snow continuing to come down out there. this is just round one, right? >> this is round one of a two- part storm. the second part will be the more impressive of the two. i do want to emphasize, off to the south an east, it is just rain. the line is setting up across the washington area as expected. makes for a difficult forecast and if you are driving through the snow, it makes for a difficult commute. there you can he soo to -- there you can see it. this will be with us for much of the morning hours. then we'll get a break. i think by late morning, things will quiet down and don't be lulled into false security because by later this afternoon, the second part of the system will come roaring in. that part of the system means business. we'll see snowfall rates very impressive by mid- to late afternoon. out to the west, that is the main event pushing in western portions of tennessee and kentucky. that will come in here late this afternoon through the evening hours. winter storm warning for counties off to the north and west, montgomery county, howard county, loudoun county, much of northern virginia, much. northwest maryland includes baltimore under a winter storm warning here in the washington area. it is a winter weather advisory. we will see snow. counties in pink, you will see more snow. your snow accumulation will likely be in addition to the snow we get this morning, maybe 6 inches when all is said and done. 33degrees at reagan national. 32 at dulles. cold enough for snow. cold enough for stick on the roadways. a little warmer to the south. fredericksburg, you are 36. even later today, these temperatures will cool and we'll expect snow some southern maryland. it might even make it down to ocean city later this afternoon if enough cold air can work itself into the system. there is your forecast for today. wintry mix changing to all snow later this afternoon. the worst of it will be around 4:00 this afternoon into the evening hours. we will get a break here before long. >> overnight temperatures tonight are going to be below freezing? >> they'll fall into the 20s. >> it will be a mess tonight but it is already a mess in a left places. i think for drivers it will be causing a lot of problems out there because the snow is already starting to stick. sarah simmons is live in rockville, maryland with a look at how things are there now. >> reporter: it has started to stick on 270. there were spots where maybe some of the plows hadn't gotten through quite yet that some of the areas were snow covered. it was difficult to see lanes. that is going to be an issue of visibility trying to get in. in areas where they had come through and been able to spread the salt down, traffic is moving pretty well. the side roads, this is what you will see is a lot of snow- covered areas. but it is a very wet snow too, very packable but also can make it very slick too. but we have noticed since we have been out here this morning that, just within the half hour, that it has started to change over as tucker had mentioned. it actually looks as though some of the snow as i look around is starting to kind of melt away a little bit. what is coming down has sort of started to change. i don't know if you can see this bouncing off my hands here. it seems to be a mix of snow and in some parts rain that is coming down and then some like little ice pellets coming down. they seem to be not -- they seem to be melting in some cases. sometime sticking. so it is kind of a weird combination at least where we are here in rockville. but definitely it will be an issue for folk driving on the side roads. it will be a slushy mess. in some areas, snow-covered so that will be a problem. the main like the interstates and those kind areas, we have seen as we have been out here and just one that passed just a bit ago was a snow plow as well and they have been out here spreading salt. they are out here in force working on the roadways. keep in mind as you head in this morning, it could be a slippery, slushy mess. we are live here in rockville. back to you in the studio. joining us on the phone with more, kim fromm from the highway administration. >> good morning. >> what does it looks like for the rest of the folk driving in maryland? >> the main line are looking pretty good. most everything is just wet. we are talking like the interstates of 495, i-95, # 70 where she just was. they are actually looking very good. crews are out and treating. we have over 200 crews in the immediate metro d.c. area to take care of things this morning. your secondaries and your neighborhood streets, that is where you want to show a little bit of extra caution as you are leaving to go to work or school providing you are not delayed with school closings or anything. effect else is moving along pretty well. we are paying special attention to the bridges, ramps and overpasses. >> the weather guys are talking about this being a two-part storm. how do you attack that? do you do more pretreating during the day today? >> the fact that -- we wouldn't be pretreating now because the event is actually happening. we did not do that yesterday because this was supposed to start as a rain event. if you pretreat, the rain will just wash everything away. we did not pretreat yesterday. crews have been out since about 3:00 this morning attacking it is roadways with plows and salt. we will maintain