Hurricane sandy has left a devastating path in cuba and haiti, and is barreling through the bahamas. Officials say 21 people are dead in the carribean as a result of the storm, including 11 in cuba. Now the east coast is prepping for what forecasters have dubbed the frankenstorm. It is around halloween. It is expected to hit here in the next few days bringing high winds, heavy rain, possibly snow in some part. Dangerous weather predicted from florida to new york city and as far west as ohio. Power crews in our area are preparing for the worst. Pepco and bge say they are planning for 100,000 outages or more and have hundreds of crews on standby. Fox5s sherri ly is in Prince Georges County live to give us the latest on the preparations. Sherri, you just got to cross your fingers in this for us, but theyre working to make us feel a little better. Reporter they are, allison and tony. Right now you can may see this snow plow behind me. Prince george countys crews were in this morning to do a preplanned dry run for their snow plans this winter. But now they find themselves in the midst of preparing for Hurricane Sandy at the same time. This is a storm that has the potential to cause widespread damage throughout the aa, even without a direct hit. Joining me now is susan hubbard, spokesman for the department of public works. How are your crews preparing today while theyre out on this snow run . Good morning. As you said, we are on our annual snow and ice dry run. And it just happens that the hurricane has been forecast. What we have asked our crews to do while theyre out there familiarizing themselves with their routes is to look to the roadways to see if theres any problems that could cause flooding, to check the storm drains to make sure theyre clear, that theres no debris, no leaves or anything down there, and we will ask folks whatever you do, please dont rake leaves down the storm drain. Theyre looking at the trees to make sure that theres not a problem with the wires. Were working with the electric companies, Utility Companies to make sure trimming is done prior to as much as possible. Prince georges county has been monitoring and conducting Conference Calls and theres one at 9 00 this morning to go over the latest forecast. At that time, from that forecast, theyll determine how much staff has to come in and exactly what time they have to come in. Reporter they are calling this the frankenstorm because this is really expected to be a monster of a storm. Tell us what plans are already in place as far as notifying workers, putting people on standby and starting to get those resources in place. The county has been doing that since the first notification of the storm, and as you know and the folks out there who are watching know, it can be projected to be a horrendous storm and veers and goes away. So it makes it a little bit precarious for us to know exactly when it bring staff. Staff is on standby now. They know theyll have to come in. For those members of staff from the different agencies who have to come in, there is a system that is utilized and they are well aware of that. We will bring in and we will for instance the department of public works and staff is preassigned to the six pumping stations we have. They are already preassigned to their routes to ensure what they need to ensure to make it as safe and keep it safe. We have tree crews, not only our staff, but tree crews on call should a tree go down in the roadway to remove it. I think one of the most important things we could ask folks, if the storm does hit us, please, unless its absolutely necessary, stay home. Prior to the storm go out, get your groceries, get your medicine, get your batteries, make sure your generators, if you have a generator, is ready to roll. Make sure if you have a sump pump you have a battery backup pack. And in Prince Georges County, they can be notified through notify me at Prince Georges County. Theyll get notifications of whats going on. Also, if its not an emergency, call 311. Reporter great. Helpful advice here from susan hubbard. Again, they are getting ready here. They are also asking people out there to get ready as this storm makes its way up the east coast. Thats the latest in Prince Georges County. Back to you. Thank you very much. Stay with fox 5 as we track this potential super storm. You can follow the storms path on myfoxhurricane. Com. You can have the storm forecast with you wherever you go. Up next, a closer look at what we can expect. As we take you to the break, a live look at Fort Lauderdale, florida, where the surf is kicked up from Hurricane Sandy. Were going to get the latest on its forecast track and talk with the National Weather service about the super storm and get an update on friday traffic from julie wright. Its all coming up next. Were back with a check of this mornings big sports headlines. The San Francisco giants are halfway to a world series title. They shut out the Detroit Tigers 20 in game two. 14 of the last 15 teams that have won the first two games have won the world series. Today is a travel day. The series resumes tomorrow night in detroit. Detroit was only shut out twice during the season. Is that true . Wow. Then shut out last night. Giants seem to have the magic going. I think theyre going to win it. Looking that way. Well see. I was rooting for the lions. Why do i keep doing that . Lions, tigers, bears oh my. Whatever. Okay. Detroit is a great team. Lets get the forecast and talk sandy. Im not sure do we gotta . Nobody is rooting for sandy. Nobody is. Theres your latest. Ill show you the information on it. But i want you to notice a couple of features with it. Not as strong as it was 24 hours ago. Yesterday we had that eye structure. Today, none of that. Encountering a lot of wind shear. Though this is forecast to keep that center circulation intact, likely to weaken over the near term as it pushes off to the north and west. At least thats a little good news. Lets go to the latest with sandy. Hurricane sandy as of 5 00 a. M. , maximum winds 80 Miles Per Hour. Gusts 90, 95. Winds moving to the north and west at 13. Pressure up a little bit over night. 