Meaning they are particular, very detail oriented, but obsessive compulsive disorder is a very Real Mental Health condition. After the break an expert and welcome back to the Morning Blend. Someone is particular, organized or super detail oriented we might say you are so ocd. But obsessive compulsive disorder is a Real Mental Health problem. More than 2 Million People struggle with it and one in symptoms before they were 14yearsold. Today were going to talk about the symptoms, how it is treated and a new program that uses an app on a smart phone to help relieve the stress and anxiety of ocd. Thats right dr. Brad reiman is the clinical director of the ocd center at rogers memorial hospital. He is an expert on the assessment and treatment on children, teens and adults thanks for being here doctor. Something that is not necessarily a mental disorder. Ocd is a mental disorder what is it . Obsessions an compulsions, unwanted, urges, that generate high levels of anxiety. A common example might be the fear of becoming dirty or contaminated. People think of howie man dell with the hand washing thing. Did something or did something correctly. Did i lock the door, did i turn off the stove. Compulsions are some sort of repetitive act. Something that someone does that can be observed a hand wash or cleaning or physically checking to make sure a door is checked. Turns lights on and off. I have heard that. Or something that can be done silently in ones own mind. It might be a silent prayer, counting in ones own mind. Disorder they do this to the point where it starts to interfere with their life. Thats what i was going to say. Think about counting things or having a specific number i do, but i wouldnt consider myself having ocd. Some people describe it as a great exaggeration of the norm. It has to interfere with someones life occupationally, academically. Its or a character trait. Its a reflection of a mental disorder. I know the good news is were talking about good news, bad news its a very treatable condition. I think because it is obsessive compulsive disorder week it is important to make sure that people have that hope that it can be treated very often successfully. Yeah and thats what ocd Awareness Week is all about. Its trying to increase Public Awareness about the condition, but also its effective when is treated properly it can be treated. How does treatment work . What kinds of things can someone look forward to if they feel like ocd interferes with their life . There are medications that have been found to be helpful. But the treatment of choice is a type of therapy knowns exposure and response prevention. Or erp. In a graduated fashion reintroduces people into their feared situations or the things they avoid and as a result they begin to get their life back there is a sense of empowerment to that. Not necessarily controlled, but it gives people hope. Just medicating i think sometimes is a problem it seems were more likely to do that in todays society. Its wonderful to think we can learn skills or a new way of thinking. Lets talk about if someone thinks or know someone they think might have ocd how do people get answers or find out more . Im glad you asked. Locally next week we have an ask the experts talk going on next at Waukesha County Technical College so myself and two colleagues from rogers will be there to really discuss ocd and its treatment, but more importantly, answer questions. So were really looking forward to that opportunity. How about research . Where is that in tr treating and understanding ocd. The research we have done focuses on how to make treatment more effective and more accessible. There is but sadly few people have access to that. There are very few centers of excellence that treat ocd. So with what we bedroom trying n trying is how do we make it more accessible. One of the things we have done is made a program. Historically it has all been on Desktop Computers with big monitors and those are becoming somewhat extinct. Their hand these days. Thats right. Were shrinking the program into an app and putting it on a hand held device a smart phone and we need to of course restudy it because were changing the program and changing the size of it. But the idea is if we can find that this app is as effective as the bigger version so to speak this is not only going to help us treat people more effectively, but really dramatically increase the accessible ibility. So many people have smart phones. This is exciting. People are going to wonder is this in place of compliment to therapy . Its also important to understand how and why it works because it has this app, its a program that sort of trains peoples brains away from the words they find threatening or like germs like we talked about trains them in a new way to kind of take their mind off of those obsessive thoughts and therefore hopefully stop the compulsive behaviors. Yeah. People with ocd tell us they kind of have their radar out and they are scanning their environment for any signs that or frighten them and they think of this as almost a protective thing that somehow this is going to help them. But unfortunately, its exactly the opposite it fuels their condition and makes ocd worse. This Computer Program shuts that radar down, trains their attention way from the thicks thingsthey find threatening and reduces ocd. Can you ever use ocd to your benefit becoming obsessed with ti become a better person . I wish it were so. I dont think so. Everyone focuses on things and so forth. I would think if we talked to people who have ocd they would probably say that it really never can be something positive. You know focus and attention is good, but this is again something really a great exage exaggeration. What i think is wonderful the attention to make it more lives i think thats the wonderful thing about this. We wanted to remind people about the free Event Next Week octobey Technical College. Experts