other numbers have that at 35 and smeco is down to just over 200 customers. virginia dominion power is thanking canadian crews. the president of hydro one will be in virginia to meet with virginia dominion power. the meeting is set for 6:30. in all, virginia power has restored service to 95% of the 1 million customers whose service was disrupted by friday's storm. federal government offices are open, but employees can opt out for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework. only two d.c. public schools are closed today. they are ferebee hope and winston. montgomery college is closed. montgomery county public schools will release a full list of closures at 6:00 this morning. in fairfax county, eight schools still closed. they are annandale terrace element raeyt school, beech tree elementary, spring hill, mantua elementary school, and as well, stuart high school, wakefield forest elementary school, westlawn elementary and dunmory center. we'll have a full scroll at the bottom of your screen, so stay with us for that. right now, 4:32. we turn to meteorologist veronica johnson for a first look at the forecast. a little lightning driving in this morning. >> that's right, we had some storms last night. most of them stayed west of us but did deliver some damage. some trees were down and we're seeing high winds are the storms that came through around quantico. 68-mile-per-hour gusts reported shortly after 3:00. take a look at radar right now. we're talking about just rain now down in fredricksburg and a little west of leonardtown, just south there. all that will be making its way through the northern neck. but again, that was just west of our area. there were warnings in prince william county, stafford and charles about an hour and a half ago. 81 degrees is the temperature. uh huh, yeah. yeah, i know what time it is. 81 degrees. we're not going to see the temperatures cool much more before they rise quickly. by 9:00, normally i've been telling you noontime, 90 degrees, now 9:00, 10:00 this morning, close to 90 degrees, so heating up fast. a few clouds for the morning, hazy sunshine for the afternoon. very hot conditions for today. 100 degrees. that's the forecast for today with the heat index around 105. even at 5:00 p.m. this evening, 98 degrees for a temperature and there's a chance, isolated chance, that we could see a storm around the area. 100 for manassas, warrenton to culpepper, 100 degrees. frederick, maryland, 100 degrees. let's look at traffic now. >> not too bad on the beltway. inner loop and outer loop, all travel lanes are open and no serious delays on 495 in virginia. let's go to faulkier county, where we have a serious accident 29. all southbound lanes are shut down. luckily not a lot of delays in the surrounding area. looking great on 395. heading north on edsall road, no serious backups and looking good towards the 14th street bridge. about a 12-minute drive on the beltway to the 14th street bridge. so no major problems. a frantic search for a missing teenager in need of medication. take a good look. 17-year-old marquis correa is believed to be in the area of the ashburn village shopping center. he is 5'8", about 180 pounds. he was last seen wearing a red shirt, gray shorts, red hat and black shoes. if you have seen marquis or have any idea where he may be, call the loudoun county sheriff's office. today, police are expected to release the names of the officers involved in a deadly shooting. the shooting happened yesterday afternoon outside the urban barbecue off olney sandy spring road in olney. officers got a call about a man inside the restaurant with a gun, waving it at customers. police arrived, got the man out in order to talk to him, but they say that he would not drop his weapon. two officers fired shots at the man. he was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. both officers are on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. 4:35. "decision 2012" heating up today as president obama kicks off his first campaign bus tour. for the next two days, he'll make stops in pennsylvania and ohio. that tour is being dubbed "betting on america." the president headed to several northern ohio communities that were critical to his 2008 win and then on to another event. before heading out, president obama marked independence day at the white house. he thanked 25 military members for their service as they were sworn in as u.s. citizens in a naturalization ceremony. >> you displayed the values that we celebrate every fourth of july -- duty, responsibility, patriotism. >> aides say the president will focus on the economy during his bus tour and emphasize the contrast between himself and mitt romney. >> meanwhile, romney is calling president obama's health care law a big tax. he says the supreme court's decision backs him up. the republican presidential candidate made the comments to cbs news. the former massachusetts governor said the supreme court opinion makes it very clear that states have the power to pass a mandate or a penalty, but not the federal government. therefore, romney feels his state's similar health care mandate is constitutional. new this morning, a nuclear reactor is back online in japan. it's the first reactor to be restarted since last year's earthquake and tsunami. all 50 of the country's working reactors were shut off in the wake of the fukushima crisis. officials say the situation at the fukushima plant has stabilized, but it's going to take decades to safely decommission. the area around the plant remains off limits because it is a health hazard. well, even with the lights still out for a lot of folks in our region, we are feeling a little more patriotic power this morning after some pretty dazzling displays. thunderstorms did skirt the district, but they held off long enough for a capitol fourth concert and fireworks to go off without a hitch. hundreds of thousands made their way to the national mall for that annual show, which despite the heat, held a little extra meaning for some this year. >> it was great. we came out here after four days of no electricity and stress and getting out here and decompress and celebrate the nation's birthday. you couldn't have a better end for this. this is just a way to sit down and decompress. it's just great. put it all behind you. >> with temperatures that felt more than 100 degrees, emergency crews say there were some issues with heat stroke and dehydration, but everything otherwise was really a great success. >> a festive display of fireworks also lit up the sky over vienna, virginia. it followed a day of music, games and other activities celebrating the holiday. it's the town's fourth consecutive fireworks display on independence day since a fireworks mishap in 2007 left several spectators with very serious injuries. and if you weren't able to make it to one of the many displays in our area last night, you've got another