968millibars. Theyve been tweaking this track, and unfortunately the track is looking less and less favorable with every run. Im going to show you why at the end of the time period. Let me emphasize again, today, tomorrow, no issues. Most of sunday no issues. The main event would arrive and tuesday, wednesday. Energized, weve been talking the frankenstorm, energized with this cool air to the west could create a very serious storm situation around here monday and tuesday. That includes gusty winds, torrential rains. Some of the rain forecasts even in washington for 5 to 6 inches of rain. That would fall at a quick pace. We have a lot to be concerned monday and tuesday. Here its 63 in washington. 61 in leonardtown. Forecast for today is fine. Accu weather sevenday, the focus is monday, tuesday for the worst of it. And a lot could still happen. And i think were going to talk to some people out at the Weather Service site in a minute. A lot could happen. Not set in stone, the track. I appreciate on that seven day you dont have, yikes, and omg for those two days. Im saving that. Still look pretty normal. Thank you. Lets go to julie wright. Thats what im saying, julie. Me, too, julie. It has been busy out here. Montgomery county, accident activity aat connecticut avenue. Follow Police Direction. Southbound along 270, slow traffic approaching route 80. Doesnt improve continuing further south to gaithersburg, but at the lane divide back up to 42 Miles Per Hour. There has been some change as you continue southbound along 270. Delays now southbound on kenilworth avenue to 18 Miles Per Hour, heading south towards the exit for pennsylvania avenue youll find inbound on route 50 below speed from 410 to bladensburg road. Lanes are open continuing along the beltway, between college park and bethesda. This is westbound approaching i 97 with accident activity on the right and left shoulder. Thats a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. Thanks, julie. Lets get back to the conversation about the possible super storm. Shaping up to be major weather systems. Were going bring in Brian Jackson with the National Weather service in sterling, our local field office. Hes going to join us on the phone now. Good morning, brian, are you there . Good morning, i am here. What is the latest on all of this . A lot of people worried about this one, bryan. Yeah. Were looking at potentially quite a situation here, with the hurricane coming up sunday night, east of Cape Hatteras and making a turn to the northwest and yeah, i think in the forecast you saw that the forecast is for it to make landfall in the midatlantic early next week. Bryan, im familiar, like you are, im sure, with Tropical Storms. Ive never seen a hurricane track quite like the one thats forecast with sandy. Do you think that that will verify . Are we getting more confident this will happen . Well, its the other aspects that are causing that, its this weve currently got a cold front over the midwest. Theres a large trough of low pressure that will be coming across the u. S. , and those that large trough will merge with the hurricane and essentially its that merging that is causing that turn to the northwest. So its a pretty unique situation. Most of the times hurricanes moving along the eastern seaboard will go straight north, and it is pretty rare to get a landfall into this area. Bryan, is it possible that the cold front that were seeing to the west could be Strong Enough to steer this storm further out to sea . Usually theres, you know, a trough or things like that will deflect. But theres different orientations of the trough. In this case, its what we call negatively tilted, its tilted from the northwest to the southeast. That will actually draw the system in. So theres increasing confidence that yeah, we will see a merger of the two, whats known as a fading. Lets talk about some of the effects of sandy around here by monday afternoon. What kind of winds could we be looking at in the metro area . Weve been talking about uncertainty this whole time. Coming to a better consensus on, as far as where its going to be and where were looking at a landfall now. Essentially from the delmarva, maybe to the southern new england coast. High winds, in excess of 50, 60 Miles Per Hour. Once again, this is all potential. And combined with heavy rain. So its the high winds and the real flooding rains are the big impacts for the inland areas. Bryan, one quick question, the other thing ive noticed this would last for several days. This one will stick around, right . Yeah. As it does this phasing, this merging, it gets