Troops the usual waiver from prosecution and the like. Unless karzai does sign, dempsey and his commander, president obama, say no u. S. Troops will stay. U. S. Nato allies told defense secretary, chuck hagel today, their 5,000 troops wouldnt stay either. All u. S. Forces pulling out is what most americans want according to recent polls. Now, all the troops might be home by christmas. Its karzais call. Karzais hinting he wants to make the call until after his reelection run in april. A senate panel is exploring the relationship between sexual assaults in the military, post Traumatic Stress disorder and suicide. The latest statistics from the pentagon show there is an epidemic of sexual assaults in the military. But victims are often too afraid to tell their supervisors. At a hearing today, Service Members testified about personal experiences after their own sexual assaults. My world as i knew it was falling apart. I feared being blamed and retaliated against. I was embarrassed. It was instance after instance of a failed system when i i became ostracized, singled out, publicly shamed, disciplined for getting treatment and treated as though i was the one who did something wrong. Kenyon says she was raped twice in the army and discharged in 2006. New developments now in a deadly pedestrian accident in Montgomery County an elderly man hit and killed by a bus in silver spring. The bus was headed north on 29. At the same time, the elderly man was crossing 29 towards the Shopping Center here. Police say thats when the bus hit him. Officers are reconstructing the accident to find out how this happened and to answer questions like, did the man use the crosswalk and did he have the right of way . What happened . We talked to a woman who works near this intersection. She did not see the crash, does not know what happened but is concerned this is a problem intersection. That is very sad. From what ive i kind of cross sometimes and i time the lights but the crossing lights dont work that well. I think once you get to the middle to get across the other side, that light when you press the button, i dont think it operates that light. Reporter the man was taken to the hospital where he died. The children and adults on the bus were not hurt. Were told another bus came and picked them up and took them back to school. A postal worker threatened, jumped, beaten with a gun on his way to work in d. C. Some say the suspects backed off after the man started to pray. Pat collins work with people who live in the area, hes near the scene tonight. Reporter hes not only a postman, hes a pastor. He prayed out loud for the gunmen to let him go. His prayers answered. He is a popular postman. My mom adores him. Been around for years. Reporter when they heard what happened to him, people in the neighborhood most upset. Its sad to see Something Like that happen. When we heard about it, we devastated. Why harm him . Reporter this is how police and sources familiar with the case tell the story. The scene, the 200 block of webster street northeast. The pastor postman that neighbors call the rev is out delivering mail when all of a sudden a van pulls up behind him. Two guys get out of that van. They have a mask on and they have a gun and force the rev out of the van. You know what we want, they say. What did you do with the package . What did you take out of the package . The rev doesnt know what theyre talking about. They start hitting him in the head with that gun. One of them takes the muzzle of the gun and puts it up to the face of the rev and says, im going to kill you. Tell me where its at. Now, get this. Thats when they say the postman pastor starts to pray. He prays out loud over and over again. Thats when they say the suspects back off. They bind him up induct tape, drive him to a nearby apartment and toss him out onto the pavement. So in the end, what did these robbers get . Well, they got his wallet, they got some credit cards and they got 35 in cash. Now, the post office is offering a 50,000 reward in this case. Live in northeast, pat collins, news4. Thank you, pat. The rewards offered in two recent attacks on mail carriers in our area are indeed significant. 50,000 for information about yesterdays assault in northeast. 100,000 in a murder of tyson barnett. That happened in Prince Georges County last november. The news4 i team looked into the payoff payoffs and found in all of 2013, the Postal Service only gave out 138,000 in rewards. Theres new reaction today to a poll by nbc4 and others in the race for d. C. Mayor. That poll shows mayor vincent gray ahead in the race but it is not all good news for the incumbent. The major is leading with 28 appearance of the votes to 20 appearance for muirial bowser. That is in the washington informer poll conducted by a college. Twothirds of the drik voters in the survey say it is time for a new mayor. That is in part because of the ongoing federal probe into mayor grays election four years ago. Ive apologized for what happened in the campaign. Ive said all i know to say. I dont know what else to say. I said i didnt do anything and will do it again. The polls suggest a challenger could get enough antigray votes to catch the mayor. He is said to have done a great job at mayor and counts on victory. One of a few controversial figures vying for the district 24 post, Prince Georges County bureau chief Tracee Wilkins joins us live on this case. We talked with a few candidates tonight that hope the public will give them another chance. 