will be there to share more information about ocd, but also take your questions. You can find out more about that event by going to the website we just had on your screen. To learn more about that event, or expert care available at rogers memorial hospital, because they are so close and have experts in wonderful programs there, you can phone number you see there. Or send an email to Research Studies rogers hospital. Org. Great to see you. Thank you. Great to s you. Thank you very much. What mama says can make a difference in your life. I know my mom has had catch phrases i live by. How one woman is honoring her weome back. Our mother helps to shape who we become as women. What would mama say is the question. Our next guest asked herself as she turned her teaching career into a writing career. Said. Shes a teacher because her mom asked her to consider it. Her mom saw her teaching in her future before she even did. That is true. Absolutely. Thats how moms are. They justnow right . They to. I know youre no longer teaching but you have i used so many of your experiences in part of your writing. Absolutely. Its a double benefit. Its a blessing to be to not only have taughtn in the Public School system, but also, getting an opportunity to be a mother, and to appreciate what my mother actually had to go through with me, and when i reflect on that experience, i think oh, i cant believe that i gave my mother such a hard time you know, but thats what teenagers do right. So were always testing the waters with our mothers, with our parents, but i was very, very blessed, very fortunate to have the type of mother that i did, very strong, woman and children. Im one of seven siblings. And one of i have a twin brother and i have younger brothers that are twins so my mother along with my dad, she had three sets of twi. No way. Oh, yes way. Three ssf twins . The first set of twins passed prematurely and so a few years later, when technology improved if the medical field my brother and i later she had another set of twins. So, i say it as a blessing. No matter how you look at it its just a blessing one set of twins in one family is a blessing, but toave sets you know. [laughter] seriously. Thats really where your story comes in you have this mother that shares her pearls of wisdom with her daughter. Its a light hearted story. You get an opportunity to appreciate the importance of a moer and a daughters bond. I remember as a teenager growing up being defiant and not really understanding and appreciating the wisdom our mothers teach us ase go along in life. And it wast until i became an adult, became a mother myself, became a wife, and became an unrstoodhe fullageally, rlly the influence my mher hadwithinn educor myself. Were there any fun sayings that stick out in your mind. Things she said especially if they are funny or just came true in your life you would often go back through in your mind . My mom said a whole lot and, one of, on my way here today, in planning for this segment, i remembered and i shared this mama always said if you plan to be ear, you will never be late. [laughter] and it made sense to me. So, i have received so many good leings in terms of advice and ons from my mother and the one i tend to fall back on quite a bit throughout my adulthood is e Small Victories that count. I found myself saying to my students when they appeared to be a little say hey, you know, try not to look at the big picture here in terms of being successful, or successfully reading a book, try to take it one step at a time. Thats what my mother taught me take it one step at a time. Its t Small Victories that really count. I like that. Yeah i do too. Its been, its sustained me for all these years. Its something truly you care thats something you do as well is create these nuggets and tools for educators to use with students. Yes i love your reference to nuggets. Thats a lot of the advice we receive from our parents and our mothers. And as an educator what i tried to do is take my experience as an educator, identify what areas we can improve on as teachers in terms of reaching out to families. So in the story, the mother did that. The mother in the out, the main character bonita came home and mom asked how was your day at school . In real life my mother when she would ask me or my siblings that question she expected responses more than the abbreviated response. Good, its fine. My mom was like no really how was your day in school she was very interested, very in tune. Character would try to getaway with that response. It was all right. She makes referen to that in the story. The mother my mom in the story, didnt except that. She wanted to know really, did you learn anything . What did you learn today . You know did you struggle with your writing today . What happened. Really today . Have here cupcakes flors its we a hallmark i love it. The theme of your book. Yes absolutely. So my hope iso rlly focus on why the second edition this is acal were celebrating our 5th year with mama said, the original mama said was actually produc in 2011ohis is our 5tye with the second it and insiddon is themunition com com. Paon and this is tool that would so helpf educators, to families, because what it does it talks about it gets int what a student is interested in. What is your tic of intest . How do you know that is the topic of interes were out of time, but people can get thistour website correct . Absolutely. Heres the website where you can find more and book signings. November 12 at 9 00 a. M. At the sheridan milwaukee and november 19 at the metropolitan educatio you nis mama said wt to. Com. Ly an honor thank you. Hs can learn from this years president ial election. Important information for drivers you know who has the welcome back to the Morning Blend. Heres a very sobering number, 50. Thats the number of pedestrians who were hit by vehicles and killed in wisconsin last year. That was