our operations through outthe day, sal where we need to and then for later this evening, we'll have a fresh set of crews in the truck ready to go and ready to tackle what is going to be happening later on this evening. >> all right, kim. thank you. we appreciate it. we'll talk to you again soon. >> all right. >> julie, we found out that the roads where sarah is in rockville, you know, starting to change a little bit to that slushy mess but i can you driving in from the west, it was quite difficult especially visibility. how are the rest of the roads looking? >> i think what we're seeing and tucker and sarah have hit the nail on the head is a change in the precipitation. when i came in about 45 minutes, and hour ago, it was big, white fluffy flakes coming out of gaithersburg headed into rockville. the left and right side of the roads along 270 had not been treat at that point so the road was down to two lanes. that is a different story now. we can see that from sarah's pictures and we heard from state highway so it is a different picture than what we had earlier this morning. we'll take you into the district off of canal road and foxhall road. for the most part, we are simply tealing with the wet pavement here. we do have reports that foxhall road is shut down south of nebraska avenue due to an accident there at hawthorne. be careful there. if you are traveling along wisconsin avenue out near nebraska, we do have the wet pavement. if you look through here, can you see we have a little accumulation of slush that is starting to form where the road has been treated. this will cause a lot of slick spots out there. that is why we want you to leave early and slow it down. back up into the germantown area, the secondary roads, some have been treated and give the crews time to get out there and do their thing. coming northbound on i-95, coming from the south, mainly just dealing with wet pavement as you travel northbound headed up towards the woodbridge area. dulles toll road, 28 for the crash. route 7 at the beltway for another accident. georgetown pike at walker road for the crash. it gives you an idea. we are dealing with slick conditions out on the roads. watch your speeds. make sure you have plenty of wiper fluid as well. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. you can count on >> last night, the president delivering his state of the union address. this morning, you can expect a lot of reaction to the speech. in that, mr. obama called on democrat and republicans to support federal funding in core core areas. he premoated spending in areas like education and transportation and promised reforms. he said the political leadership is now a, quote, shared responsibility. >> we may have different background but we believe in the same dream that says this is a country where anything is possible no matter who you are, no matter where you come from. >> all right. that was the state of the union last night. the big story today continues to be the weather. we are getting more school closings and delays in. we just found out that howard county and prince william county schools are closed today so you can add those to the list that is already up there. plenty more ahead on fox 5 morning news. the d.c. school voucher program could get new life. some want to phase out. some republicans want to revive the program. the big story, an all-day storm. some snow has fallen early. we have much more on the way. we'll check in with tucker and julie on the other side of the break.  there is a live look at the situation from our tower cam today. you can see the snowfall out there on the grassy areas. the roads light rite this look okay but some some spots, it will be slick out there. we are getting a lot of school closings today. >> maryland, montgomery county schools and prince george's county schools are closed and howard county schools are also closed. loudoun county and frederick county virginia schools are closed as are prince william county schools. in west virginia, grant, hampshire and mothering on counts -- and morgan county schools are close giant why. snow falling across the area. you are breaking it down. south and east, you might have school today. still raining for you down into current maryland but across the washington area, already a good band of snow now mixing getting some reports of snow and sleet falling across the district maybe mixing with a little rain. it is all snow off to the north and west and this is where we've got the winter storm warning. one-two combination here, first part this morning, sliding to the north and east. coastal low will be pulling off the low t will pull this upper level low. look at this big piece of energy become to the west. we'll get a bit of a break during the mid-morning into early afternoon. just a few light snow showers, a little bit of light rain. the main event arrives later this afternoon when this slams into the region. it will bring with it a lot of cold air and some pretty good snow rates later this afternoon. right now, 34 at reagan national. we've got sticking snow already across much of the area. off to the south and east, patuxent naval air station, you are 35 so a little better for you. here is your futurecast. 