He prayed at the virgin of charity in santiago. That statue represents the patron saint of cuba and it is 403 years old. Today, the pontiff will hold mass at the shrines sanctuary. Hell also meet with families at the cathedral. His last official act in cuba will be blessing the city from the cathedrals balcony. Today pope francis will land in our area for his first ever trip to the u. S. Landing at joint base andrews 4 00 this afternoon. Were along massachusetts avenue right outside the naval observatory and the Vatican Embassy. The fencing is up. Massachusetts avenue will be closed in this area to northbound traffic only. And those closures, according to ddot start at 6 30 this morning. Thats what you can expect in this area. Now, here along mass avenue, once the closures start, in place for the entire three days that the pope is here. Youll only be able to get through here in the southbound direction. Northbound, you cannot go beyond waterside drive. Trucks not permitted to come through here. All vehicles could be subject to screening in this area. It is important to take these closures day by day because the pope doesnt land at joint base andrews until about 4 00 this afternoon. Aaron was mentioning that. So really we have a whole day to get through here before he even gets here. Hell then make his way here to the embassy which likely means rolling closures later today and motorcade along places like the suitland parkway and the southeast southwest freeway. Metro is a whole other story. They had that meltdown yesterday on the rails. They say that theyre working to prevent things like that and all hands on deck. The papal visit will mean long lines, crowded trains and possible delays on metro. A couple of things to keep in mind, metro will open and close at normal times. 5 00 in the morning to midnight. And cant take them into any papal events. Be aware of security crews that could search any bag you bring with you on the train. The papal visit will affect two schools. Imagine Andrews Public Charter School and imagine foundations morning side Public Charter School will dismiss students two hours early this afternoon. School officials warn bus pickup and dropoff times may be off as well because of the heavy traffic around washington. The papal visit is being called an unprecedented security event in this country. Three large cities, 16 stops, crowds topping a million people. Law enforcement here in d. C. Along with new york and philadelphia say they are ready. Secret Service Officials are leading the security effort across the visited cities. There will be snipers, s. W. A. T. Teams, helicopters, protecting the pope and you for that matter. Military planes and choppers are looking for gunmen who kidnapped four tourists. Those missing include a norwegian resort manager, two canadians, and a filipino woman. These are the victims. Their identities just released. Police say the victims were targeted as they entered a resort. 11 gunmen are believed to be part of this. Right now no immediate suspects or a motive has been given. Prosecutors say antwaan james shot Joseph Newell moren this a dozen times in 2013. The two were arguing over yard work at their home. A surveillance camera at a neighbors house caught the whole thing. Detective newell was a 24year veteran of the force. A Fairfax County Public Schools teacher is under arrest this morning. Police say Michael Sweeney was arrested after being found in a parked car with a 16yearold girl on sunday in alexandria. According to an online staff directory, sweeney teaches at Walt Whitman Middle School in alexandr alexandria. Authorities have not said how he and the girl know each other. Sweeney is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. We may soon learn more about the bloody arrest of a university of virginia student. Governor Terry Mcauliffes office is expected to release the administrative report of the arrest of marquis johnson. Johnson and some lawmakers repeatedly asked for this report. It is expected to be released pending signed consent agreements from those involved. Photos and video of the arrest outside of a pub in march were circulated on social media sparking public outrage. The agents involved in the arrest were cleared of any wrongdoing and back at work. Loudoun county has a new interim supervisor following the arrest of one of its former supervisors, Shawn Williams arrested earlier this month on assault and unlawful entry charges. James bonfils will represent the Broad Run District also a chairman of the countys parks and rec board. Williams resigned after his arrest. A newly elected supervisor will take over on january 1st. Good morning. Were following the major traffic impact his visit will cause today. He arrives at joint base andrews around 4 00 this afternoon. Hell travel 18 miles to the Vatican Embassy in northwest washington. There is a lot youre going to have to avoid. Around joint base andrews is what well Start Talking about here this morning. Pretty much everything. First of all, branch avenue, off limits for you there as it is right next to the base. Then pennsylvania avenue as well. And suitland parkway there. Now, it is not clear what impact this will have on the beltway. Might want it avoid that area, stay away during that part of the day here today. Taking a look here, downtown here, in northwest washington now, thinking about other roads, were talking about wisconsin avenue, massachusetts avenue, right here in front of the embassy. And 34th street northwest, also going to be a no go because thats where the embassy is. High security there where pope francis will be sleeping the next few nights. Avoid wisconsin avenue, which i mentioned, which can be closed. Vatican officials and security not telling us what route the pope will take tonight. It is just best to stay away. Im pretty proud of myself. We were thinking this wasnt going to go so smoothly. Doing good. Doing good. Round of applause. Absolutely right. Good job. The altar and chairs are set up for the popes mass. The perimeter has already been fenced in. Nobody will allowed inside the gates wou s without a ticket. No parking signs around the cathedral of st. Matthew the apostle in anticipation of the popes visit tomorrow. Looking ahead to tomorrow, the i95 express lanes in virginia will change for the popes visit. On wednesday and thursday, the lanes will reverse direction