still packing 120mile an hour winds. By mid afternoon new friday matthews winds had dropped to 115 miles an hour but officials warn this storm is still a real threat. South carolinas governor warns the forecast for her state has gotten worse. With major potentially deadly storm surges, flooding and winds all predicted there. Please evacuate. Even if its to a shelter. Reporter hundreds of thousands have fled coastal South Carolina, some still are not heeding evacuation warnings. Weve been watching it, but, yeah, i guess were not too worried. Not worried enough to leave. Reporter well, maybe they should rethink that. Ill tell you why. The brunt of this storm the height of it is supposed to impact here between midnight and 2 00 a. M. Eastern time. That coincides with high tide and theyre expecting a storm surge of six to 10 feet. You have to factor in high tide which is 7 feet. So worse Case Scenario 10foot storm surge plus seven, 17 feet of water coming over. I spent the day talking to people about the restrictions on a service that thousands use every day. Everyone has the right to make living and some people i know a lot of people who subsidize their regular income with driving for lyft or uber or whatever else. I think it gives a better opportunity for more people to go out there and make money and raise their families and put food on the table. Twenty four in glenn county, county that is brunswicks i guess the county seat. And right over there is interstate 95. That was the dividing line for the mandatory evacuation order. The governor of georgia said anybody on the eastern side of i95 needed to leave ahead of Hurricane Matthew and pretty easy to see why. That evacuation zone on that side of the highway theyre getting worse than we are right here. You can see lots of winds and rain and again were a little bit inland but the damage is already happening. Take look were at a gas station to get shelter from the storm. Those are peaces of the roof of this gas station that blew off probably about an hour or so ago. So just because were little inland does not mean were immune. Here in glenn county, commissioners have been using their Facebook Page to update people. They told people around 4 00 oclock this afternoon it was time to shelter in place. And do not go out. It happened on september 21st. Investigators say this man walked into the store along west girard avenue, took out gun and demanded cash from a worker. He got away with some money and rode off on bicycle. New Jersey Transit train that crashed into the Hoboken Terminal last week has been removed from the station. Investigators are now examining that train to determine why it crash. It may take at least a year for the final report to be complete. But the ntsb does say the train was going twice the speed limit before it slammed into a bumping post at the end of the rail line in hoboken. The train crashed right into the stations waiting area. The impact killed a woman and injured more than 100 others. New Jersey Transit is resuming partial service at the Hoboken Terminal on monday. Tensions come to point outside detroit courthouse. A fight breaks out after a hearing for a pregnant womans murder. It happened yesterday after two suspects were arraigned in the murder of amanda benton. Cameras were rolling as the victims and suspects families started yelling and fighting each other. Benton because mother of three and was five months pregnant. Her beaten and burped body was found last friday in abandoned home. They were driving around with her in the trunk of the car and i pray to god that my daughter was already gone before they set her on fire. Officers rushed in broke up the fight and put several people in handcuffs at least one person was arrested for assault. Hurricane matthew has forced thousands of people out of their homes its also impacting pets who are already without owners. Dozens of dogs from a shelter in South Carolina were taken to another shelter in gaithersburg, maryland in case more space is needed for humans down south. Humane Society Workers are hoping some good will actually come out of this and that the dogs and cats will get adopted there. More bad news comes in. Hurricane matthew this storm now responsible for five deaths. Hundreds of thousands more are without power. Dozens of people are reportedly strandestranded flood waters. Back to your fox 29 Weather Authority now as people in the south assess the destruction left behind by matthew. Our weekend forecast is looking not bad. Well take that. Meteorologist Scott Williams has your forecast coming up in 15 seconds. Continuing to follow whats happening right now with Hurricane Matthew. About 40 miles to the east of jacksonville, florida but take look at that center of circulation. That has been to the east of florida throughout the entire day. Lessening the impact but nonetheless the damage has already been done for eastern parts of florida. Heavy rape bands continue to go spiral in and take look at the shape of the southeast coast here. So all of that water is just going to kind of pile up up and down the coast here and that is why that storm surge can turn deadly. Also, take look at tornado watch box. That includes savannah to charleston until midnight. Typical of hurricane as they try and make landfall. Lets talk a little bit about the last 24 hours. You can see how it just kind of paralelled the in order coast. A lot of heavy rain Power Outages but once again that eye it stayed offshore sparing florida a lot of considerable damage had that eye been a little farther to the west making landfall. So it did not officially make landfall in florida. Winds already picking up right now gusting to 52 miles an hour in jacksonville. Gusting to 40 in beauford, South Carolina. So as we talk about the category two status right now with matthew what will it mean as far as some of the potential storm surge. Moderate damage. We could see storm surge up to 8 feet and some of those low lowlying areas for coastal georgia and South Carolina. They call it the low country because some of those islands the Barrier Islands are at or slightly below sea level. How much rain are we talking . Take look. Myrtle beach, Charleston Savannah upwards of five to 10inches of rain. So what does matthew mean for us and for the weekend forecast . Some of that moisture could try and interact with a cold frontal off to the west that will kind of give us lift in the atmosphere, clouds and also some showers especially saturday afternoon into saturday evening. So well time things out by lunch time still pretty quiet but by 3 00 in the afternoon were looking at some light scattered showers across the area into your evening time frame. 6 00 oclock, south and east of philadelphia into parts of south jersey and some of that rainfall if we tap into that tropical moisture could be heavy. Atlantic city into cape may and sussex county. Its been beautiful friday though. Temperatures right now still in the mid 70s after a high today of 78 degrees. So for this evening, it stays dry. Light jackets but cloud cover will be rolling in. Temperatures by 11 00 oclock low 60s. 57 tonight in the city. 50 in the suburb. For tomorrow its mostly cloudy, scattered afternoon showers.