5:00 a.m., rain off to the south and east. that messy mix right across the 95 core are to and all snow off to the north and west. look what happens here. by noon, there is your break. look was developing off to the west. that slides in here just in time for the evening rush hour. really look out for the evening rush hour. 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 today, that snow will be working in west to east. it will be heavy at time during the evening hours and start to slide out by tonight. we are all getting snow even down into southern maryland down towards ocean city. it will change the snow for a time before we can get it out of here during the early- morning hours and by tomorrow, sunshine will return. we get to melt off what we pick up. how much snow are we talking about. we have a pretty good sense of this and winter storm warning off to the north and west. you will get the heaviest snow, 6 inches plus. more like 4 to 8 off to the north and west of the district. 3 to 6 to the south and east. off not north and west, it will be an all-snow event here in the darkest shade of purple. winter storm warning goes into effect later this morning. snow, rain changing to all snow this afternoon. snow likely. could be heavy at times particularly during the early evening hours. total accumulations, 3 to 8 inches. by this wound, temperatures in the 40s. 42degrees by sunday afternoon. -- by this weekend, temperatures in the 40s. 42degrees by sunday afternoon. slick roads out there on the highways. we heard from state highway. we know and understand that they've been out there treating the meteorologist -- those major arteries. accident activity reported southbound i-95 before you reach 36789 only one lane is able to get through at this time. secondary roads, still concerned with you as well. here we are coming inbound canal road toward foxhall road. mainly dealing with the wet pavement but we have a portion of foxhall road shut down south of nebraska avenue due to a crash. gw parkway south of 123 blocked off because of accident activity. some areas have been treated, some have not and a lot of areas, you are simply following the track of person in front of you. in some areas, big, white fluffy flakes are coming down. some some areas, the weather is changing. we went from big, white fluffy flakes to a mix. here we are at 108 at prince philip and a lot of slush is starting to accumulate between the lanes. pick the leap you need to be in and stick with it. allow extra time on the roads. can't emphasize enough the wiper fluid. what we are aseing north and west of town, downtown, mainly just wet pavement but again, bridges, ramps and overpasses freeze before anything else so watch your speed. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. new technology to keep us safe out there on the roads. we are wet out there and in some spots quite slick as we watch those temperatures hovering right around the freezing mark. we'll have much more on this snowstorm through out the morning. that is a grand on the highest part a sandbar in biscayne bay. nobody knows how that got there. officials say as long as it is not a navigational hazard, it will not be moved. we have smart phones and soon we'll have smart cars. seducing the same technology to keep us safe on the roads. >> fox 5 money reporter melanie alnwick hit the track with some ford engineers for a look at the cars of the future. >> reporter: two cars on a collision course but what could have been a fatal crash is stopped in its tracks. this is the future of intelligent vehicle technology. >> we are very excited about it because it uses two very low- cost technologies. >> reporter: the ford motor company has developed a fleet of prototype vehicle equipped with a system that allows them to talk to each other. >> your car who send out a little wireless message 10 time a second it all the cars around it that says here is my position, here is my speed, here is my brake status. >> reporter: unlike today's radar bessed systems which sense in one direction, the wi- fi gives 360-degree information. when one car gets too close to another, a warning goes off. the national highway traffic safety administration says vehicle to vehicle systems could help prevent more than four million crashes a year. a confederate technical expert and engineer showed us some of the moves. >> keep your eye on the vehicle ahead. we'll drive towards it. >> that is forward collision warning. there is also do not pass. >> right now, it is not safe because the passing zone is blocked and you would have a head-on collision. this is a deadly crash that we are trying to prevent. >> reporter: ford is working with other automakers to develop the system and make sure they all understand each other. industry and the federal government hope to bring howard county schools all closed this morning. >> in virginia, fairfax county schools are closed, loudoun, prince william and frederick county schools are closed too. clark ad warren county schools of your screen. that picture we showed from sarah simmons' camera, the fellow was shoveling the snow. >> it looked impressive. off to the south and east, it is just rain this morning. mick is right across the district here, the 95 corridor and it is all snow north and west. it will be all snow for most of us later this afternoon as we get the second part of this event. let's get right to it. i will show you hd radar. you can see what i'm talking about. it is a messy mix of snow, sleet and rain across the