Jim, weve been expecting to possibly hear from Tony Robinsons parents. Instead it was that teens uncle who spoke out on the parents behalf. Robinsons mother andrea irwin, was there and her brother pointed out the fact that tonys mom is a white mother now coping with the death of her black son. He also stress ld he wants the protests which have drawn thousands of people to the streets of madison since saturday to remain peaceful. We are not proponents of antipolice. I encourage everybody to show support because this is a universal issue. Matt kenny is the white officer who shot robinson friday. Police say kenny fired after robinson assaulted him in an apartment and also after robinson reportedly had assaulted someone else. Madisons police chief has not accused the officer of any wrongdoing while offering his condolences to robinsons family saying everyone mourns the loss. The Wisconsin Department of justice is investigating. More Police Officers in our area are starting to wear body cameras. Montgomery county police are the latest of the local Police Forces to test them. This pilot study starts in a couple months. Details about how marylands wiretap law may need to be changed in order for this to happen. Dallas starsy . Reporter wendy, the chief says this Pilot Program is going to happen but moving forward there are a lot of questions. Like you said, the wiretap law, questions about privacy and who can get a hold of that video. This is video from a body camera being worn by a Laurel Police officer. The camera records the officers interactions with the public. Montgomery county plans to start a Pilot Program, but the chief says there needs to be an exemption to marylands wiretap law, which requires someones permission to be recorded. Its clear, you get their consent or you dont record. Reporter and there are privacy concerns. When can police use them . When should they be turned off . Should they be used when police go into someones home . And can these videos be released to the media or the public . The key is its in the policy and making sure that its always on that its always recording. Reporter Andre Barnhart says he walked away from a life of crime but now as a homeless man living in a Montgomery County shelter hes been brought up on various charges, all of them, he says, have been dismissed. Every officer has to be responsible for his actions even 100 more than that because theyre being filmed. Reporter police chief tom manger plans to start a Pilot Program in may or june equipping up to 100 ausmsers with cameras at a cost of nearly 100,000. A felony neglect case against a couple in virginia is going to be presented to a grand jury. Jasmine and Adam Alexander are accused of leaving their 9monthold child, a daughter unattended in her crib for 16 hours. Police say it happened last october. When the couple finally went to check on the child, the girl was dead. New testimony revealed today that an adultsized comforter was found in the crib with the child even though a medical examiner could not determine what caused the death, prosecutors argue that the baby was left in a dangerous situation for many much too long. There are new details tonight from police on the investigation into how a Fairfax County inmate died while in custody. Officers say they have interviewed more than 50 people about what happened to Natasha Mckenna last month. Sheriffs deputies restrained mckenna and then used a taser on her when she resisted officers. They were trying to transport her to another facility. She died five days later. Police also say they will not be releasing any video of that incident before their criminal review is thousands of felons who have been described as the worst of the worst are off the streets tonight after a nationwide immigration sting. Immigrations and enforcement officers arrested more than 2,000 undocumented immigrants. Reporter the video was reportedly recorded this weekend and posted to youtube by unheard, a group that describes itself as an alliance of africanamerican students. For that to be said and chanted and memorized by someone, a group of people thats so predominant on campus really hurts. Reporter the university has severed all ties and affiliations with the fraternity. We send messages that are very strong and very clear. Reporter members have until midnight tomorrow to remove their belongings from the sae house on campus and o. U. s president hope theys dont stop there. Id be happy if they left the university as students and were no longer students . You betcha. I bead happy. We dont have any room for racists and bigots at this university. Id be glad if they left. Reporter this afternoon the sae National Organization announced its closed the o. U. Chapter and suspended all of its members. As it relates to other sanctions for the individuals who are involved in the video, we completely support that and endorse that because there are repercussions for behavior like this which is completely unacceptable. Back to you. 40 people are in the hospital tonight after an amtrak train headed for Union Station derails in north carolina. That train collided with a tractortrailer that got stuck on the tracks while it was trying to make a turn. Three train cars derailed and all of the injuries are considered minor. Reporter that intersection was the scene of the crime, an incident that didnt end until the bmw driver drove off with that jogger on the hood of the car. Much like the woman with this stroller the jogger had the signal when he entered