I showed you a picture of una last time i was on. She looks like me, but she weighs 22 pounds and has a a vagina. Jimmy its a little different. She looks exactly like me, with those differences. Shes 14 months and its like, you know, im a little bit jealous of her. You know, you have children. They just bond. Jimmy mama. Baby. Yeah. Yeah. Its intense. Jimmy like shes saying other words. She thinks shes like, im thinking like thinking, we should go to the park more often. [ light laughter ] id like it if we had more bananas around the house. Im surprised im the only one who loves those. Then what comes out is, dada im just like, all right. Jimmy well get bananas. Well get bananas. Well go to the park. Its great. Jimmy last time you were here backstage you were telling me about this movie. Yeah, dont think twice. Jimmy dont think twice. Congratulations on this. My first movie is a movie about my life sleepwalk with me. Jimmy i loved it. Thank you. Jimmy one of my alltime favorites. And then, this new movie is about your life. Jimmy fallon. No, its about an improv group. Its a fictional movie about an improv group where someone gets cast in an snl type of show called weekend live in the film. And then the rest of them dont. And its about what happens when you realize not everyone is going to make it the same way. Its a big chill type comedy. Set in the world of an improv theater. When i told you the premise, you told me this great story about when you got snl and you called to tell the news at the grounding, where you had done improv. Jimmy my teacher at the groundings, was there. I like you remember this. I called to thank my teacher to say, hey man it worked. I just got saturday night live. Im so excited and i called and i said is jim there . Hes not here right now. This is jimmy fallon. They go, well, mr. Fallon, glad youre calling. We are trying to get hold of you, buddy. You didnt pay your dues for the next class. If you dont pay, youre not going to be in it. I go, im calling to tell him i got saturday night live. [ light laughter ] and it was just this silence on the phone. And you said you can go [ bleep ] yourself jimmy no. I did not say that. Boom boom jimmy that is not true. Not at all. We all know the part you left out of that story. Dont try to pretend you were all humble. Jimmy i did not do that. That youre the sweet version of jimmy fallon. Jimmy that is not what i did at all. That the persona, guys, but its not. I know the real jimmy fallon. The real jimmy fallon said you jimmy come on. I did not do that. Air punch, that its jimmy fallon i know. [ talking over each other ] look, im just here to tell the truth. Thats what im here for. Jimmy sometimes i wish i was that guy. Is that the truth . Jimmy no. Right. [ light laughter ] jimmy hes listening to something else. Hes having a great conversation on a phone call right now. The movie is super funny, but also kind of the touching and its very emotional, too. It makes you laugh and cry. Jimmy thats what you want out of a movie. Mike birbiglia, youre doing what we all want. Thanks. Jimmy we want these movies. You want to laugh, you want to cry. You want the whole package. Those are the kind of movies i like to go to. Judd apatow saw the film recently then he called me and goes, is it okay that i cried through the last 20 minutes of the movie . I was like, thats exactly what i want to happen. Jimmy yeah. So i feel very lucky that its connecting. Jimmy you did your job. Yeah. Jimmy its tough to make comedy thats also kind of dealing with serious stuff, too. Like youre saying, failure, not feeling like you made it or death. Sure. And theres this scene in the movie where these characters are best friends, and im sure you find this when youre best friends with people. You can make kind of darker jokes. Jimmy yeah. In this movie right . [ light laughter ] jimmy you can. You have to be friends. You see, thats what i was saying, i was being dark. No, but heres whats crazy because it gets darker than i even thought. Well, theres this one scene where we are making jokes about our friends dad whos in the hospital. To try and comfort him, were making jokes because his dad is laid up and hes like, thank you. Then were on the drive home were like, doing mimicking. Thank you. Thank you. Its funny but like its like, you know, when, in times of crisis. Jimmy you told me this is based on its based on my buddy tolamy when his dad was in hard times like, many years ago. I called him, do you mind if i use this in my movie . He was like, no ones going think its funny. But you can use it. And then he generously let me use. Jimmy it is fuy. But theres a darker and its funny and plays for laughs, but like there is a a darker part of the reallife story that didnt make it in the movie. Jimmy this is insane, by the way. When tolamys dad passed away we went to celebrate his life at benihana. [ light laughter ] we brought tolamy brought his ashes in a little baggy. Like, a little bit of him. We were drinking a bit. And at one point wuest, you can see where this is going. [ light laughter ] at one point, tolamy sprinkled a few of the ashes on to the griddle. Is that what its called . Then the chef didnt notice. He was like and so we kind of ate tolamys dad. [ light laughter ] but i didnt put it in the movie because it was too weird. Jimmy thank you. But i can tell you, because were friends. Jimmy exactly. So its all full circle. And now were all friends. I want to show the clip i love that thats a real story, man. I want to show everyone a clip. This is basically youre doing an improv scene where you get suggestion out of the audience and do a scene based out of that suggestion. Heres Mike Birbiglia in dont think twice. Check this out.
