Winter storm warning around hagerstown and parts of the West Virginia panhandle. It does not include d. C. But we could see some issues here too. Virginia state police are now launching a criminal investigation into the arrest of a university of virginia student. Martese johnson arrested by alcoholic Beverage Control agents wednesday morning. The 20yearolds face was bloodied as he was taken down. His family arrived on the campus. That is all as the urban league releases its annual report on the state of black america. The attorney tells us the family has flown in from chicago to be here today. Theyll be addressing the media soon. This is Martese Johnson, the 20yearold, laying on the ground outside trinity irish pub. Thats just on the corner here in charlottesville. Hes being cuffed by virginia alcoholic Beverage Control agents. They say he became agitated and belligerent. His injuries though so bad he had to get ten stitches at the hospital. That image as i told you gone viral. Its led to protests that have continued through today. In between class students were calling for justice. I caught up with marteses friends earlier today. Honor committee, orientation leader a kappa, his ties to the community are so extensive its hard for me to believe that Something Like this would happen to him. Seeing the photo of his face brutally beaten and also gushing with blood, it had such a Significant Impact on my mindset. Reporter looking at all these cameras set up by our count about 16 local here in virginia and national media, all covering this. You cant help but to think back to what this year has been like here in charlottesville and at uva. You think about Hannah Grahams murder and disappearance, think about the Sexual Assault allegations, students telling me on grounds today it has been a tough year for them. Looking at the report and talking to urban league ceo marc morial who told me today when it comes to africanamerican income and employment and especially he says the net worth of black families now in america, were in a state of emergency. The urban league report says the biggest problem facing africanamericans is not their treatment by police or what students at university of virginia charged last night was mistreatment after student Martese Johnson was bloodied by cops. The report finds social justice for blacks improving, less crime and violence but finds a stunning and worsening economic gap between white americans and africanamericans. Who now have a median net worth of just 6,300 versus 111,000 for whites. Black income is 35,000 vest 58,000 for whites. And the black Unemployment Rate is more than double that of whites. A tale of two nations, says marc morial, the head of the urban league. This is not a sustainable thing for the United States of america and were a nation that believes that upward economic mobility is tied to education, perseverance and hard work. Reporter not race. Im Steve Handelsman news4. Another ruling came down late this afternoon in a case that sparked National Conversations about race. A New York State Supreme Court judge denied a request to release secret grand jury testimony in the aaron garner case. Last year a Police Officer put garner in a choke hold to get him on the ground and garner died. A grand jury decided not to indict the officer, civil Rights Groups ss ss sued to have the testimony unsealed. Judge said they didnt make a Strong Enough argue tomt do so. Breaking news in the district, a series of robberies in Columbia Heights this afternoon involving two suspects with similar descriptions. Jackie bensen is at the scene. Reporter this was broad daylight two armed robberies, three blocks apart in three minutes. Police saturated the area around 11th street and park road in northwest looking for possibly the same two suspects ssuspects. Were told the clothing description is very similar in both crimes. This neighborhood is home to a number of popular bars and restaurants including meridian pint and the coop. In one case one of the suspects was holding a black handgun. Because these crimes happened in broad daylight there is great concern for from residents and Business Owners who tell me a number of their employees have been victims of crimes in recent weeks. Neither of the two victims today were injured during the course of the attempts. Were just getting new video in from bethesda where a bmw slammed into a rite aid. This is the store in the west bar Shopping Center. Our camera crews say nobody was seriously injured in the crash. The investigation is still going on. A triple shooting this morning inside a home in knoxville, maryland turned out to be a double murder and a suicide. This is new video of the home on valley road in Washington County. Police say 87yearold johnny green called a Family Member and said he had shot his wife mary and son, mark and was just about to shoot himself. Then that relative called police. Police got there and found the two men dead. The woman was take on the hospital where she later died. Theres no word yet on a possible motive. The director of the secret service is trying to debunk news accounts of the latest scandal at the agency. Director Joseph Clancy told the senate today that initial accounts of two agents driving a car into a gate were overblown. He says the video shows the vehicle entering the white house complex at an extremely low speed, one or two Miles Per Hour and pushing aside a plastic barrel. Allegations that the agents had been drinking before the incident are under investigation. New reaction tonight to sex Assault Charges against a d. C. Police officer who is also a pastor. That reaction comes from a fellow pastor just as prosecutors allege there could be additional victims. Heres news4s Mark Segraves. Reporter officer darrell best is charged