immediate washington area. that is what you see in pink there. that will be with us for the next couple of hours. rain not too far away. it is mostly just a rain event and off to the north and west, it is all snow and again, this will be the theme for the first part of the storm. the second part gets in later this afternoon. that has got a real cold chunk of air with it and it should cool down the atmosphere far enough that most of us will see all snow later today and that is what we're expecting the most widespread accumulation. this will lighten up. warning and watches, that is awe warning in pink. winter weather advisory in blue. that would include the district and points south and east. all of us will see snow. the heaviest snow will be in the winter storm warning region where they are expecting five inches plus. temperatures critical, of course. 4 at reagan national. 32 in winchester. 32 in baltimore, 30 in frederick. off to the north and west, these temperatures likely won't get above freezing all day long so anything that falls out of the sky throughout the day for you will be all snow. for rest of the us, snow-rain mix, changing to all snow later today. high temperature, you are looking at it. about 4 degrees and the worst it was will be about 5:00 or 6:00 tonight right through the evening hours. >> we we get a big break in between. >> it might be spritzing a little bit, a little snow or flurry activity. >> that fellow better get a bigger shovel for later today. let's go back out there to show you how things look in montgomery county. this is sarah simmons' live shot from rockville. maybe we can get some of this out of here and at least make the sidewalk walkable. you can see the crews out there on the roads as well. sarah simmons, how are the roads looking this morning? >> reporter: the roads are looking pretty good from where we stand. traffic is moving quite well. we've seen quite a few plows go by. where we are are also off the interstate, we are also in an area where you can see they have been shoveling off the sidewalk. we saw a couple of private contractors come through to deal with the asnow -- with the snow that is in the parking lots. what is left out her is a slushy, icy mess. this was all snow when we first pulled up. it is kind of icy, kind of slushy, very messy. it will be slick on the side roads. i know that they're out there on the interstates in force. we've kind of walked around and we can show you the interstates and how they are moving right now. moving at speed in many cases. this is southbound # 70. northbound, when we came in, it was a little bit snow-covered and still is even out here in some areas. we have quite a bit of snow. as it is turning to sleet, also snow that is coming down. it will just be quite a wet mess as you head out here this morning for the morning commute. of course, julie will have the latest on the traffic here in just a moment. but definitely a slick, messy commute this morning. take care and are very careful when you are out there. back to you in the studio. got some traffic cameras that we can show you the precipitation and it is coming down. we just spoke live with sarah simmons down in rockville down near the new harris teeter off of 270 and montrose road. this is what it looks like north of where she is. for you guys traveling along great seneca highway, 124 here, you can seat snow is falling. it is difficult through the camera shot. the snow is falling. we have problems with the roadway here where it has not been treated. you are dealing with the track of the person in front of you. that is causing issues there. if you are traveling in on 66, you will find by contrast, it is just wet pavement coming in from manassas. this is 28 darnestown road at 124, montgomery village avenue. the road has not been treated. you are following tracks. it is very difficult to see a lot of the lane markings because the overhead lights in some areas are not working. again, those big, white fluffy flakes in some areas, that is what you are encountering. by the time you hit the beltway, it is almost like a rain-sleet mix. by the time you hit 16th street off of georgia avenue, nothing at all. the wipers aren't even working. this gives you an idea of what you are waking up to this morning. i cannot emphasize enough wipe are fluid will be your best friend throughout the day. we do have accidents to report. dulles toll road for you guys coming inbound at 28. another crash on the toll road at route 7, this one in the airport lane. georgetown pike at walker road for the crash. we have accident activity southbound 95 at 32. only one this how about these 25-foot waves slamming into people in california. can you see the line of surfer ons on the top of that crest just as that wave breaks and then forget it. everybody is in trouble. one of the surfers actually almost drowned but is okay. a photographer grabbed him and pulled him up to the surface. he is in the hospital. >> like dropping out of a third story window. pretty amazing stuff. tuck being back to that shot of fairfax. if you look at the temperature now, 34 degrees. it looks like we're flirting with the freezing mark. >> he will be throughout the day. early this morning, we cooled off the roadway very quickly so we got a nice little coating of snow out there. a lot to talk about. let's get to it. steve mentioned the mix in fairfax. you will be able to see it here. the pink you see is a mix of snow. we've got reports of sleet and some rain falling across the area. and in places where temperatures are at or below 32, it is possible some of that will freeze so look out for the possibility of freezing rain. i think the real concern here is the snow that will be redeveloping during of the course of the afternoon as this is not main event being believe it it or not. this is our preliminary storm. off to the south and east, it is just rain. no concerns for you in the immediate future but later today, you will get snow. here that is mixed mess right across the 95 corridor. 