But fortune reports that according to Financial Disclosure documents, kerry tolstedt is leaving with a payout of more than 124 million in stocks, options and shares. By no means is this a small retirement package. This is one of the largest for a Senior Executive that ive seen in my career. She writes all about her time on the show in her new book, in such good company 11 years of laughter, mayhem and fun in the sandbox. Carol, good morning. What an honor to have you here. Thanks, savannah. I love seeing that skit with the wind. We were just talking, the curtain rod dress is in the smithsonian. That was bob mackies genius. I dont think too many people know this, he designed everything we wore which meant 60 to 70 costumes a week. A week thats incredible. You add that up with, average, 65 a week, okay, 11 years, 276 shows, thats over 17,000 costumes he designed. Its incredible. Im glad you did the calculation there because i was told there would be no math. Speaking of another number, you watched the bulk of 276 shows. Actually, i i fast forwarded through a lot of the sketches that i remembered, and then the musical numbers i fast forwarded through. But i wanted to jog my memory to see if there were some that id forgotten or that and there were a few that id quite a few that i had forgotten and some i would say, thats really funny. Then another one i would say, thats not so funny. But it was enjoyable to go back and see how we change, how we i think they had 30 million viewers. Its just incredible to think about that. Why did you want to write the book and kind of walk down memory lane . Well, the past few years ive been getting requests from other writers who said, we would love to write about your show and can we interview you and talk about it. I figure, well, im a writer, with i should write it because im the one who was really there. You know. So i decided i would do it. Theres so much love in this bo tellalls where youre dishing the dirt, although there is a fun story about the time you had to fire harvey korman. What happened . Well, he was harvey was wonderful. There was no question about it. But sometimes hed be in a mood. But we could always kid him out of it. There would be no problem. He could change on a dime, like that. But then this one day we were rehearsing and he was not a thought you can get that way with me because i know you and it is okay, but not with the guests. So that night after the show, i went in to his dressing room. I said why were you doing he said, well, im just not happy here. I said, okay, dont come back. Boom he said what . I said, well, if youre unhappy but you cant talk to our guests that way and you cant bring your unhappiness to work. Finally, he backted said, well, okay. I said do you want a reprieve . He said yes. I said, okay. This was friday. I said monday when we start next week though, when i see you monday morning, i want you to whistle and skip down the hallway at cbs. And so that monday, im walking towards the elevator by ow our rehearsal hall. It opened. Harvey came out, we kind of and he started whistling and skipping down the hall. I howled. Then finally i had a plaque made that i put on his dressing room door that said mr. Happygolucky. One of the things you did that everyone loved, just audience q a. The whistleblower behind what is considered the biggest Security Breach in u. S. Intelligence history. Most people catalog their lives for public consumption. They catalog part of their lives and they do it by choice. We arent giving them the choice. Were just taking everything. Freedom. They want security. It is a simple bargain. Good girl good girl. It is hard to find somebody who does no the have an opinion at this point about Edward Snowden. Hero traitor. Did you have preconceived notions about him . The truth is when oliver stone, filmmaker, first offered me the job well, first i was just excited and flattered. Such a fan. Hes made jfk and born on the fourth of july and platoon and wall street and so many great movies. But my first thought was Edward Snowden, i know i recognized t name but what exexactly did he do . I actually had some learning to do. You as part of your preparation were able to go to moscow and meet with ed snowden. What was that meeting like and what were you trying to learn from that meeting . Well, i sat with him in an office. Him as well as his longtime girlfriend, lindsey mills. He is always frying to take the attention off of himself personally and put it on the issues that he raises, which is but, because im an actor, im about to play him in a movie, obviously i am focused on him personally and those little human details of how he walks or how he talks or how he would shake my hand and things like that. That was all really valuable for me. After you did your research you came to the conclusion he had done something good for the country, i take it. Did your idea about him change at all as you went through the process and learned more around got to know him a little bit . Is. Yeah. It is funny, you google him and you get all these contrary opinions. A lot of them are really what i found was, its not a simple story. Theres obviously he did break the law and he admits that he broke the law. But then theres examples of people who break the law who arent necessarily doing the wrong thing like one example i thought of is, rosa parks. You know . Back in her day, it was illegal where she lived for a black person to sit on the front of the bus and she was told to go sit on the back of the but and she refused. At that time that was breaking but we look back and now were grateful that she broke that law. Lets talk about your preparation. Because one of the things i really noticed is, even in that clip, your voice. Yeah. You really nailed the voice. He has kind of a distinctive deep voice. But it is not one that everyone knows. So as an actor to make that choice, thats a lot to take on. Im going to do this movie in a voice that is not familiar to me. Why did you want to do it, and was that an intimidating thing to take i mean, for me, a lot of my favorite actors are the ones who kind of disappear in to their character. You dont see the actor on the screen. You see the character that theyre playing. The character that i was playing was this guy. Youre right, not everyone has seen his interviews or the documentaries about him. Were you listening to them nonstop . I put them in my earphones on repeat. I slept with them. I just listened and listened. Hes got asylum in russia. He had it extended a kunl of years ago. Hed like to come home. Chance . You know, i dont know. But the little bit that ive gotten to know him, i think what he cares about more than his own personal life i mean thats clear, he risked his life to do what he did is just the fact that were having this conversation right now about government accountability, about mass surveillance. What hes always said is, mass surveillance might be right, it might be wrong, but it is a conversation that we should be having as the people. Thats kind of what makes america great, we are a democracy and we all get to kind of have the so i think hes glad that the conversation has begun. A lot of people talking about this movie. And it is a very angry song. Thats what you do. You do get into characters when you do this. Did i read somewhere that you wanted to release the whole album as one long symphony, like one big download, as opposed to separate songs. Yes. And they well, itunes wanted tracks. Because it belongs as one symphony piece. And so i did every character. I spent days with i call it a script with the lyrics getting back stories on all these characters. And did every one of them as a 19yearold. Really this is your last record . Yeah. How come . Just because im getting so many offers to do film again. And im just getting a little i had knee surgery.
