In the wake of last weeks shooting, many are asking if the gunman was psychotic and what does that mean . Joshua winer joins us with answers. What does psychotic mean . What are that means is a general term that implies that the purpose is out of touch with reality. They cant distinguish whether what they are experiencing is happening in reality or whether its part of their imagination. Generally what we are talking about is somebody is experiencing either delusions, false beliefs, or hallucinations which is hearing voices and seeing things that are not there. What are the signs and symptoms . Let me go into more detail. When you talk about delusions, there two most common types. The paranoid delusions where people think people are after them or poisoning them or harm them in some way. Then delusions of grandeur and somebody thinks they have special power and they have a connection to god. God is speaking directly with them. What is interesting i think is that no matter what country you are talking about whether its the United States or another country in the world, the delusions tend to be the same. They have the same cluster of delusions. They can be any of the sense. You can have auditory, visual or smelling or tack ill. Most frequently they are auditory and the dangerous ones are called command hallucinations. A person is hearing a voice that is telling them to do something. All psychotics dangerous . They all have the potential to be dangerous. They are at an increased risk of being violent compared to the general member of society. About 10 of people can be dangerous. The reason is obvious. If somebody is out of touch with reality, they are unpredictable and you dont know how they are going to respond. They are not applying reason and logic to their actions. Should all be hospitalized . It would be nice if all psychotic people were hospitalized if they were willing to hospitalize themselves. A Family Member could not have them hospitalized . If you are delusional and not imminently dangerous, you cannot be hospitalized against your will. Its a big challenge for people because these people obviously are in severe need of help, but may not necessarily want the upon help or be able to get the help because we cant hospitalize them or give them treatment against their will.
