Havoc up and down the coast. The vacationing firefighters tell us how they got it out. And highway heimlich. An nypd officer in the right place at the right time. Are you choking . Yes, sir. Put your hands on your chest. He helped save a woman driving on a busy highway. His heroic efforts today, saturday, september 20th, 2014. Announcer from nbc news, this is today, with lester holt and erica hill. Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning. Welcome to today on saturday morning. Im lester holt. Im erica hill alongside jenna wolfe. Dylan is in baltimore this morning where we are sponsoring a health fair. We will check in with her for a preview. We will check in after the show. We want to get to todays top story. The Security Breach at the white house. A man was able to get through the executive doors after jumping the fence. Luckily the first family was not home at the time, but a lot of questions about how he got so far. Kristen welker is at the white house with more on this. Kristen, good morning. Reporter lester, good morning. I was here last night when the man entered the residence causing the secret service to evacuate the white house and press corps. This is the first time it has happened in the three years i have been covering the white house. Take a look. This Instagram Video captured the dramatic moments of the man running across the lawn and secret service yelling for the crowd to get back. 42yearold Omar Gonzalez of texas jumped the fence at 7 20. He made it up the north lawn and apprehended inside the nor nortnorth north portico doors. We have video trying to stop the man. Gonzalez did not appear to be armed or holding a backpack. The first family was never in danger. They left for camp david. Gonzalez may have been mentally distu disturbed. No shots were fired. Fence jumpers are not unusual, but normally stopped as they jump the fence. The secret service says quote this is under investigation and the secret service will review the response to ensure the proper protocol is followed. Lester. Kristen at the white house. Thanks very much. Turning to the scandal plaguing the nfl. Roger goodell broke his silence after more than a week. He is addressing the response to off the field violence. National correspondent Peter Alexander follows the story. Erica, good morning. Roger goodell vowed to get it right with a National Tv Audience watching. He made promises, but few details. This was scripted damage control, but it did not confirm his critics. Calling for him to resign. The reaction to the News Conference was swift from blistering to unimpressed. Social media no less harsh. It was a train wreck. Teddy brewski waeed in. Roger goodell needs to step down. We need new leadership. Reporter the commissioner started with an apology. I got it wrong in the handling of the ray rice matter. Im sorry for that. Reporter and promised to do better. If any of the victims had been someone you love, would you be satisfied with the way the league handled the crisis . m not satisfied with the way we handled it from the getgo. Reporter goodell pledged within the next month, all team and personal will take part in Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence sessions. Nothing is off the table. Reporter goodell launched plans with the Sexual Violence Resource Center and the Domestic Violence hotline which has seen calls sky rocket since the ray rice video became public. This pledges the force of the organization. Reporter it may not be enough for the fans who lined up outside the Baltimore Ravens stadiums on friday to trade in the ray rice jerseys. I cannot wear my ray rice jersey. Reporter in spite of the scrutiny, goodell wont step down. I have support of the owners. They expect us to do a better job. Reporter Roger Goodell said this is the beginning of the response he hopes to have a new policy in place by the super bowl. That is next february. Nearly five months away. Thanks, peter. Nancy armer is a sports writer. Peter mentioned the reaction was swift and blistering. He puts your column in that category. You said the press conference and what he had to say landed with a thud. There wasnt a lot there. There was nothing there. Nothing of substance. He had beinn communicative for n days. He said we are going to do this and we are going to do this and we are going to do this, but we got we are going to try really hard and talk to experts. How does that happen . The public has been calling for days and weeks in the number of ways for some substantive plan or action. How does it get to the point in the nfl that the commissioner is 50 minutes late for the press conference and says we will try to get something worked out in the next five months. Where is the disconnect . I think part of it is tone deafness. The nfl is the most popular sport in our country by far. You know, ratings last weekend were at record highs. I dont know if they think we can push it away and everybody will keep watching. I dont think they really recognize or appreciate truly the anger and unhappiness. There has been and the calls continue to come in for goodell to step down. He said nothing is off the table except perhaps his job or resignation. Would that solve anything though . I dont know it necessarily would. I think it would maybe make some people happy in the shortterm. Its more of a cultural thing within the nfl that they have to recognize they need to do things differently. You know, come up with some cohesive plans and i dont know if goodell is the whole problem. Right now, he is the face of the problem. Who does he answer to ultimately . He is the commissioner of the league, but he has to answer to somebody at some point. Is it the sponsors . Billions of dollars . It is, but it is the owners. He was asked about it yesterday. He said no, he has been assured that he is on solid ground. You point out they had record ratings and nbc