11 candidates are running for three maryland house of delegates seats of Prince Georges County district 24. Incumbents Carolyn Howard and Michael Vaughan have raised the most money and insiders expect them to easily win their seats leaving a third seat open to some familiar names. Im the right person for that job. Reporter former attorney Tiffany Austin once held a former seat but she was ousted after she was found guilty of stealing money from the general assembly. Her record was expunged and she wants back in. Voters are aware what has taken place and they know we have Unfinished Business that needs to be addressed in the state of maryland 24th district. Today the National Hispanic Bar Association joined those announcing it would pull its 2015 convention out of phoenix. Brewer has until saturday to sign or veto the measure. Gay marriage is making news across the country today. In texas, a federal judge struck down that states ban on gay marriage but hes leaving the ban in place until an Appeals Court rules later this year. In prince leon county in virginia, the Circuit Court clerk is appealing a ruling that called virginias ban on gay passenger unconstitutional. A pal just released by the public religion institute, it finds a majority of americans, 53 appearance, now support gay marriage. That same survey put support at only 32 appearance just 10 years ago. There are new developments from ukraine tonight. The u. S. Is once again crashing with russian president vladimir put putin, secretary of state kerry warning Vladimir Putin to be careful after he ordered military drills near the ukrainian border. A Major College accused a jury in Fairfax County has decided a former Church Worker should qgo to jail for three months in his role in a deadly road rage incident. Lee cena was found guilty in assault. Obrien died last april a few days after the men fought in a parking lot following a traffic altercation. A judge will take the jurys recommendation and sentence cena in may. Tonight, the federal government is suing one of the largest for Profit College chains in the country accusing it of predatory student loan practices. The Consumer Financial bureau accused Itt Educational Services of pushing students into high cost loans and making misleading promises about job prospects after graduation. In a statement, itt said the bureaus claims are without merit and promised to defend itself. News4 checked and found a degree from itt can cast anywhere from 40,000 to 100,000. Itt marketed itself as improving consumers lives, it really was just improving its bottom line. The lawsuit seeks restitution and fines against itt. Houses democrats are hoping something called a discharge petition will force a vote to raise the minimum wage. Gop leadership that refused to allow a vote on a measure raising the minimum wage to 10. 10 an hour. If democrats collect the signatures of 218 lawmakers it would force a floor vote. Recent polls show a majority of americans believe the minimum wage should be raised. Democrats are hoping that the polling will lead some republicans to sign the poet and force a vote. Thats really where this money is going helping upgrade the power system so longer trains can run. That fee affects 75,000 owners of hybrid vehicles who said they were being unfairly punished for trying to do the right thing. We want people to buy hybrid vehicles. Theyre buying them, more efficient, less emission into the environment. It makes a lot of sense. The repeal takes effect july 1st. Any whos already paid will get a refund. She was hit by a rideon bus outside the entrance to the r k Rockville Metro last night. The 62yearold died after entrance to the hospital. She worked as a housekeeper and going to meet her husband after the accident happened we will need some time and will figure out how to make. These problems and no other person suffer the way we did. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash and dont think speed is the problem and they are looking into the bus operator and he has not been charged. A teenager, his name was jack chan, 15 years old, lived in fairfax station, virginia. He died at the scene on the vre manassas line on clara barton road. Passengers were stuck there three hours. Because the investigation is still going on, vre ran fewer trains this afternoon. Parents packed a courtroom today watching for justice watching the women accused of abusing their children face a judge. They ruled there is problem knowled probable cause. Coworkers recount iing alleged abuse against children. The attorney for the alleged victims families says there could be many more charges to come down. That attorney is James Mccourt and said on the phone the wheels of justice are firmly in motion and we are pleased with the judges ruling today and represented more than a dozen parents of the child victims and didnt want to show our faces. We had 22 marines and one navy kormcor corpsman. Reporter lifesized photos from an artist who never knew any of her subjects, from photos from the families and 20 two years in dramatic detail. The gear is rough but the face is not rough, perfect. Reporter the eyes of freedom is meant to draw people in to the gaze of each marines eyes, to the smiles on their faces and sacrifice of their lives. I know how it affected them. Theyre very proud of him. Reporter as much as this is an exhibit that tells a story, its also a memorial, an opportunity for us to remember all who served. Each painting is illuminated by a candle for each mans picture. And a company placed a pair of each marines own combat boots at the paintings bases. Family members leave items in the boots, photos of the marine, photos of their daughter, wives, childhood photos. Reporter the Marine Corps Museum says the memorial is a tribute to every Service Member from every war. For these men who sacrificed so much so young, coming here has special meaning. The eyes of freedom exhibit is at the Marine Corps Museum through next thursday march 6th. Just about an hour ago, nbc4 celebrated black History Month with a Program Honoring some local leaders. Our own Chris Lawrence emceed the event that took place in our studios. The Chamber Choir sang including ann and Michael Bland who own several Mcdonalds Restaurants in the area, also literary activist, e Burton Miller and said black History Month is still important to celebrate. History is an ongoing thing not just in the past. What happens now, were still telling the american story. Africanamericans have always been part of the american story from the time this country started. The group, covenant house, received a 5,000 check for their outstanding work.
