To be frank, its probably its much worse than i expected and maybe even publicly we have been talking about. Metro general manager Paul Wiedefeld with a sobering assessment of the Transit Agency today. Those were his first Public Policy remarks since taking over metro. Wiedefeld took questions for about an hour at the National Press club downtown. Adam tuss was there and joins us live from metro center. So adam, we know there are a lot of issues to get to but was the overarching focus for wiedefeld . Reporter i think the over arching issue was you cant focus on the big things. You really have to focus on the small things, the nuts and bolts of the Transit System. You have to look there first before you can start loong at other areas. He talked a lot about that and talked about way that is he would b take care of the small issues first to get metro back on track. So, adam, what kind of changes can riders expect to see right away, the most immediate changes . Reporter one of the things he talked about was setting up a new website where you can track the projects going on. Something like a lighting project or a station elevator or an escalator being replaced. This is going to be trackable for the public. You will be able to see in two months well have this done, we can judge you. Yes. We started our website today, a customer report, a county system basically. Reporter yes, riders are now going to be able to actually go online to metros website, see which projects are happening around the system and get a status report on those projects. Thats something metro really hasnt detailed in the past, but this general manager in all truthfulness is being and frank, and he wants to be transparent with riders and he feels like this is a good way to do that. Adam, any talk about shutting down the system for long periods of time in order to speed up some of the muchneeded repairs . Reporter yeah. And so thats one thing that metro has, frankly, kicked around for quite some time. Possible longterm shutdowns to get the most bang for the buck. Today the general manager was saying that is definitely not off the table. How you would do that or the specifics of how that would be done, that all still needs to be ironed out, but Something Like the Weekend Service which a lot of riders tell him frankly is just unusable when you go into a station on the weekend and you have to wait 30 minutes for a train to go a couple stops, that really starts to become unusable for a lot of riders. So theres the potential to go in there and shut down entire lines or stations or something along those lines, get a lot of work done in a short amount of time to get the most bang for the buck. Well see what changes are coming. All right. Riders will be waiting and watching. Adam tuss, right now when you turn on the tap water in d. C. , arlington, or parts of Fairfax County you may get a slight taste or smell of chlorine. Theres nothing wrong, its just the annual Spring Cleaning of the water system. Its done every year to improve water quality. Thats why we let our customers know if they smell that in their water theres a reason. Its not a health and safety issue. Quite the opposite. Its to make sure the system is clean. The flush will continue through may 2nd. Well, its only march and its so nice. Doug, are we looking at breaking any records . I wouldnt mind breaking a record or two. Bring it. In order to break a record, we have to be near 80 degrees, so you see where im going here with this. You can see unsettled weather back to the west. A lot of cloud cover. I want to show you whats happening. Take a look at the wide picture. Some of the california mountains could pick up 100 inches of snow. 100 inches of snow before all this is said and done. What this is doing for us, its the jet stream taking all of moisture and the warm air our way. It is going to get very warm here. Most of the moisture actually stays down to the south, down around houston, down around louisiana. Theyre expected to get upwards of five to ten inches of rain. For us its just the warm air we see.