with sexually assaulting a 16yearold girl inside his church on three occasions and a 17yearold girl inside Police Headquarters on the same floor as the chief of polices office. Today the prosecutor said a third victim has now stepped forward, saying best asked her to give him sexually explicit pictures. In 2007 best cornered a 20yearold female cadet who he supervied in a closet at the Police Academy where he groped and kissed her against her will. Then in 2008 inside the Fifth District Police Headquarters prosecutors say best sexually harassed and touched a female employee. Best was demoted from sergeant back to officer after that incident. New at 6 00, a Good Samaritan tells us its not the fist time hes had to rush out of his house to help after a bad accident. News4 broke the story about fires at metro tonight the National Arson and canine memorial station is wrapped in a tarp to hide the damage from vandalism. The memorial depicts a firefighter next to a labrador retriever. Overnight it was sprayed with blue paint and the letters kkk. Large piles of trash were dumped in the back lot of the firehouse. Two teenagers are fighting for their lives after a fiery crash in great falls. They were in a car that veered off georgetown pike after the driver swerved to avoid a deer. Northern Virginia Bureau chief julie carey spoke with a neighbor who says its not the first time hes had to rush out to help. Reporter you can see the path cut by the honda civic as it came flying off georgetown pike coming to rest right here where it rolled over and then things got even worse when it burst into flames. It was around 12 30 this morning when john was awakened by the sound, a sound hes heard before. I heard a noise, a huge crash, i immediately looked out the window and saw a car upside down over there. Reporter he dress and raced outside, but by that time the car was on fire flames shooting up through the trees. The driver and three of the four passengers had escaped but one woman was trapped inside. Fennell and the driver searched for a way to get her out. Screaming in the car, he and i managed to reach in and grab her shirt and then find a hand and pull her through a window gap that was about this big. And meanwhile its getting really hot. It melted all the wires right above. The flames were probably 35 feet high. Reporter rescue crews hat rolled up by then and took over the scene. The 19yearold pulled from the car was eventually airlifted to a burn center. Police say the 26yearold driver who was treated and released from the hospital said he had to swerve to avoid a deer. Today reminders of the horror are everywhere. The skid marks, the. L tree. Fennell said he neve thought of his own safety. You cant walk away from somebody screaming in a burning car but the last thing you want to do is go up to a burning car. Reporter deer are a constant danger on georgetown pike. Fennel fennell sid that is the second time a vehicle has crashed into his yard and hes had his own runins with deer. Thats a deer bouncing off the front of my car. Reporter this dent right here . Yes. Reporter hes hopeful the victims of the crash make it and recover. Have you been thinking act these victims much today . All day. I didnt i went in the house at about 1 30 and i just sat on the couch. I didnt sleep a wink. It really shakes you. Reporter now, the young people were all from the district of columbia. They were visiting friends out in herndon and returning home. Two are suffering from serious injuries. A third 19yearold also hospitalized the driver and the front seat passenger were both treated and released. Police say no charges had yet been filed. The maryland man who crushed two Police Cruisers with his dump truck is not competent to stand trial. The incident happened in early january in a Shopping Center in glenarden and was caught on surveillance video. Two Prince Georges County Police Officers were standing nearby and were almost hit. Gene brandon was charged with attempted murder last month, but after the judges ruling hell be sent to a Mental Health hospital for treatment and wont stand trial. He claimed the officers killed his brother. Doug were all interested in the strategic timing and when its going to hit and how much its going to be and when its going to be over. Okay. It wont be a lot. It wont impact traffic all that much unless you live well to the north and west. And it will all be gone by this time tomorrow. Doesnt sound too bad. Back to the west around cincinnati, thats what were waiting for. We have drier air from the north. It will be a while before this rain and snow moves in. Once it does it should be chaining over the all snow. Thats why we have a Winter Weather advisory. Down here everybody to the west these are the areas of biggest concern. Especially the areas in pink. Thats a winter storm warning. Thats issued with potential of 4 or 5 inches of snow. D. C. Not in the advisory. That means we wont see enough for advisory criteria but were still going to have the potential for some issues in the morning. Reston camera, no problems right now. Cloud cover. Theyll continue to increase. Temperatures well above freezing. 52 in d. C. 48 gaithersburg. 