all wrapped up and yeah, were looking at at least some of the remnants, one of the models takes it basically to next weekend. So yeah, were looking at kind of a long system. Fortunately, it will weaken once its over land and lose its tropical characteristics. Bryan jackson is a meteorologist with the National Weather service in sterling, virginia. Thank you, sir, for spending some time with us this morning. And well talk to you again im sure. All right. Be prepared. Thank you, you, too. All right, bye. Dont like it. I dont feel any better. Feel a little worse, actually. Im mitt romney and i approve this message. Welcome back, everybody. Weve been talking about the campaigns, 11 days before we go to the polls. Everybody has an opinion, even barbie. Barbie . Check out barbie. She was the b party, i believe. She is the candidate . Running . Shes running. Mattel makes barbie, they say basically there are no women in the race, so theyre putting barbie in the race. Oh. Running for president . Do we know her platform or anything . I dont think we do. As tony mentioned, here is her campaign can see them on the back. Got a pink wig on. Maybe not a serious campaign. This is cool. Barbie stands on her own, literally, because she stands up on her own out of the box. She does . Thats not something all barbies do. Stands on her own, and says, literally. And she has on wedges, not stilettos. Thats important if youre running for office. Stilettos take a toll on your feet. I dont know the difference. Should i . I dont think so. Good for her. Tucker has a lot of information for us about the weather, which today, not so bad. Not so bad around here. Well talk local forecast in a second. This is a live shot out of Fort Lauderdale. Theyre getting rough surf. I have an uncle that lives down there and says he doesnt have power. Already . What . For a good 10 hours and he said the storm surge was causing flooding locally. Even florida has Tropical Storm warnings and watches up and down the coast now. Could be scary. Are you seriously thinking about giving her your vote . I was seeing if she was the b party. We came back on camera, which we dont often do when you start talking. 63 in washington now. 63 annapolis. Tony mentioned not a bad one day. Much like yesterday, Morning Cloud cover. Got the fog. Once we get that, get that burned off a little bit, a little bit of sunshine this afternoon. 61 leonardtown. 59 in winchester. 59 frederick as well. Temperatures relatively cool. Highs today about 70 degrees. Plenty of time to prepare for what will eventually be sandy and this hybrid frankenstorm late sunday and monday and tuesday. Theres the gray, thats the maritime layer, the low fog. Not very thick, but enough to give us clouds to start the day. Should see that burn off later this afternoon. This front, thats a big player in our weather, we talked to the forecaster in sterling and he mentioned the negative tilt. Behind that front will be a big piece of energy helping trap this Tropical Storm and pull it towards the mid atlantic. Thats the latest look at sandy. Notice its not looking as impressive as 24 hours ago. Pretty good winds in the upper atmosphere pulling at it in many different directions. Core of circulation will stay intact likely, but will lose some strength as it pushes north later today, so thats good news. Lets talk about the bigger picture, and the possible track of the storm. Looks like it will track to the northnortheast, and as i mentioned, will get pulled back towards the Washington Area as we get into the sunday night, monday time frame. Lets take a look at futurecast and decent job of showing what will take place. Later tomorrow, here comes the cold front, that will energize the system. Could give us a few showers late tomorrow. Moving up the coast saturday and sunday. Here we are sunday at 1 00, rain showers around. Heavier rain to the east. Lower Eastern Shore, heavier rain. Main event still several hours away. That will continue to track up towards the Washington Area. Things get much more interesting by early monday morning. Well have heavy rain, and here are some of the impact, beach erosion, did i mention monday is a full moon . Will exacerbate problems with flooding along the tidal basin and of course atlantic ocean. Power outages almost a guarantee and potential for flooding rain. Looking at the last guidance here, maybe 5 to 8 inches of rain. 71 today. Early clouds and fog, afternoon sun. Winds out of the east at 5. Accu weather sevenday forecast, 68 tomorrow. And monday, tuesday, thats the time frame were going to put a question mark, again, that track not set in stone. Much could still happen. If it hits, monday, tuesday time frame, that will be the worst of it. Lets do traffic and get the latest from julie wright. Good morning. Busy ride here on the highways this morning. Lets get to it. Traveling southbound along kenilworth avenue, heavy slow and steady getting past eastern continuing towards pennsylvania avenue. All lanes are open. Southbound 270, still congested on the top stretch down to about 21 Miles Per Hour. Heading southbound to the accident, tying up the right side of the highway. South of shady grove and rockville the pace improves. Inner loop, slow start from springs field, 20 minutes at this point. This is volume delays. Volume delays eastbound on 66. By the time you reach the beltway, up to 60 