Well explain more as to why we had a little more snowfall coming up in a couple minutes. Look at this. This is whats next for us. The refreeze. Icy conditions on area roads tonight. Hundreds of people were involved in crashes all over our region. Many main roads are now clear, but folks, we are not out of the woods just yet. News4 transportation reporter adam tuss s live in Fairfax County that saw some of the worst today. Adam . Reporter thats right, jim. And you know the concern now is absolutely about the refreeze thats coming later tonight. Lets take a look at some of the side roads here. This is glen din street in vienna plenty icy, slush on the roads. As we go through the night, it is going to get icy here. We went out to leesburg today, this was the scene there as truck after truck was coming in to pick up a mixture of salt and sand and get back out on the road. And the battle against this second round, this freeze is just beginning. Weve increased the numbers. We probably have close to 1,000 pieces of equipment in. Because of the fact that we got hit about four hours earlier and twice the amount of snow that we had predicted, well be working through the night, the subdivisions. And crews are still working. Take a look right here. Weve got the salt plow the salt truck coming through. Theyre going to do whatever they can do. Theyre putting the plows down on the ground to get whatever is stuck here on the ground off the roads. So its going to be a busy night, again, a salt and sand. And is vj mentioned, youve got to get the storm team 4 app to stay ahead of all of this stuff. Reporting live in vienna adam tuss news4. And we would love adams friend there on the side dancing. Even with the sun peeking through right now, some roads are still dangerous this afternoon. Chopper 4 flew over i270 this afternoon. Take a look. The crews had to shut down three of the lanes, because of an accident that involved four cars on the northbound side, just after the spur. You can see the delays that it caused. First 4 traffic reporter melissa melai is still up and running this afternoon. Weve got the sun out. How is it looking, melissa . A lot better. We had quite a mess this morning, tweeting about it putting it out on facebook. Take a look right now. This is as good as the beltway looked all day. You can see this is our only problem, a little slow and were talking 40 Miles Per Hour not 3, like this morning. This is the inner loop and outer loop here as you head through mclean 66 at Prince William parkway, completely fine now. In virginia taking a look at 95. 45 Miles Per Hour as you get to dale city. It opens back up, and youre completely clear if youre headed back out of town southbound there. Beltway at central avenue. No problems moving along nicely outer loop at colesville worst spot just about 40 Miles Per Hour. Northbound for the folks trying to get out of town before it starts icing over. Guys . Melissa, thanks for joining us in the p. M. While the snow caused closures and delays for many area school systems, several in Northern Virginia decided to open on time today. And now theyre apologizing for making students travel in some tough conditions out there. News4s Mark Segraves continues our Team Coverage now, just outside sleevewood Elementary School in falls church. Reporter hey, jim, a lot of upset parents, faculty and particularly students this morning. This is one of the hundreds of schools here in Northern Virginia that was open on time this morning, and as you said in hindsight now, School Officials here in fairfax, and in other districts, are apologizing, to students staff and parents. Unfortunately, we got it wrong today. Reporter while School Officials are now acknowledging the decision to open on time was a mistake, parents, students and teachers already knew that. This teacher, who didnt want to be identified spent nearly three hours trying to get to school only to find out most of her students didnt show up. A delay would have been perfect. Yeah. To kind of let the salt trucks come out and do their job. Reporter the trek to school was difficult across Northern Virginia where schools opened on time in Prince William county Loudoun County arlington, and here in fairfax. If we had only known that it was going to be like this we certainly would have made the call to cancel schools. Reporter now, many of the School Districts that were open this morning have cancelled afternoon and evening activities. We have a complete rundown at nbcwashington. Com, and as you can imagine, a lot of teachers and students didnt make it to school today. Coming up at 5 00 ill tell you what that means for students attendance records and for teachers paychecks. Bruce allen, team president. Dianna will join us with what this means for the redskins going forward. More breaking news now. Two years in jail. Thats the sentence given to former Virginia Governor Bob Mcdonnell for his conviction on corruption charges. Two years. Northern Virginia Bureau chief julie carey was in the courtroom during sentencing and joins us now live from richmond. Jules. Reporter well in september, i stood in this spot and told you Bob Mcdonnell became the first Virginia Governor in history to be convicted of felonies. Today he became the first Virginia Governor to be sentenced to prison time. He and his attorneys have told his right after the sentence was handed down out here outside the court they will file their appeal tomorrow of his conviction and his sentence. Now, that twoyear prison term handed down by judge james spencer, far lower than what the sentencing guidelines called for. The recommended term six to eight years. Now, prosecutors asked the judge for a significant sentence to send a strong message that the Governors Office is not for sale. Former governor mcdonnell and wife maureen were both convicted of bribery and corruption charges for trading the influence in the Governors Office in exchange for 177,000 in gifts and loans from business in jonnie williams. Bob mcdonnells defense attorney asked for an alternative sentence. They wanted him to do three years of community service. They called some 11 witnesses to the stabbed, including former democratic governor doug wilder. All of them begging the judge to show mercy. To give a more lenient sentence. Judge spencer called the case tragic from beginning to end and told the former governor a price must be paid. That price, in his estimation two years. But again, far lower than many of the former governors friends and family had expected. Hear now from the former governor and acting attorney dana uponty. I want to thank the court and judge spencer for the mercy he dispensed to me today. And i appreciate his efforts in listening to the witnesses and reading all the letters and papers and arriving at his judgment today. I also want to say that i disagree with the verdict. It was rendered by the jury in this case and that we intend to file our appeal to the United States Fourth Circuit court of appeals. No one is above the law. Not a high public official not even the highest public official in the state. And thats what this case was all about. Reporter now, the former first Lady Maureen Mcdonnell will be sentenced on february 20th. She was in the courtroom today. She sobbed as that sentence was handed down. Bob mcdonnell has been told to report to the bureau of prisons on february 9th. His attorneys are going to be seeking to keep him out on an appeal bond as they work through this court case. Something they call a marathon. Coming up on news4 at 5 00 youll hear from all three of Bob Mcdonnells sisters why they see this decision today as a partial victory. For now, reporting live from richmond im julie carey, news4. Thank you. We have mcdonnells full statement on nbcwashington. Com this evening. A neighborhood on edge. Here are the rules, region by region when it comes to clearing your sidewalks. Folks in Loudoun County have the shortest deadline. Residents there are required to shovel public sidewalks of snow and ice within six hours after the snow had stopped falling. D. C. Arlington, Montgomery County if you live anywhere in there, residents all have 24 hours to move all that snow. And prince georges county, that jumps to 48 hours. In Fairfax County and Prince William county there is no law requiring homeowners to shovel sidewalks. But, of course you want to do that anyway for safety sake if you can. Those jurisdictions with shoveling laws can impose fines, but theyre typically only enforced after a neighbor complains or if somebody reports of an injury. Jim and wendy, back to you. Thanks erika. A lot of times its the small ones that can be the trickiest. So we saw with carmageddon. This was no carmageddon, but the fact we had this occurring at just the right time during the morning rush it did have more moisture with the system and hence the higher totals. And because it was not the dry type of snow it stuck right away and made conditions awful out there for just commuting this morning. Weve got a lot more full explanation.