54 in culpeper. With temperatures like this it will start as rain. Once the temperatures come down, it may change to snow. Because of this the road temperatures are on the warmer side and that will help a lot as we move through the next 12 to 24 hours. By 3 00 a. M. Future weather showing rain moving in now. Different than what it was last night. Again, rain warmer weather. By 7 00, the cold air will start to move on in here. As it does it will change the rain to snow in the d. C. Metro area frederick, hagerstown martinsburg, Leesburg Gaithersburg all seeing the snow. Could come down fairly heavily at times. Around 10 00 a. M. Starting to see that changeover right around d. C. To the south, waldorf, Southern Maryland quantico Fredericksburg Culpeper this is mostly a rain event for you. Not worried about your area much at all. Mostly to the north and west we have to worry about. Even around 1 00 snow to the north. Heres what youll get, mostly rain to the south. Under an inch including d. C. Annapolis, bowie, crofton, Prince William county fredericksburg 1 to 3 inches around warrenton, luray, gaithersburg. Again, 1 to 3 in loek rised spots but mostly 1, maybe 2 inches there. The impact area will be the high toast the north and west. This is where were going 3 to 5 inches especially in some of the higher elevations. Heads up along i 81. Any of the back roads, the hilly back roads, thats where well see some big problems. Montgomery county Loudoun County some moderate impact there, so yes, we may see some school delays, maybe some school cho sures from this too. High of 51 on sunday. The attorney for uva student Martese Johnson just spoke to reporters but he did not take any questions. Instead he read a short statement from martese. Here is part of what he had to say. As the officers held me down one thought raced through my mind how could this happen . My head lay bloody but unbound. I still believe in our community. I know this community will support me during this time. I trust that the scars on my face and head will one day heal but the trauma from what the abc officers did yesterday will stay with me forever. Ambassador caroline kennedy. Japanese Public Television reports a resident of okinawa was arrested for making bomb threats against the u. S. Embassy in tokyo. Hes also considered a possible suspect in threats against kennedy phoned into the embassy last month. Today president obama told Prince Charles americans are quite fond of the royal family. The rain will make its way in from the west. It will come down and bring cooler air and help change the rain over to snow as we move on through the day tomorrow. Heres what to expect tomorrow morning. Again, snow for the a. M. Rush. This is huge. Minimal impact on the road especially in the d. C. Metro area and all of this before 12 00. Then i think just about everybody changes over to just plain rain. But there will be some of you that do have some higher impacts. Veronica and i have been looking at this all day. Easier to get snow between 32 and around 33 34 degrees, but our temperature range tomorrow 32 to 35. Take a look at our impacts in the areas shaded in yellow. This is where well see moderate impacts, high impact in the red area. What that means is we could have isolated delays around Marshall Leesburg chantilly, sterling Gaithersburg Clarksburg higher impact area i think delays would be more likely, maybe a cancellation or too, martinsburg to lubbocksville, thurmont frederick, maryland. Of course the temperatures will be right around 32 to 35 and improving very quickly from 7 00 a. M. To 9 00 a. M. Thats when we get out of the snow window. Good news there is once again you may see snow out there for a little while, grassy surfaces cars but once the rain starts that will help to melt the snow and by tomorrow night you might not have anything at all. We still have the Winter Weather advisory posted goes into effect overnight through 2 00 tomorrow. Winter storm warning, this is the area to the north and west that has the greatest impact. News4 transportation reporter adam tuss has learned about several fires on handrails at two stations along the new silver line. We first posted the story this afternoon on the nbc washington app. Adam now youre learning this was a problem metro knew about before these stations opened. Reporter thats right, chris. This happened twice in the last couple of weeks, one time here at the Tysons Corner station, another at the greensboro station and it also happened during the construction of the silver line. And thats why metro is now calling this problem systemic. Its hard to picture unless you see it for yourself. But underneath the handrails at metro stations there are lights that are built in. And here along the silver line some of those lights have been overheating and catching fire. This being a new station you kind of surprised when stuff is breaking already, but a handrail starting on fire was not really in the things you thought would occur. Reporter heres a picture we got of one of the handrails after a recent incident. You can see the charred sections of handrail. No one was hurt in any of these incidents. Does it worry you at all . If its a handrail it could be Something Else . Yeah possibly because youre walking up and down the steps. Reporter its important to remember while metro runs the silver line it did not build the silver line. The metropolitan Washington Airport Authority built the line and metro says its going to hold them accountable for this work. Now tonight we did receive a statement from the airports authority. They say this is a warranty issue and theyre going to be working with metro on the problem. Back to you. Target has agreed to pay millions of dollars to customers as part of a settlement from that massive data breach in 2013. Today a u. S. District judge granted a preliminary approval of that settlement. If its formally approved target se there will be a notification process so customers understand how to submit a claim. Victims who can prove they lost something in the data breach may be eligible for up to 10,000. This impacted as many as 110 million people. Finally some answers tonight for the family of a murdered Prince Georges County woman. Investigators believe they found the man who killed crystal anderson. Our bureau chief Tracee Wilkins has more reaction from the victims mother who describes how shes been waiting