an hour earlier. Northbound will switch to southbound starting at 10 00 a. M. Instead of usual 11 00 a. M. The southbound express lanes will open at noon instead of 1 00 p. M. The express lanes will be back to normal on friday. You can expect a lot of tour buses and more pedestrians than usual in the Pentagon City area of arlington. And to avoid that slowdown, fairfax connector route 599 buses will not stop at the following spots starting today. Army, navy drive and 15th street. And south hayes street at the Pentagon City metro. All routes will return to normal on friday. Starting today, make sure to doublecheck the signs around where you park in the district. The department of public works says it will not hesitate to tow your car if it is parked where it shouldnt be. Crews will not enforce regular street sweeping restrictions on some streets. They say they will be out in force during the teams with games today and tomorrow. Metro will have a test today, a huge crowd will use trains during the papal visit. We understand that some of you may not be very optimistic, especially with the frustration fresh from yesterday. News 4 transportation reporter adam tuss found out that a transformer caught fire in a mechanical room alongside the metro tracks. And you can see the smoke near the stadium armory metro stop. There it is. Yesterday morning. This is very dangerous. The atmosphere down there is, you know, it is black, it is dark. You cant see. You are not 100 sure nrbliniti what is charged with electricity and what isnt. Metro still has to fix the problem too. It caused huge delays for thousands of commuters along the blue, orange and silver lines. Document obtained by nbc news shows Law Enforcement is worried the terrorists may impersonate First Responders to enter secure areas. The bulletin from Pennsylvania State Police Warns Officers to be on the lookout for attackers with fake i. D. Cards and uniforms. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says there are no specific threats and this is simply a reminder for officers to be vigilant. This morning, police from around our area are working to figure out if the same guys are behind several Convenience Store robberies. And robbery at an arlington hotel. Look here, pictures from the robbery at the Crown Plaza Hotel this past weekend. Arlington police say it happened early in the morning. The three suspects all dressed in black and used shotguns to threaten employees. When you hve a shotgun held to your head, thats very threatening. Our witness testimony from those employees, they were extremely scared. The facts of the robbery are very similar to robberies at some Convenience Stores in our area. Police say theyre still looking for the suspects as none of them left fingerprints in the hotel. A man is now in custody after being charged in a deadly hit and run outside of a d. C. Hospital. Officers arrested ravid comfort yesterday. Hes accused of striking and killing kabaday outside of United Medical center last month. She had worked at the hospital as a physicians assistant. She was hit crossing southern avenue on her way home. That raised concerns about crossing safety outside of that d. C. Hospital. News 4s pat collins started asking the mayor about the concerns since United Medical was the only hospital in d. C. Without a cross walk. There is now one in place at that location. In loudoun county, investigators are urging you to be extra alert in herndon. Gunfire hit six buildings there over the last three months. The buildings were all within a half mile of each other, just off the dulles toll road. Investigates think the shootings could be connected to one that hit a Leesburg Bank last month. News 4 learned that at Bowser Administration has notified a d. C. Police officer she could be fired for living in maryland. In a letter obtained by news 4, that female officer was notified she must appear before a show cause hearing to prove she still lives in the district or her job will be, quote, forfeited and she will be separated from district service. Police Union Officials acknowledge the officer who has been with the department for two years did recently move from d. C. Into maryland after she got married. D. C. Employees who request preferential consideration for employment because theyre d. C. Residents are required to live in the city for seven years before they move. It costs 95,000 approximately to recruit and train one Police Officer. In the last 20 months, we have lost 629 Police Officers. We are down 131 positions on the force. Supposed to be at 4,000. I cant imagine that the district would think it makes sense to remove this Police Officer when were struggling to retain Police Officers. The officer does not dispute she received special consideration in her application because of her d. C. Residency. A spokesperson for the department of Human Resources, which instituted this job action, tells news 4 once the matter goes to a hearing, it becomes a Personnel Matter and each case is handled on a case by case basis. We could learn a lot about the differences between schools in Montgomery County today. The office of legislative oversight is delivering a report about School Staffing and resources. The report compares average xlas sizes at all the schools and examines how much each school spends on each student. It includes average teacher salary and tenure. Road closures here ddot tells us start around 9 00 this morning. Southbound traffic will be permitted on massachusetts avenue. No trucks allowed to come through here and if you do drive through here in your car, all vehicles are subject to search. Now, lets look at mass avenue right now. The roads still open, a lot of traffic still coming through here. When you need to know, though, is that road closures once they go in place will be in effect for the entire three days that the pope is here. There will also be parking restrictions in this area. Important to take these closures day by day because the pope doesnt even land at joint base andrews until about 4 00 this afternoon. Then, hell make his way here, which likely means rolling closures and motorcade along places like the suitland parkway and the southeast southwest freeway. No one has seen luban fitz since a picnic at watkins Regional Park on friday afternoon. He told a staff member at the picnic he needed to use the restroom and hasnt been seen since.