Miles Per Hour with all lanes open. Thats a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. Thank you. Expect to see more women getting out the vote. A vast majority of women voters still undecided and both candidates are paying close attention to that. A recent gallup poll shows women in key swing states have gender specific priorities. What does this mean . Professor jennifer lawless with American University joins us, where shes also the director of women and politics institute. Nice to see you. We were having a little fun with the barbie, but the truth of the matter is, women are more important than ever it appears in this election cycle. Where are we now as far as what issues seem to be important to women voters . There are two things going on. The first is that they are important. They are more likely to be registered to vote and turn out to vote than men. And their population percentages suggests they are the majority of the electorates. In every president ial election since 1980 and all Congressional Elections since 1986 women have been more likely than men to support the democratic candidate. President obama needs to exploit that if he wants to win, and mitt romney needs to mitigate it if he wants to win. It seems that the president enjoyed quite a gap as far as that women vote, and recently, perhaps when the debates started or around the same time, we saw that gap narrow quite a bit. Can you explain that . Its somewhat perplexing. My assessment is it has to do with what im calling absence makes the heart grow fonder phenomenon. After the first debate womens issues werent talked about at all. Following the second debate, the gap reemerged a little bit, because so much attention was on womens issues. The third debate was about foreign policy. Women were not really fully integrated into that debate, womens issues werent in that debate and it moved away. Some of this has to do with gender setting and what women and men are being told to think about. Interesting. There was a poll taken in 12 of those key swing states, and thats the other key player, the swing states, and it showed a different story as far as what women care about and what men care about. Number one on that was abortion with 39 of women coming in saying that thats what they consider the most important issue for women in this election. Jobs at 19 . Health care 18 . Economy 16 , equal rights, pay and opportunity. Abortion doesnt show up on the men, and equal opportunity didnt show up as a priority. What can we learn from that, and if this is the case, who should be ahead now . Its a little bit confusing, because those questions were open ended. So people were just asked what do you think is the most important issue facing the country . Its not that surprising that in swing states women said abortion and equal rights, because the candidates, democrats in particular, have been doing so much to prime them to assess other candidates, both romney and barack obama, according to that issue. When asked about other five issues, unemployment, foreign affairs, we dont see the gender differences we see when asked that open ended question. So barack obama is leading on womens issues. The key for him is make sure these women continue to prioritize abortion, equal rights and get out to the polls. Ive seen effective ads as far as governor romney goes, the latest was a high ranking women within his cabinet, and just really speaking plainly, you know, basically i know mitt romney, i support mitt romney. How effective is Something Like that . Its certainly not ineffective. And its important for this small segment of swing voters who are women in these swing states. But the things to keep in mind is that where mitt romney can have surrogates on the campaign trail who say he did good things for women, barack obama has a record he can point to. At the end of the day its going to be a question of whether female voters are more inclined to buy the symbolism or the substance. Always a pleasure when you come in. I enjoy it so much. Well check in with tucker and julie in just a moment. But first we continue to track Hurricane Sandy and its potential to join forces with an east coast storm. Now as you can see here, the storm, category 1 storm is moving towards the bahamas. It is creating Tropical Storm conditions along parts of the southeastern u. S. Coast. Even though sandy has lost some power, its wreaking havoc on the carribean. The chance of the socalled super storm could happen looks more ominous by the hour. The combination of high winds, heavy rain, extreme tides and snow in some places could have devastating consequences, possibly totaling at least 1 billion in damage. For more on the when and where this storm could hit, we turn to tucker barnes. Thanks, tony. Lets get you the latest information. The sort of traditional Tropical Storm signature we would see is starting to fall apart. Its undergoing a transition now. The wind field has been growing by the hour and that will be a big player in our forecast as we get into the end of the weekend and early next week. Still a category 1 hurricane. Im getting the update here, now moving off to the north and west at 10 Miles Per Hour. Maximum winds 80 Miles Per Hour. The pressure up to 970 millibars. That advisory just coming in here a few moments ago. Where will it track . Looks like it will go north and eventually