for this day to come. Reporter theres a major break in a cold case. Charles county grand jury has returned an indictment for murder. Reporter during this press conference detectives who spent years reviewing evidence and talking to witnesses finally have a suspect. After 3 1 2 years of continuous and detailed investigation, the detectives linked Raymond Posey to crystals disappearance and murder. Reporter she was 29yearold crystal anderson. Her family showed up en masse wearing and displaying peg churs of her in life. In the corner sits her unconsolable mother who nearly four years later i cant replace her. Nothings going to replace her. Reporter is still nursing open wounds. He robbed me of a beautiful, beautiful daughter. Reporter she explained how she felt when her first born went missing in august of11. For months i searched for my child. And i couldnt find her. And i looked out the door and said oh god, the world is too big. Where could she be . Reporter how she felt when her remains were discovered six months later scattered in a Charles County park. So to have her come home in bits and pieces yes, he robbed me too. Reporter robbery was the motive according to police. And as far as angela is concerned, 22yearold Raymond Posey iii made off with her fortune. Theres a hole thats left in my heart. Reporter one thing her daughters killer did not get away her ability to forgive. So she had this to say about the suspect. I am going to pray for his family, for his safety. Reporter detectives say while they know what this suspect was robbing crystal anderson for, they are not releasing that information to the press because they believe there are witnesses out there who also know and can help to corroborate their case. Theyre asking anyone with information to give them a call. In Charles County im Tracee Wilkins, news4. Turning a day of mourning into one of unity. Better news on several americans being watched for ebola. Hospital officials in nebraska say all five aid workers being monitored there remain healthy and one of the worker who is had been in a biocon tanment unit has been released from that isolation. All of the workers have been exposeded to ebola in sierra leone when one of their colleagues came down with the virus. That colleague is being treated at the National Institutes of health and was still in critical condition. American university is holding a University Forum tonight after racial comments were found on a social network. The posts were discovered on yik yak. We dont know exactly what the posts said. Even some students dont know. But those we spoke with said they were made last month and were in reference to the unrest in ferguson. Tonights forum starts a little after 8 00 in ward five. Reporter investigators say they dont know what started the fire on southampton drive in springfield, virginia, but they are focused on the back of the home and the basement. 56yearold paul church tied in the fire. His three roommates got out. Suzy rodgers lives right behind the house. Just very large rolling flames just bright orange just coming out everywhere. Reporter firefighters allowed a news4 camera behind the house to show us how the secondfloor back deck collapsed right as firefighters got out of the house for their own safety. It was an aggressive tay ai tack from outside to inside. Reporter firefighters pulled paul church from an upstairs bedroom window. The 56yearold was already unconscious. There was two of them and they were, like, on either side carrying them like this and he was laid across them. I think its very very sad, very tragic and just absolutely incredible. Reporter Fairfax County fire tells us that the home did, in fact have working smoke alarms that did go off this morning. In springfield, virginia Kristin Wright news4. New at 6 00 d. Ive noticed a significant change in a lot of their personalities. Their ability do more work. Hes almost like a celebrity to the children. Really any snow that we get tomorrow will be out of here pretty much by tomorrow night. Most of us will not even have any snow left in our yards by tomorrow evening. This evening not bad, sunset at 7 19. But we have some cloud cover. 49 degrees by 7 00 temperatures dropping to about 42 by 11 00. Still hard to get snow at that temperature. So we need to go down even more than that. I thats why i think well start off as rain. 48 in gaithersburg 44 in huntingtown, 50 degrees in ft. Belvoir. Were on the mild side yes, below average but mild when you consider we have a storm moving in here. Rain and snow mixing in down around roanoke where the temperature did drop into the upper 30s. Once the rain starts to fall it actually help to cool the atmosphere. Thats why we expect that transition from rain to snow. Look at 3 00 a. M. All rain around 3 00 a. M. But as i mentioned once it starts to fall it cools the atmosphere and you have the snow around 7 00 a. M. Notice writ it is though Loudoun County, Frederick County county Washington County but to the south, Fredericksburg Culpeper potentially all rain even around 10 00 a. M. Our snow is out of here by around noon tomorrow, northeast in the d. C. Metro area. Its going to be a little different to the knot and west where we could see 3 to maybe 5 inches toward frederick. 60 degrees on saturday. Theres our good day. 51 on your sunday 47 on monday. Those are some of my best friends from freshman year in college, so it will be interesting, it will be fun, and i have a lot of respect for that program and coach bennett and all those guys. So it will be a lot of fun playing against them. Certainly hes explosive, he can get it going and hes a lefty. Well have to be ready for him. Hes a confident young man in the right way but hes humble too. You know it will be im sure exciting for everybody. Bffs no more.
