John evans iii died today after he was stabbed while leaving the Deanwood Metro station in northeast. This happened near the fairgate. And police have released this picture of the man they say is connected to the case through surveillance video. With reaction from the victims mother and her message for the suspect. Shomari . Reporter well, jim and wendy, tonight that mother wants the suspect to turn himself in. We showed her a picture of the suspect on our nbc washington app, and she was stunned. She says that she desperately misses her son. She wants the suspect to turn himself in. Tonight police are searching for the suspect and will continue to tell you about it. Lets listen to what this mother has to say. I just feel empty. Reporter taraji wells is filled with sadness. Her son john evans was murdered in northwest d. C. Today. Its hard for any parent to go through Something Like this. Reporter in an only on 4 interview, she tells me her 15yearold son was stabbed inside the Deanwood Metro station when he passed through the fare gate and headed towards an escalator. He died at a hospital when was the last time you spoke to your son . This morning. I was sick. And i couldnt take him to his po me and said he would be back. Reporter his mom had recently moved to richmond, virginia to keep him away from the violence she says is here in the northwest d. C. He was in town for a court appearance. I just wish i would have went with him this morning. Reporter Police Released this Security Camera pictures of the suspect. Investigators believe john evans was stabbed when he and the suspect got in a fight while leaving the station. He just took a part of me that i cant get back. Reporter about two weeks ago, 15yearold devonte washington was shot and killed at the deanwood station. He was on his way to get a haircut for easter. Police arrested the suspect. There is too many children, black kids losing their lives for dumb stuff. And they really need to wake up and realize life is too short. Reporter and tonight police urge anyone with information about this case to give them a call. Investigators are offering a reward of up to 25,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. Live outside the d. C. Police headquarters, im shomari stone, news4. And were following some breaking news in annapolis tonight, where maryland lawmakers are pushing the deadline to pass some tougher rules for drunk drivers. Their session ends at midnight tonight. Dozens of laws and bills have been hurt here tonight. But they have not yet brought up noahs law, which would expand the use of ignition interlocks on drivers and drunk drivers vehicles. It hit a snag yesterday that we understand was ironed out in Conference Committee we understand that an amended version agreeable to both sides have been printed and is ready to be voted on as the clock tick downs to midnight now. A short time ago, i spoke to Maryland Governor larry hogan. He is a strong supporter of this law. You know, weve got a problem with drunk drivers and repeatedly having issues. I think this is something that is really going to help. I think its something there is almost unanimous support for both sides of the aisle. And a lot of people want to see it happen. And were hopeful were going to get it done. Reporter officer leotas parents have been here since 8 00 this morning. I talked to his father this afternoon. They said they are here. They will be here until midnight. But again, the feeling here is that there is agreement on both sides for the passage of this law. But again, we wont know. Mayor Muriel Bowser brought good news to a community in southeast today where a 7yearold girl was shot last week. Police have arrested 27yearold michael wis today. Officers saying that a stray bullet from his gun hit the little girl last friday as she was walking with her family on knox place. She is still in the hospital, but she is doing well. Mayor bowser walked those same streets today to talk to neighbors about the violence and to pray with them. New tonight, drivers got to voice some questions and concerns about that i95 express lane extension in virginia. That plan would bring the lanes eight miles north to the ead street area. Tonight drivers question what impact that would have from slug lines to bus service along the corridor. The project is expected to be completed some time next year. Starting on may 1, youre going to have to fork over a bit of cash if youre looking to get your first drivers license in the district. A new law requires 30 hours of driving school, eight hours of on the road training before you can even take the driving test. And the only place to get that training, private hundreds, even a thousand dollars or more. Today councilwoman mary chase said that doesnt seem right. Of course we want people to be trained to drive properly. But what will it mean for people modest means . Some of these courses can cost a thousand dollars or more. D. C. Schools used to provide drivers ed for a nominal fee, but they stopped in 2009. Cheh is going to bring this issue up in a hearing later this month. Ted cruz is so far behind the new york polls, he is already campaigning in california. The state has 172 delegates up for grabs in june. Virginia Governor Terry mcauliffe says he will not support a plan to use the electric chair as an alternative method for executions in the commonwealth. The governor vowed to veto any efforts by the General Assembly to change the Capital Punishment law. Lawmakers proposed making executions a backup because lethal injection scarce. An increasing number of pharmacies are refusing to provide them. Governor mcauliffe proposed an alternate measure which would keep the names of the pharmacies secret to protect them from public scrutiny. The more we learn about it, the scarier it gets. It can cause other forms of brain damage inba after birth. A former womans basketball coach with ties to maryland has been acquitted on sexual abuse charges. Bryce mckee was briefly an assistant coach for the university of maryland. But the charges stem from his time at zavier university. A player there accused him of groping her at his home. Today a kentucky judge found mckee not guilty of those charges. Mckee resigned from maryland in august after those charges were filed. An attorney for the player is calling this ruling sad. The sheriff of Anne Arundel County tonight strongly denies allegations that he assaulted his wife. Officers arrested sheriff Ronald Bateman last night after his wife called police to the couples home. According to charging documents, bateman did not hit his wife, but held her down on a bed and pushed her to the floor to get his money clip back. In a statement today, bateman said he will continue to work, but only in an administrative role. He took place, just a very emotional argument between a husband and wife. Sheriff bateman is charged with seconddegree assault. Next at 11 00, charged with bringing a semiautomatic rifle to a baby shower. How an attentive cop may have stopped a tragedy. Two metro stations in the heart of downtown could be getting new names. But one is getting a lot more support than the other. And d. C. s about to get a new National Monument. New at 11 00 tonight, a 21yearold man facing charges after police tell us he tried to take a loaded semiautomatic rifle into a baby hour in waldorf. Police say Rogerio Nowlin got into an argument and left to grab an ar15. Guests saw him walking back to the baby shower with the rifle. They locked the doors. Someone on the street saw him in the street with a gun and flagged down a nearby Police Officer to help. He tried to hide behind a vehicle. The officer was able to call him out. The weapon was eventually recovered. Investigators also say that gun was loaded with 27 rounds in it. A check also revealed the gun was reported stolen in north carolina. Well, this is a story that adam tuss brought to you first on 4. Should two metro renamed to better reflect the landmarks that are near them . Thats what metro will consider at a meeting on thursday. This proposal calls for the smithsonian station to add National Mall to its name for obvious reasons. But it also calls for foggy bottom to add Kennedy Center to its name.