heres what is amazing, because we havent seen this a lot in our hurricane history, looks like it will get pulled inland here as we get into the monday, tuesday time frame. This is the official hurricane track put out by the National Hurricane center. Will park over the Washington Area tuesday afternoon, early wednesday, and not favorable scenario for us. Extremely gusty winds, hours and hours of rain. We would have major issues with storm surge, unfortunately the full moon is monday night, and that would exacerbate problems. Bottom line, this storm needs to be carefully watched. Still got that cone of uncertainty. We have to watch the storm here as we get into the end of the weekend. Monday, tuesday the primetime even here with sandy. Temperatures now, 63 in washington. Let me mention, no problems today, if you want to get some supplies, that kind of thing. No issues at all. 71, afternoon sun. Allison, thats the latest. Back to you. Thank you. Our Team Coverage of Hurricane Sandy continues with sherri ly live where prince georges road crews are preparing for whatever Mother Nature has in store. Reporter good morning. Road crews here in Prince Georges County are actually out on the streets now, looking for any potential problems before Hurricane Sandy should arrive. These road crews were already due in this morning for a preplanned snow drill, but now they find themselves on hurricane duty, too. As the snow plows hit the streets throughout the county for a dry run this morning, crews with the department of public works are checking storm drains for blockages and trees could pose a hazard. The command center is keeping an eye on the storm. It is a monster storm thats already being felt along parts of the east coast. The hurricane dubbed the frankenstorm because of the combination with the winter storm moving in, could cause catastrophic damage. As the hurricane moves closer in the coming days, emergency planners across the region are making contingency plans. Prince georges county has been aware of the forecast, has been monitoring it, has been conducting Conference Calls and in fact theres one at 9 00 this morning to go over the latest forecast. At that time, theyll determine how much staff has to come in and what time they have to come in. Reporter it is still hard to predict how significant the damage will be. But if past hurricanes are any indication, we could be looking at major flooding and massive power outages. Millions of customers could lose power after this hurricane. Here in Prince Georges County, too, theyre also looking at possible flood damage during hurricane irene last year, the county administrative building in Upper Marlboro had significant damage from flooding. So now they have these inflatable sand bags that they have ready to deploy if flooding becomes a problem. Thats the latest here in forestville, back to you. Thank you. Included among those senators, portman of ohio. Will come down to about a half dozen states that are ground zero and one of them is virginia. Its great to have portman on, because i say all eyes on the swing state, but more and more eyes on ohio. Thats right. Youre talking about 18 electoral votes. And romney can win without winning ohio, but somebody said he wouldnt want to. Hed have to pick up a bunch of other states. I think whoever wins ohio will be the next president. The candidates are spending it seems all their time at this point in the swing states, which we understand. Is that a mistake now . Should they be going to other places, too . Its interesting, because theres talk about michigan maybe coming into play, and looks like it would be reliablebly obama, but romney is gaining there and in pennsylvania. It may be youre close, but if you spend a lot of money there, dont win there and also dont win in a place where if you had just focused on it, you could have won. Its an interesting choice these guys have to make, and they have so many chess pieces they can put on the board. I think the other interesting thing about the fact you have mark warner on the show, hes featured in some of the ads for tim kaine and thats a race people are watching closely. Absolutely. As romney is doing better, and i dont know if hell win or not, but clearly hes got the momentum, for instance in virginia, in the last fox news poll, he was down, romney was down seven. Now hes up 2. Starting to lose tropical characteristics, but the wind field is getting bigger and bigger here, and i think, remember the dor acho that came through in june . Still have circulation there. The storm looking more impressive. Pretty good wind shear at this hour. Theres another picture. Pushing off to the north and east and will be moving towards the Washington Area the end of the weekend. Want to show you the wind field. Watch it work up the coast. Where you get the tight isobars, thats where the strongest winds are. Notice by early monday morning, forecasting strong winds off our southeast coast here. Lower Eastern Shore could be dealing with serious beach erosion. Then moves inland basically on top of us by monday night, early tuesday. Its tapping into that cold air and thats why were concerned with the super storm. Lots of questions still need to be answered with it. Potential for a lot of wind and rain around here monday and tuesday. Theres your accu weather seven day. Monday, tuesday, lots of question marks.