polls which say this is a huge issue for people in terms of whether or not they watch the nfl. If all of that continues, does this end up being swept under the rug . I dont think so. I think it started a conversation which will not end which is a good thing. I do think if the nfl doesnt get this figured out soon, it is a slow drum beat. Who knows what happens in five years or ten years or maybe 15 years if it keeps happening. In the shortterm, will it impact us . Probably not. In the long term, it could. Not the last time we will talk about this one. Maybe wishing he did things differently. Thank you. Thousands of tourists in Cabo San Lucas are forced to flee desperate to get out after hurricane odile wrecked the area. Joe fryer is there this morning. Good morning. Reporter this popular destination is no longer a magnet for tourists. Cabo is destroyed. Completely destroyed. Reporter a swift bunch by hurricane odile was felt up and down the coast. A night she he wont forget. A high pitched whistle and lots of banging noises as things are flying and hitting. We could hear pieces of the roof falling off being ripped off. Reporter at a private airport, hangars were levelled and planes twisted like cans. The military stands guard at stores and gas stations. Power is out and resorts are closed and tourists are fleeing. Van horn waited in line for six hours at airport before catching a flight to los angeles. We were on a delta plane with 50 passengers. It was amazing to get on that plane. Reporter throughout the week, tens of thousands of people came to the cabo airport looking for a way out. Now the long lines have vanished as those looking to escape have been evacuated by plane. Were going home. Reporter many tourists returned home to the united states. Nick and ashton are back in chicago. The first thing they will do. Hug the kids. Not let go. Reporter were here at the airport which was hit hard by the hurricane. This is the kind of damage we have seen just about everywhere we have gone. Here at the airport, good news. It appears nearly all of the international tourists, including americans who are trying to fly out of the battered paradise have been evacuated. We ran into a group of four people who are still trying to catch a flight today to get back to sacramento. Lester. Joe fryer for us in cabo. Thanks. Battalion chief tom mangienello is with the chicago fire department. They were in cabo for toms wedding and just made it back safe and sound. Gentlemen, good morning. Great to see you. Tom, congratulations to you. I assume you got the wedding off before all this happened . Yes, we did. On saturday, it was a Beautiful Day out there. You would have never known what would hit us. And pat, i know some of the other hotels took flood damage. You went looking for supplies and tell me about what you saw when you got into the rest of town. When we went into town on monday morning, after the storm, you really got a feel for the actual devastation that had occurred from the storm. Telephone poles down. Devastation everywhere you looked. I know you saw some looting as well. Tom, as some point, the looters got to your hotel and you guys basically started taking up security positions. Tell me what you did to protect the large Wedding Party you were with. Well, first and foremost, we huddled in the hallway. We made a cache of weapons out of wherever we could pick up from the hotel or find kind of like in prison. We did our best to defend our group and keep watch overnight as people tried to get sleep. At some point, could you hear the looters or see them in the hotel . Absolutely. They were raiding cars outside our windows. They were walking through the hotel and rummaging through the rooms abandoned by guests. Tom, you had to figure out a way to get to the airport. Cabs were not working. Reports of people ripped off in cabs. You managed to arrange for some vans to get you out of there, but actually escaping the hotel itself was an operation. Explain to me. Okay. Ill take it. It was my son nick who contacted one of the workers there. The workers in the complex were good. They were helping everybody the best they could. He contacted a worker who got the group of vans. We had six vans. We had 50 people with us. Some elderly. Some people were worried about medications and all that. So at 5 00 in the morning, we had to kind of sneak out of the hotel because we were concerned about a mob reaction of people coming and just swarming the vans. Finally, pat, i know you got to the airport and there you see the sight of an american commercial airliners. One Airline Worker comes up to you and gives you a sense of everything is going to be okay. Tell me what happened. As we were standing in line waiting to be escorted on the tarmac, an employee from the Alaskan Airlines walked up to us and confirmed for us he would be the one taking care of us. He just reassured us we were safe and the event was over. We were going to be on a plane. We are all glad you are back safely. Again, tom, congratulations to you. Trust me, marriage gets better after surviving a hurricane. Thanks again. Great wedding. The honeymoon wasnt so good. Take care. Thank you. A redo. Good excuse for another vacation. Carl were back on a saturday morning with an inspiring woman who is part of our extended family at nbc. Rebecca alexander is slowly losing her sight and hearing because of a rare genetic disorder called ushers disease. She is living life to the fullest and telling her story in not fade away. Rebecca and her brother, peter, our National Correspondent are here with us. Good morning. We spoke last time five years ago about ushers disease and how it is affecting you. You found out about this when you were in college and slowly came to grips with it. You say you are happy now. You are happier than you have ever been. Explain. I think when i first was given my official diagnosis, i