66 right through the beltway and then up 95 and then it is all snow off to the north and west. you get up into lise biewrg and frederick, it is all snow for you. let's move on, take a look at temperatures. they are right around the freezing mark. -- you get up into leesburg and frederick, it is all snow for you. some of that rain out there will freeze during the next couple of hours. this really does a nice job showing you how the day will shape up. this is the preliminary event. it is a two-part system. the first part gets through here over the next couple of hours. it will be out of here by 8:00, 9:00 this morning. we'll get a bit of a break for the late morning hours. the real event gets in here later this afternoon. this system, as it gets in, this upper level low means business. lots of cold air associated with it. it looks like it will work in from west to east. likely, we'll see bands and moderate if not heavy snow developing around here at 4:00 or 5:00 tonight. that evening rush hour will be very messy. eventual will you, it pushes far enough south and east and brings enough cold air in, it turns over to snow even in southern maryland before it all gets out. here after midnight tonight. the real event later this afternoon, most of the accumulating snow won't get in here until mid- to late afternoon. if it is raining at your house right now and you think we're done with it, we're not. the main event a little later today. how much snow are we expecting? the current line of thinking is 3 to 6 inches in the immediate area. as you get off to the north and west, it will be 8, 9 inches where it will be snow all day. lesser amounts to the south and east where it will be mixed with rain and sleet for a good part of the day. even you too will eventually get some snow later this afternoon, tonight as that upper level low travels right across the washington area with a lot of moisture. here is your forecast. snow and rain, chaining to all snow late. if you are north and west, it will be snow for you throughout day. 34 the daytime high. we're right there now. winter weather advisory, winter storm warnings continue tonight. snow likely could be heavy at times. the worst of it likely to be about 6:00, 7:00 tonight. 3 to 8 inches plus. anything that falls will freeze out there on the surfaces for tomorrow morning. we get it out of here early becoming breezy during the day with highs in the mid-30s. could be a few flurries early friday morning and then some clouds around with a little clipper system. that is very weak, in the a big concern and into the low 40s for saturday sand. that is a look at the forecast. julie wright has your latest. >> slick road conditions. accidents just about everywhere out there on the highway. here we go. we are starting off along northbound i-95 coming bound i should say. 175 headed out towards 3 32, the road completely shut down with accident activity. crash now reported inner loop of the beltway. that is coming southbound 95- 295 at 20 #. inbund on the dulles toll road at 28 and then close in dulles toll road at route 7, accident activity in the airport lanes blocking the right lean. in the main line, you lose the left lane. outer loop of the beltway, new hampshire avenue for the crash. that is what is tying up the left side of the highway. again, snow continues to fall. this is what it looks like darnstown road at 124. some areas the road has not been treated as you can clearly see. you are simply following the fraks of the person in front of you. although the major arteries have been treated, in a left areas, you are dealing with wet pavement. again, plenty of gas in the task, wiper fluid. you will need. it the wipers will be doing double duty all day long. wizards prepare to hit the long and winding road on the heels of another loss. caps try to get back in the win column and a blast from the nfl past may be making a comeback. joining us this morning, the sports junkies from 106.7 the fan on this wednesday morning. the wizards losing once again. now, they are hitting the road for four straight. my question as we are more than halfway into the season with a whopping 13 wins being john wall, this way about halfway through the year, 15 points, nine assists per game. is he performing where you think he would perform. >> i think he is doing about what he is expected to do. as a rookie, i don't think you have any issues. is he a great shooter? no. but the wizards knew that. >> the only issue has been his ability to stay healthy. he missed a large chunk of games early on. they probably could have won a road game or two early on that they didn't have him. >> i think he has performed well. >> i think to average nine assists on the wizards is a