chance to see some fireworks tonight. ashburn village rescheduled their fireworks for this evening. they moved them back so power crews could continue to repair storm damage. >> still have can't have it sticking out of your mouth like that. she broke her own record, apparently, of 41 hot dogs. she downed 45 in ten minutes. both walk away with $10,000 for being the fastest hot dog eaters in the world. >> we were talking about this earlier. so if we brought them in here, we could get you some, you know, like the little vienna sausages. some little piggies in a blanket. >> i could do case. george zimmerman gets another chance to try and get out of jail. plus, why if you were just a minute late to one city's fi this morning, a 10-year-old boy is dead. he was electrocuted while swimming. an 11-year-old boy is also on life support. officers say they were swimming between house boats in northeastern tennessee when they got shocked. several people tried to help the boys, but they were also hurt and all six people taken to the hospital here. investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what caused the electrocution. saving a life is apparently not good enough to save the job of a lifeguard who ran outside of his designated area to make a rescue. lopez was watching hallandale beach in miami monday when people started screaming about a swimmer drowning. lopez ran to help in the rescue, but in doing so, he left the zone that he was hired to patrol. lopez was fired almost immediately after returning to his perch. recently, two other lifeguards say they were fired for the same reason, and four other guards decided to resign over the policy. >> i was prepared for it. it wasn't too much of an upset because i had my morals intact over my job. >> to sit there and watch someone drown, it's someone's life. like, we're lifeguards. >> the lifeguard company says it is reviewing the rule. the man rescued was taken to the hospital and is doing fine. take a look at some home video here of a teenager being rescued from a glacier in alaska. the 16-year-old had to be freed from the bottom of a 50-foot crevice. kurt schinler and his brother were hiking saturday near anchorage when he fell through a snow bridge. that rescue took five hours. kurt's skin was pressed up against that glacier the whole time. this morning doctors are treating him for hypothermia. and investigators in chicago are trying to figure out what caused a freight train to derail. union pacific says 31 cars went off the tracks when a train bridge collapsed yesterday afternoon. the three-engine train was carrying coal to wisconsin. nobody was hurt. union pacific says it will take about two days to clean up that mess. the rail line is not used by chicago commuter services. today in sanford, florida, george zimmerman will learn if he can once again get out of jail. zimmerman faces second-degree murder charges in the death of 17-year-old trayvon martin back in february. a judge revoked zimmerman's bond when prosecutors accused him and his wife of hiding donations raised on a website created for his defense. a bond hearing on the issue last week played out like a mini trial. >> it was done to hide the money so that they could deceive the court, lie to the court. >> it is not the grand conspiracy that the state seems to suggest. >> zimmerman's defense attorney says his client acted out of fear for his family's safety. the lawyer says zimmerman poses no threat and stayed in contact with law enforcement during his initial bail release. 4:49 now. firefighters hope to have a raging wildfire in colorado fully contained by the weekend. calmer winds and higher humidity are helping crews gain control of this fire. so far, the waldo canyon fire has scorched 28 square miles and scorched some 350 homes. light rain has also helped the situation out there. colorado's wildfire is 1 of 45 large fires burning across the country. six days after the storm here, and we are learning about a 38-year-old woman who is paralyzed from a storm-related injury. during friday night's storm, a pine tree came crashing down on carolina alcalde's back as she rode her motorcycle on 15th street in northwest d.c. the impact severed her spinal cord, broke five ribs and one of her shoulders. doctors say that he is paralyzed from the waist down. carolina's father says he's touched that friends have set up a donation campaign to help pay medical expenses. >> every time i see this help that i'm receiving, we are receiving, my wife and i, constantly, from support from everybody, as i find out about the tragedy of my daughter, and i don't know how to react to that. >> carolina's first year of recovery could cost more than $250,000. carolina alcalde is an avid motorcyclist and works as a mentor for children. this morning a fireworks display in california is being called a bust. san diego officials say a "technical difficulty" caused all the fireworks to go off at once at the big bay boom. they're still trying to determine exactly what happened. the explosions lasted about 15 seconds. no one was hurt. and there they all went. >> wow. >> man! >> you know it fits the today, the big heat. just how big is it? take a look at this massive bubble of heat over the nation's eastern two-thirds, from 101 degrees yesterday, minneapolis, minnesota. 102 was the temperature in kansas city, 98 in dallas. look at all those areas east. 102 in chicago, 101 in raleigh. we hit 99 and now we're talking about temperatures not gearing down but ramping up for today. there's your shower on radar, storm4 radar. charlottesville, around fredricksburg, just that, shower. there were high winds, too, around quantico and trees down with the high winds. 81 degrees at reagan national airport, dew point of 63. it cooperates a little in the morning but then sky high by late morning and early afternoon. the humidity really rolling back quickly. for today, we could see an isolated shower or storm and a better chance coming our way around 6:00 or 7:00 p.m., but isolated, i think, and really fast moving, kind of in and out of here. then for tomorrow, it's the heat. 96 to 100 degrees. it's going to be oppressive today. so again, do what you can to stay hydrated and stay cool. there are times i know we say stay in shade, stay inside. a few folks without the ac. 88 to 93, isolated thunderstorm possible. look at your morning forecast and seven-day forecast, because 102 is what the temperature could be on saturday. 97 on sunday. next week cooling back to the 80s. let's go to mike now for traffic. a lot of people still on vacation, so pretty light out there right now. let's look at the problem we had earlier in faulkier county. that's been removed. all travel lanes are open and no serious problems on 270. let's look live at falls road. no serious backup there. and you're also looking good right now on the beltway near 270. about a ten-minute ride on 270 to 95.
