And avoids tsa workers and coast guard, 200,000 essential dhs employees, having to work without a paycheck. But House Speaker john boehner had a bad day pushing for three weeks of funding without defunding president obamas executive order on immigration that conservatives hate. That took the power of congress away from us. Reporter and 51 House Republicans said no to the boehner plan to send a message. You cant keep bypassing the constitution and bypassing congress. Reporter president obama gathered his dhs team tonight and urged congress to avoid any dhs disruption. There will be within seven days full funding for the department of Homeland Security. Reporter but thats not up to the democrats. The republicans who run congress have a week to find a way to weaken the obama order on immigration and satisfy conservatives without weakening Homeland Security. Many Homeland Security employees such as those that guard the nations borders, Staff Security checkpoints, would have remained on the job as you heard Steve Handelsman say. Congress would have likely granted retroactive pay to them but nothing is a given at this point. Heres some of what we saw on social media in the last few hours. Eleanor holmes norton. The house could easily pass clean bill to fund dhs for the year. It will take only a few republicans to join us and pass it. A woman who identified herself as a dhs employee tweeted, good thing ive been saving money to buy a car. Now when the government stops paying me come friday ill still be able to pay my bills. A blog on the official Homeland Security website claims that over 90 of tsa workers, about 50,000 employees, would continue to report to duty in the event of a shutdown. The blog entry impacts of a potential continuing resolution or lapse in appropriation say 6,000 civilian employees of the coast guard, threequarter of its total civilian force, would be furloughed with no guarantee of pay. We have that oneweek extension, but it is just one week. And it does affect a lot of people in this area. Youve talked to federal workers who have gone through this furlough thing before. For working families even missing a week or two of pay can be dire. That and again what we saw tonight wee saw things we havent seen before. Thats the concern. People do worry about getting paid. Bob mcdonnell was convicted of receiving lavish gifts from a businessman. Both are free pending appeal. A d. C. Rabbi has resigned his position after pleading guilty to secretly recording women in a ritual bath. The resignation will take effect a month from today. They put him on administrative leave but the school has paid him 26,000. Last week he pled guilty to 52 counts of voyeurism. New at 11 00, a fire breaks out at a home. Firefighters from alexandria pitched in to help put it out. The red cross and dash bus are helping people who are displaced, but theres no word on how it started or if anyone was hurt. And the latest attack happened just two nights ago right here behind this church but we start our report tonight at the church meks door. Prayers at the tower of praise Church International in bladensburg for three women sexually assaulted in the area over the last few months. We like the Police Though to really step up security of this neighborhood. Reporter the pastor says the church has also been repeatedly targeted by criminals. He put up surveillance cameras, but when they didnt capture a clearer image of the burglars he turned them off. We had our piano stolen sometimes our musical instruments. Reporter Police Believe the same man that sexually assaulted three women since september, the latest attack happened wednesday night behind the church next door. The victim is in her late teens. This composite sketch was developed after the first attack and the attacker was captured on surveillance video. Christian garcias mom owns the hair salon across the street. Its a concern. You know right here happening across the street. I do feel a little better that police have been in the area a little more patrolling more. Reporter Prince Georges County Police Detectives went door to door in the neighborhood handing out flyers. Many residents didnt even know there had been three sexual assaults all less than a mile apart. Were really concerned about this now. Now we have to watch, you know more than normally you know. Reporter now, officers tell me that they have already stepped up patrols here in this area where the attacks have happened. Theyre going to see more marked cruisers and theres also undercover officers operating in this area this is a high priority to get these cases solved. Police are looking for the person who shot a teenager in southeast d. C. It happened this afternoon on naylor road near the d. C. Charters school. Its not clear if the boy went to school there. Police have told us he could be as young as 14 years old. He was still breathing when officers arrived but they havent updated his condition. Tonight a state Department Official is back home in the district after spending three days in jail. Hes accused of going online to solicit a child for sex. Daniel rosen turned in both of his passports and posted a 25,000 bond. Hes a senior counterterrorism official but the judge ordered him to stay off the computer in addition to staying away from minor. A state Department Spokesman say they placed rosen on administrative leave but today his attorney assured the judge that rosen could continue to work while hes awaiting trial. Developing tonight, president obama is condemning the murder of a prominent Opposition Leader in russia. Boris nemtsov was shot as many as seven times while walking on a bridge near the kremlin. Nemtsov has been a vocal critic of president vladimir putin. This weekend he was supposed to take part in an opposition rally in moscow. One major bill that did not pass had to do with the rising heroin problem in the commonwealth. It would have allowed prosecutors to charge drug dealers with homicide. But in the wake of Bob Mcdonnells corruption trial lawmakers did put a 100 cap on people who wanted to do business in virginia. And lawmakers also okayed pay raises for teachers in virginia. A state Senate Committee is considering a bill to allow teenaged troops to have a drink in maryland. Thats sparking a lot of debate on our nbcwashington facebook page. The bill would allow bar and restaurants to serve beer and wine to 18 19 and 20yearolds on active duty. Critics are worried about drunk driving and saying it would encourage Service Members from other states to come drink in maryland. Lawmakers debated the bill in annapolis today. But because it violates federal statutes it puts those funds at risk. This would mean losing 32 million in federal highway funding. I do have an amendment asking for a waiver. I know we cant give up all that money. If the bill somehow passes it could go into effect as early as this summer. The fbi is now investigating how a d. C. Mosque was vandalized twice in one week. The first time someone broke into the ivy city mosque was monday but Police Thought it was linked to other disturbances in the northeast d. C. Neighborhood. Now theyre not sure. The mosque director says some time wednesday night or thursday morning vandals broke furniture and stole an iconic picture of mecca off the wall. Im beginning to think that it could have been a hate crime because that picture has a value to the muslim.
