And so far, residents say they are trying to balance the decision of staying with their home or staying away from the water. You have to take the flood serious. The evacuations that were ordered affected several hundred people in the citys historic district. The mayor of laurel said he could change that order to a mandatory order tonight. We were watching the waterline, quite frankly. As more waters dump, it could cause us more concern and more issues and that could be a determination. Were going to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Reporter all right, what we wanted to do here is to show you exactly how this is encouraged throughout the day. Were standing right now, and you see that orange warning soon over there where there were some phone lines. The area between where we are right now and where that sign was, that was all grass at about 1 00 this afternoon. Reporter well, one of the things i ran into, will, they called this at 10 00 today. And a lot of people were at home at 10 00 and that were out at work and their jobs. Right now, the folks are coming home and when theyre seeing are signs tucked into the handles and screen doors advising them of the fact that this is voluntary right now and that does not seem at this point, were looking at some of the homes not far from us and that that water is going up the streets. This could be a different situation as the evening goes on and we have seen probably about, you know, 25 feet of water get up to our spot in the last couple of hours. So, they are taking this seriously tonight. And its happening fast, clearly. Well continue to monitor the situation out there in laurel. Tom fitzgerald, thank you. And lets check in with gary now for more on the Current River levels in our area. What sort of problems could this release of water cause . Reporter well, one of the biggest problems, shawn, you saw it there behind tom. What happens in a controlled release like this, theyre going to release it and as slow as thcan. What theyre trying to keep from happening is flash flooding. If you get a situation like what we saw with tom, where that debris is right in the way of a bridge and acts like another dam, and that starts causing problems and more flooding in places that they didnt expect it to happen and the good new here is no more rain for awhile. We dont want anything coming our way, not like last night and look at the corridor of heaviest rains here through loudoun county, Montgomery County and to tower county and farther to the northnortheast and the rain amounts, two to three to four inches of rain last night, what is causing this issue, the expecting a is that the patuxent will stop rising. The good new here is with this controlled release, they wont have to do yet much longer. Hopefully by later tonight and into the leave night, well see the river levels coming down and what Everyone Wants to see. Be careful, especially between laurel and bowie and by no means, certainly dont drive across the water and that wont take much to swoop you away. Okay . And thank you. Dr. Joshua cohen, an endocrinologist at George Washington hospital joins us now to hopefully answer our questions. You that for be with us. Youre welcome. What is it . Is it derived from deer antlers . I understand that its called, for those who are in the know about this, its igf 1, or the insulinlike growth factors. We understand the makers say it shouldnt be banned. It has a lot of health benefits. They claim everything from healthy joints to enhancing sex drive and reducing belly fat. On the sorry face, it sounds like a miracle drug. The question s it safe . Igf1 is a hormone, a small protein and made naturally in your body. People make it mostly in their liver and other places as well, and it has a role in normal growth and possibly in promoting muscle growth as well as possibly promoting some forms of healing and relief from inflammation and it certainly has a normal role, and we all have appropriate igf 1 levels, but the issue is that as is the case for other banned substances, growth hormone, androgen look testosterone, when its used, it has affects in terms of yet may have affect in terms of muscle growth or enhancing performance and things like that, from which the set of organized sports is not appropriate. Lastly, are there any real benefits . You said it may help with muscle healing and growth. What about the other benefits the maker claims . Reporter think there are two pieces is to to this. Igf1 is available as a pharmaceutical pressure rage. Its preparation. Its for the treatment of an extremely rare condition. There are a small number of individuals who actually are deficient in igf1, in the ability to make igf1 and it has benefits for them in terms of growth. The broader issue n terms of what the manufacturer is claiming for igf1 is not well substantiated and, furthermore, whether or not individuals actually get any doses of igf1 from the products being sold is another, you know, great uncertainty. And it does seem weird, spraying it and healing the muscles inside. All right, dr. Joshua cohen, endocrinologist with George Washington university hospital, thank you for coming in. Youre welcome.
