Sue palka is tracking the storms for us. Yeah, these are strong storms, particularly for this late at night in the middle of october. Straight to radar, we have some warning, reports of hail. Theres an awful lot of lightning. Going to get you in closer because there are two areas im watching in particular. Right around the leesburg area and reston, youre not warned for these storms, but theyre producing very heavy rain and down to our south we know theres going to be a little bit more. You can see some of these yellow areas down toward the culpeper area. Lets get in tighter on sentinel radar because i want you to see that this one is moving northeast at 40 and now we have severe thunderstorm warnings in yellow, thats culpeper, madison in orange until 11 45. I think it might get extended maybe moving into Fauquier County in the next little while. These have large updrafts. That tells us theyre capable of producing hail maybe quarter size and they could produce gusts to 60 miles an hour. Youll be able to see this storm has been intensifying in the last hour and theres plenty f lightning, too. That extends up into montgomery county. Bottom line, expect to have thunderstorms off and on throughout the night, a strong cold front throughout the west swinging through later tonight and the morning commute fight feature showers and maybe might feature showers and maybe a little fog. Officer kevin bowden died when his cruiser collided with an suv and a sedan in clinton. It is the second time in two months a Prince Georges County Police Officer has died in a car crash. Fox 5s Audrey Barnes joins us now with the latest. The police chief says 28 yearold officer bowden was on duty off duty driving his cruiser when the crash happened. Witnesses say a car trying to avoid a tour bus may have cut him off and his cruiser wound up wrapped around a utility pole. 28yearold officer kevin pow den got off work at 1 p. M. Bowden got off work at 1 p. M. And within hours he was dead. Police say the sixyear veteran was off duty headed northbound on brent avenue when his vehicle collided with an suv at is are rats road at surrats road, a collision so violent his vehicle was nearly sliced in two by the utility pole. As a result of that collision, the cruiser was forced into a utility pole. He was transportedded here to the hospital where he succombed to his injuries. Reporter officers from departments all over the state rushed to the Southern Maryland hospital have to comfort each other just like they did two months ago when the department lost officer Adrian Morris in a crash on i95. He and his partner were chasing some theft suspects when the cruiser crashed. All my members are basically hurting trying to heal through this process, trying to wrap their heads around what took place and get an understanding of how this happened. Reporter although its still early in the investigation, police say another vehicle may have changed lanes to avoid a tour bus and collided with the officers cruiser. Its very possible. We have witnesses saying that the officer was cut off and were not at a point yet to say thats what caused the accident, but certainly were looking into that. Reporter members of officer bowdens squad are having a tough time. In the words of one, not another good officer lost. Its just too soon after the last one. And i just ask that the community please keep or everyone please keep the Police Department and this community in your prayers. Another big story tonight, the fbi is questioning a man accused of tossing a molotov cocktail into the food court at lunchtime in arlington. Fox 5s bob barnard is following this one. Reporter he targeted the food court at Boston Common mall on wilson boulevard in arlington just after noon thursday. Witnesses tell investigators a man threw a 48 beer bottle with a lit fuse and a liquid that smelled like gasoline down into the food court from an upper floor. The makeshift firebomb shattered but did not ignite or explode. It was a rude crude incendiary device. It was nothing sophisticated about it whatsoever. Reporter Arlington County Police Say Three similar devices were found in a bag on the second floor of the mall, but the suspect had run off. He was found and arrested at gunpoint three hours later eating lunch in the pedestrian mall at Courthouse Plaza a couple miles east of the crime scene. He was just eating at Cheesecake Factory and he didnt offer any resistance, nor did he cooperate. Reporter andrew mccareys coworker shot this cell phone video of the arrest, the suspect wearing a dark sweat shirt, white dress shirt and red tie. Thankfully he was very inept. Unfortunately thats the reality we live in is you have to look out for independent actors rather than state terrorism. A surprising turn today in the trial of two Prince Georges County Police Officers accused of assaulting a university of maryland student. A mistrial was nearly declared. A Law Enforcement source tells fox 5 judge Beverly Woodard met in chambers with prosecutors and defense lawyers after a reporter discovered the judge had been previously married to a Police Officer who was convicted of excessive force. The reporter wanted to know why the judge didnt recuse herself. She explained to the lawyer she believed she could oversee a case in a fair and impartial way and so the trial is continuing. As fox 5s paul wagner reports, earlier today one of the officers took the stand in his own defense. Reporter under questioning from his defense attorney officer James Harrison said he first saw john mckenna about 45 seconds before his codefendant officer Reginald Baker hit the student with his shield sending hill into a wall. Harrison told the court he saw mckenna hit baker on his helmet while holding a cell phone in his hand. He was concerned about his cell phone because hed received bulletins saying that firearms could be disguised as cell phones. Harrison said he told mckenna to drop it and hit him seven to eight times. Did you strike him in the head asked his defense attorney . Harrison replied never. When asked by prosecutor joseph ruddy why he lied to internal affairs claiming he wasnt one of the striking officers seen in the video, harrison replied it was for financial reasons. Hes the father of eight children and the sole breadwinner in his family and he was afraid of losing his job. The trial is expected to wrap up tomorrow with closing arguments and then the jury will get the case. The revelation comes as family members of the suspect insist he is innocent. Foxs David Lee Miller is in new york now with the very latest. Reporter accused terror suspect 21yearold quasi nafis had his sights set on president obama before choosing to attack the Federal Reserve, that according to a Law Enforcement official speaking to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The official said nafis considered targeting the commander in chief and the New York Stock Exchange before settling on his target blocks from the World Trade Center site. The official stresses nafis never got beyond the discussion stage in contemplating an attack on the president. Nafis was nabbed after he tried detonating a car bomb outside the building which was a fake planted by undercover agents. Reporter at least 30 of the arrests were made today and the sweep included a search warrant executed at this dollar depot on richmond highway in fairfax where police were investigating counterfeiting of dvds, cds, handbags and other merchandise. Fairfax county police teamed up with police from Prince William county and the Virginia State police. The joint criminal Intelligence Team targeted what they called problematic areas along the richmond highway stretching from fairfax down into Prince William. Stolen property seized included electronics, jewelry, credit cards. They also confiscated a large quantity of prescription and nonprescription drugs. The same individuals that were committing crimes in Prince William county were the same individuals that were committing crimes obviously in Fairfax County. Obviously the criminals dont respect the boundaries just like the police would as far as where we have jurisdiction. This has been a lengthy investigation, but theyve used ingenuity, a mix of traditional and nontraditional tactics and i just commend how much they cared and how much theyve sought to arrest bad guys, arrest offenders and keep our communities collectively.