this crosswalk just after 10 00 saturday morning. But a bmw turn ong to 10th street north had to slam on its brakes to avoid hitting him, stopping just inches short. As a reaction verbal exchange. The driver was not happy with that. Reporter police say thats when the road rage kicked in. Reporter police say 65yearold Jeffry Fisher reacted by pulling forward before the jogger had cleared his path. Hes carried about 20 to 30 feet down the road, the driver slams his brakes to get him off his vehicle. Reporter luckily, police say, the jogger wasnt injured. A witness got the car license plate and Police Tracked the driver down. Fisher is charged with attempted unlawful wounding. So this is a great example of how to be visible to a car. Reporter at the Pacers Running store up the street tails of near misses between joggers and cars arent unusual. Thats why they tell joggers this. Never, ever assume the cars see you. You always want to be proactive as well. If it means trying to make eye contact with the car thats making a righthand turn even if you have the right of way, thats a smart thing to do. A search for a group of atv rider who is surrounded a d. C. Police officer. Police say the officer was trying to stop a woman from starting up her atv on clifton street yesterday evening but he was quickly surrounded by 40 other veiders who drove towards him and started kicking his cruiser. Com and search illegal atvs. A boy from virginia who was injured from a sledding accident could be going home as soon as this week. We spoke to the family of 6yearold denston shump. They tell us that talked to his family. They tell us hes making great improvement. Back in january, that boy was hit by a car while sledding down a neighbors driveway in mclean, virginia. The injuries were so severe that doctors placed him in a coma. The future of streetcars in the district is in jeopardy even though the new system is not carrying passengers yet. There are concerns about how safe it might be and the cost. As our tom sherwood reports now, the mayor said she will decide soon whether that long delayed project can be saved. How are you . For more than eight years the city has been developing a costly streetcar system that now may be abandoned before the first passenger rides it. Mayor bowser was besieged today with Media Questions about the citys troubled streetcar system. New ddot director suggested friday the whole system could be canceled for safety and other reasons. What i dont support is a system that doesnt go all the places that it should that isnt safe or doesnt work. Reporter bowser and the ddot director said they would await a thirdparty transit review before bowser crushed her 2016 budget by april. Theyre going to give me a report out at the end of this week with their preliminary recommendations. Streetcar is years behind schedule with more than 200 million spent on the first a street line alone, and it still cant pass safety rules for street cars, power lines, and street tracks and adjacent traffic. Federal investigators say they have Just Launched a go team to investigate a potentially explosive ship collision. It happened in texas. Two massive vessels were told ran into each other in the Houston Ship Channel this afternoon. Some flammable liquid has been leaking from one of the ships in the crash. You can see some of the foggy conditions that exist because of it. This is the second time in less than a two ships in that channel have crashed. Back to you. Some scary moments on a metro platform. A guy was stupid drunk and stumbled and fell into a moving train and got knocked back onto the platform. It is a troubling trend. Passengers who metro are too drunk to ride. Our transportation reporter adam tuss has our report. Reporter about 6 00 at night at the East Falls Church station march 26th. This intoxicated rider doesnt realize hes getting too close to the moving train. He hits the train then hits the platform. If that wasnt bad enough he got a ticket. He falls on the platform and was found there, you know, several minutes later by Transit Police and was clearly intoxicated in public so he did get a citation. Reporter hes lucky thats all he got. He was not seriously hurt. Then sunday march 1st right here at the mt. Vernon square station, a frightening incident on the platform. Look at the bottom left on your screen. A metro rider stumbling around the platform he cease seemingly trying to get on the train as the doors open but then he falls in between two trains. Passengers try to get the attention of the train operator but within seconds the train starts moving. Marco pierre is the man in the video waving his hands and putting his hands on his head in disbelief as the train pulls away. We showed him the video today, the first time hes seen it. Im thinking the worst. I didnt want to step to the edge of the platform after and look down. Reporter turns out this rider was extremely lucky. He managed to crawl into a space known as the area of refuge under the platform. The train pulled away and seemed like it was taking forever to leave the station and we all walk up and look over the edge and somebodys like oh my god, hes alive. Reporter the riders help him up and the man refuses any more help and walks away. Metro says you absolutely can be too drunk to ride. At the mt. Vernon square station, adam tuss news4. A local couple encountered an unexpected magical moment on their wedding day. But it led to a big regret and now theyre trying to fix it. And they need your help.