up 22 from the previous year. In an effort to kee people safe the Wisconsin Bike Federation is steppi in to remd motorists to yield to pedestrians with share and beware. Tom held is back to promote feor tseran foot sshocking. I dont if some of it is related to cellphone use or people not knowing the rules. Either way these are important rules we need as drivers and pedestrians to beware of right . Ht. Awom the enfcement people i he talked t anecdotally, yes distracted driving is on the increase. Pa of that gets to cellphone usage. But there is i think, a decline in the awareness of that that requires motorists to yield to pedestrians, at a crosswalk and that doesnt have to have white lines or flashing yellow light. Any natural extension of a sidewalk constitutes a crosswalk. There was a three year study 25 of pedestrians killed were killed by motorists to failed to yield to them in a crosswalk. This is one of the most basic is to watch out for other people. And not hit another person. Well its funny because, years ago, i didnt know anybody who had been a pedesn was hit by car. I saw someone hit by a car walking with i was in chicagoyb. Since then i havad two adult friends one a friends mom and someoni worked with bot hit and one actually r ove by a car and the failure toldou are tkingbout. Its very reel. Real i think people also need to understand there are pbably these cshes right . Apn rightrigh i think sed plays a role. We find tha a l. Just as anxample trav at 20iles per hou youre stoppingistanc is about 40 feet. So on city street, 20 to 25 Miles Per Hour may seem slow, but its a reasoble and safe approach. If you get up to 40 Miles Per Hour you have tripled that hour. If you are traveling at 40 Miles Per Hour, and you hit somebody, the chances, the numbers of times when are you going to kill them is 85 . U back that down, and slow down, to 20 , that survival rate goes up to 95 . Youre only 5 likely to kill them in that situation. So, when were in this rush to get somewhere, what do we really sacrificing for that . Were creating a lethal to serve our own selfish interests perhaps. Us being late or you know, approxorin distracted what not. S t aweo that thetion too, the rht ofay way stan except in the is a caveat to that. You have to provide a reasonabl stoppiis de. Yo c . Art out into the street, without ging a athatsalf block. That gets to the speed. Easoa rble stoppingtanc you are travehe speed mit isferent than if you are iles per hour over the speed limit. I th we alle have seen people driving and we have en flashing speed motors the per pondence of speedingith children et cetera, and this lack of awareness. Motorists have tended to getaway from this idea if im have to be watching for potential hazards not only to protect myself, but to protect others. Thats why we say stop for your ighbor, yield to your neighbor. You have this webte share and beware. Org is the website. If people go there, throughout this month they can find out about some great wisconsin walks month activities things going on with this mission in mind to ke people safer on the road. Drivers, but as well as pedestrians and people riding their bikes. Right. And there is, there is this is a fairly significant percentage of pedestrian injuries and fatalities that occur midblock. If you are crossing midblock, that right of way, is not yours at that point and time. At the crosswalk. I think we all see this. Somellone wi be standing ten feet from the crosswalk its the shortest distance between two points. But you are increasing you ty so much. There you go to thank you so much. Share and beware. Org. . . Next on the show what small bunesses can learn from president ial politics and how those lessons could put money in their pocket. And later how actress eva welcome ck just 29 days away now. Tom held says running for om vertz ishere from vertz ma. Great to see you. A lot of people are like i cant wait for this to be over and have had enough. Professor from North Carolina State University of college of veterinarian medicine. He will talk about the threat for rabies and how to better protect your pets. Good morning doctor. Good morning tiffany. Thanks for being with us. Think rabies is a term we have heard of before, but can you tell us what exactly it is . Rabies is a virus. Its a well known viral suerstooi think day. Etty is capable and many years of iting both humans and animals. And as think most people know, rabies can be transmitted from an infected animal to a human by way of a bite wound. So it is real, and it is alive and well in many countries of the world including the United States. Rabies though is something that is a little bit rare you know in the United States, but why do we need to beware of it . Question and thens, it infects humans and animals a algh t incidents in the United States for rabies is low, in fact one to two people a year e all that are documented to be . D infec . B it is rare, but it iserious. The consequences are universally fatal. So its a disease to prevent certainly not a treat. Its a very real threat here for us. Well in wisconsin, it absolutely is a threat. You have several wildlife species that actually harbor rabiesaturly. And this is the critical point here that i would like to leave you with, is that the pet, the ithe Critical Link betweeni call so if you see where were going with this, cinating the is the critical action. It blocks the risk of human exposure by protecting your pet you protect the population of people as well. I think its important to know that yes, its preventable so by doing those steps to do that, we can help ourselves and help the rest of the population and help our pets as well. Where do we usually go to get our cats and well in wisconsin, tiffany, the rabies vaccination is actually required by law. , it isesponsibity tha teverybha and in the state of wisconsin, rabies must be administered by a licensed veterinarian.
