A spa day nightmare. A pedicure that almost cost a man his life. And the proud owner of a pet. First, on the Year Anniversary of the shooting that nearly killed him, Alexandria Police officer finally met one of the men who helped save his life. He was shot in the head when he pulled over a taxi cab driver. In his rescue, a chopper pilot had to pull off difficult maneuvers at the school playground. They got a chance to meet this week. Virginia bureau chief reporter, julie carey was there. Reporter when i interviewed him, he told me he wanted to meet the helicopter pilot that landed on this playground to help save him. He met the medic on board, got a chance to say thanks in person to that pilot. You were on the ground. We needed to get to you. We dodged over there. Reporter its a conversation and reunion Alexandria Police officer, peter, hoped to have for months. On the oneYear Anniversary of the day he was shot in the head on motorcycle patrol, it happened. They heard the story of the day from one of the most critical emergency responders, Park Police Eagle one pilot. Somebody told me before that, officer down. Im not going anywhere. Thats what he did. You know, its probably one of those thing that is probably saved my life. Reporter whats amazing to many is what he did to get to him so quickly. Eagle one was on a president ial detail with two secret Service Personnel on board. Medic heard the officer down call and eagle one broke away to head to alexandria. When they heard he was injured, they made a Bold Decision to land in a tight spot on a school playground, a half block from him. He couldnt have done it without the secret Service Agent on board to watch the choppers tail. And there was an alexandria canine officer on the ground to keep people away. Time is of the essence. It is. Its of the essence. We have to get down there. Theres nothing i think we can get in there. I need someone to keep an eye o. Im just one little part. Reporter the landing and pick up was successful. He was rushed to med star. When i think of everybody who has been a part of this, everybody did their job. Reporter seeing him was a great feeling. I was worried about getting emotional. We dont get to see the folks back on their feet. It was great. It makes you feel warm inside. Reporter his arm was in a sling because he just add surgery. The National Park Service Released the peak bloom forecast for the Cherry Blossoms. After 102 years of cherly blossoms, they are pretty good at knowing how the cold affects it buds. So far, theres nothing to worry about. The weather this month will be the most important factor for when the blossoms will reach their most beautiful. We are very confident that we will see that peak blooming period occur this year between the 8th and 12th of april. We see things are nicely lined up for that to be a fitting finale for this years Cherry Blossom festival. It is scheduled from march 20th through april 13th. Hey, folks, its just over two weeks away. How can i reach my goals . Reporter those are the Big Questions asked here at dmsr, diverse male student initiative. Its designed for young men at prince Georges Community college. 500 men have come through the program. The outcomes are clear. Semester to semester retention rate is 85 . 39 higher than men not in the program. They have a program where we can share struggles as well as successes. Reporter after being in jail, the stakes are higher for adam. Hes pursuing a degree in engineering. He thinks these men lack knowledge itself. What your motivation should be. What direction you should take. What is your moral compass . Once you establish who you are, that begins the bedrock of hope. Does that make sense . She couldnt believe it when they called her name to receive a National Award for excellence in education. She was moved to tears when they presented her with the Family Foundation National Educator award. A student says she is like a second mom. I have never worked harder in a career in my life, but never been happier. I just cant believe it. Amazing. This is an amazing way to give her something back. Shes been teaching since 2007. Rachel is seven months pregnant and says bonding is important, too. We share stories. We know other people are going through the same thing we are going through. In news 4 your health this week, a relaxing day at the salon turns into a nightmare. A d. C. Man contracted an infection that nearly killed him. He is sharing his story so others dont fall victim. Another night in bed, i might not have lived, at that point. Reporter three weeks in the hospital and five surgeries. Doctors say its because of a pedicure. They had some type of instrument they were putting under my toe and i think they punctured the tissue under there. Reporter 63yearold Bruce Walters felt discomfort getting a pedicure in his hometown in indiana. He didnt think anything about it. Ten days later, when he returned to d. C. , he started feeling flulike symptoms and confusion. I was not completing sentences and kind of disoriented. Doctors at med star georgetown found an infection raging through his body, especially in his leg. The most likely cause was bacteria that entered his big toe during a pedicure. He was getting so much it has to be released. Reporter infections from nail salons are rare, but they do happen. Maryland, d. C. And virginia each get anywhere from 30 to 45 complaints each year for things like unsanitary conditions and infections. Thats out of hundreds of salons. That number could be much higher, though, since many complaints are never reported. Its scary to realize its from a minor, minor incident, minor break in the skin, minor break to a nail is the point for a dangerous bacteria. Reporter they say people should be extra observant at the salon. You shouldnt see nail clippings or nail dust at the workstations. Stainless steel bowls can be safer than whirlpool tubs. Bacteria can get caught in the jets and hoses of the tub if they are not cleaned properly after each use. Check where the technicians are getting their tools. It should come from a sterilized pouch like this. Sometimes the details are what makes the difference between a safe, clean, you know, service and being in a situation where you can get some sort of infection. Doreen gentzler, news 4. Reporter a lot of planning went into the photo. She put the pool at the front door so the kids wouldnt get too cold. Inside, she had them practice their angry snow faces. Was it fun posing for the picture yesterday . Yes. Reporter did you practice your angry snow face . Yes. Reporter can you do an angry snow face for me now . The judges loved it. Their faces sold it. You could tell they were frustrated. They were cute to boot. Reporter congratulations to jaime and her kids. Pat collins, snow stick winner. I would have voted for them, too. The temperatures will be a little cooler than average and, in terms of the chances of seeing some snow, there is a slight chance. They might get a little bit of use with the snow stick. There are some people who dont get the day off when it snows. That includes the guard at Arlington National cemetery. Despite the blowing snow, they stood tall. The funeral was for Lieutenant Colonel newman. He served from 1942 to 1975. During his 33year career, he won numerous awards, including the bronze star. He died this past fall at the age of 93.
