Tonight roughly 75 people gathered marching through the streets to have their voices heard. They say they want people to understand that everyone matters. We will not stand for the misogyny. We wont stand for the homophobia. We have fought too hard to progress this much as a country in the 200 years we have been a country. The rules of the road are changing. Ridesharing companies can now legally operate in hillsborough county. But it also opens up competition. Reporter the chairman negotiated the deal with the companies a you. It requires a background check on drivers. They also have to carry additional insurance and have their car suspected every year. The commissioner said this is a big deal because our area may forecast the future of these companies. The new regulations might spark statewide rules nationwide. Why not have what they have agreed to in one tightly designed package here at home. Hoping the statewide regulations will keep them moving forward. Uber in hillsborough must pay 250,000 a year and lift make and lyft has to play 125,000. Now to an issue facing cabdrivers. We hear about the dangers of distracted driving but what ou we first told you that is an issue on the roads and taxi drivers have no restrictions on the number of hours that they drive. Now, thanks to our investigation the Hillsborough Public Transportation Commission plans to take action. That is crazy. Amazed that they have no restrictions on the amount of days or hours they can drive. In the drivers work seven days a week sometimes 18 hours a day. It is a lot of hours. Reporter this taxi driver says the problem is leasing the cab costs up to 600 a week and as is up to 200 a week. You are talking 800 a week that we have to cover. Reporter which means you have to drive an awful lot to even make a living. We do. Reporter several drivers told us they drive tired because they are driving many hours. That means when you are on the road driving next to a cab you can be at risk. But the commission that regulates Taxi Companies has no restrictions on the hours drivers are on the road. They seem to be more says they have dropped the ball on the issue. I am shocked and surprise that we dont have any type of regulations. Reporter the commissioner, who sits on the board, admits until he saw our story he had no idea the agency did not restrict driver hours. It is one of the things we heard, what is a the Public Transportation Committee Going to do . At one of our future meetings we will take up the issue. We do not want to restrict the cabdrivers ability to make a a living. However, Public Safety is paramount.