was 19. It was really overwhelming and i wanted to try to hide my disabilities as much as i could. I could never imagine ever being blind and deaf. The idea of it overwhelmed me. To imagine myself here today with far less vision and far less hearing, i felt like i would never want to be in that place. Yet, here i am and im happier than i ever was at the time diagnosed. You made the decision to get a cochlear implant. You are hearing again, but not in the way you used to. Explain how you hear voices and music. A cochlear implant is a speech processor. It is embedded in your skull. You are giving up whatever residual hearing you have essentially. Im really hearing and deaf. I decided it was best decision for me because i was raised in a hearing family and hearing world. When i decided to get cochlear implanted, i had to have the implant and go through just about a year of listening therapy. Often times we see videos of people with the implants turned on for the first time and it is so exciting, but it is actually a lot more work than that. You dont simply get turned on and all of a sudden you are back to hearing. It is a digitized hearing. It takes time to relearn how to hear with it. Tell me about your sight now. I understand your field of vision is down to about 10 . What does that mean . Describe how you see things. Sure. A normally sighted person, i like to explain this way, has about 180 degrees of vision. So i have about 10 degrees. So my central most vision is my strongest. I dont really have the outer area. I have a small sliver of vision in outer periphery. How much of him do you see . I can see his face. I can see a little bit down here. You see nothing on either side of me. This doesnt define who you are. You are an incredibly accomplished woman as we mentioned. Two masters degrees. A psycho therapy. A spin instructor. I have been in your class a couple of times. A very good spin instructor. Explain to me, do you feel you are going through a check list of things you need to accomplish before you lose sight comcompl y completely . This disease reminds me i dont have time to sit around and wait for things to happen. I have to make them happen. I think im doing everything that i want to do. People talk about having a bucket list. I dont have a bucket list. Im simply living my life and doing the things i want to do. You have a lot of people rooting for you. You have your wing man here, as you describe. Peter. One time she was out on a blind date. Talk about ruining your game. She was out on a date to meet a guy. She knew he was going to be there. It is a loud room and dark. This is not a fun night in new york a couple years back. I saw the guy. I saw the picture of him before we got there. I saw him walking toward her. Hes on your right in five, four, three, two. Hi. He did not have a clue. Im not sure you want to take your big brother on the date. Awkward. Obviously a hollywood producer is thinking, i will write this in a scene. Rebecca, thank you for coming by. The book is called not fade away. Coming up on nbc, we will catch up with debra m you use tide pods . Yeah but i thought you were the queen of the pretreat soak treat soak . Those are fond memories, but those things are amazing. Once i saw what they did, i actually started to relax. Dont touch my things. Those little guys clean, brighten and fight stains. So now i can focus on more pressing matters. Like your containers. Isnt it beautiful . Your sweet peppers arent next to your hot peppers. [ gasps ] [ sarah ] thats my tide. Whats yours . [ gasps ] ok who woh, i do t rolls . whoooosh smack whoooosh smack whoooosh smack whoooosh smack whoooosh smack whoooosh smack whoooosh smack thanks carol electric hedge trimmer Everybody Loves the sweet, fluffy deliciouslness of kings hawaiian bread. [ male announcer ] this man has an Accomplished Research and Analytical Group at his disposal. But even more impressive is how he puts it to work for his clients. Morning. Morning. Thanks for meeting so early. Oh, its not a big deal at all. Come on in. [ male announcer ] its how edward jones makes sense of investing. Theres no mystery when it comes to the talents of Debra Messing. We still cannot get enough of her in will and grace. She is trading in the water bra for the police badge. You are looking at six months easily. Unless. Unless what . You get my boys enrolled in prek. Im just a mother with a shiny badge, a loaded gun and very little patience. Debra messing is with us. Good morning. Good morning. That will wake up. I hear you are a fan of date line. Where does all that coming from . I dont know. Its from very young age. I was really fascinated. I intended to be a prosecutor. Somehow you got side tracked . Side tracked. It worked out okay. It did. I get to do both. I get to solve crimes. It is a dramady. You dont see them on network television. To have a very classic, very complicated murder mystery coupled with laugh out loud moments of comedy is incredibly challenging thing to do. Finding the right tone. Were having a ball doing it. I understand it is important to you that your character be relatable which is why she is disshoved and a mom of twin boys and eating burritos off her desk. Why is that important to you . It is important to show reality. You know, im a working mom. The hardest job in the world trying to balance those two things. I wake up in the morning and whatever pair of pants on the floor of my bathroom go on. I dont look to see if they match. Sometimes you have to truck on through. Thats what i like about this character. You know, shes the best at what she does. She is a really smart detective. But she has no vanity. She is yelling at her kids running around the house. Before we let you go, you got a lot of attention for your juggling recently on jimmy fallon. This was actually part of your curriculum in school . It was. My masters degree from nyu.
